Aquabyss by Jirugameshi
Explore an underwater world filled with wonderous sights and dangerous predators.

I've finally managed to make an acceptable level. I've used the gas material glitch to give a nice underwater feel and made some sea creatures you can win as prizes.

There is also some mild platforming and a simple boss fight at the end. Enjoy.

I love it! it's quirky, it's awesome, It's a simple level in design terms but it's functional, that boss is giving me a problem! but it's addictive! I think I found a way to break the level, check out the boss, I pulled his arm off the edge and now the bubble wont spawn...2009-11-28 11:00:00

This is a really excellent level. I loved the "water" effects, and the platforming is simple but fun. The design of the end boss is fantastic - really simple design, but a great idea.

On the first playthrough I ran into an issue at the very end - when I hopped on the platform and it was rising, I thought I was supposed to jump on the fish like I did in the other areas - I didn't know it was just scenery. I jumped on the fish and waited for another platform to come and it never came. I jumped back down to where the boss was and another platform never showed up again.

On the 2nd playthrough I just stayed on the platform and got to the finish line. Very cool!

yea, I noticed that too, where's the sensor on it? quite an upsetting thing indeed.. maybe have a sensor switch that shuts the "bubble" off when someone gets off it onto one of those fish, either that or make them background..2009-11-28 16:33:00

Thanks for the comments guys.

I've just fixed up the final bubble issue. It will now be "called back" 300 times faster while you're standing on the ledge next to the boss. Unfortunately it now makes an annoying winch sound, but it's better for the added security. I've also fixed a minor issue which could arise with the right tentacle interfering with the bubble after the boss was defeated.

I couldn't find a nice way to make the fish not seem like interesting jump platforms other than placing gas everywhere, so instead you're now encouraged to do it. With the fixed final bubble you can now jump back down to the ledge and wait a second for the bubble to come back anyway.

I'm glad you guys liked it, I was afraid the bubble platforming part might be a bit obscure, or that the way to defeat the giant enemy crabs and the final boss might not be apparent enough.

Just took a break from creating to play this. I enjoyed it, it's cute and fun That last bubble confused me a bit at first as when it didnt come back down when I jumped on the first fish for the points I didn't know what to do. Fortuanatly you designed it so when you jump back down it comes down so thats all good Just was confused at all.
Really liked the boss too, as simple as it was Though I died first time instantly when I went down as I didn't expect it lol!
Also, I know it's on PSP but I think you could still of added maybe a few more decorative stuff, but it still looked good. The background was very cool Such a useful glitch.
Overall 4/5 stars, I hope to see you continue to create!

[...]Really liked the boss too, as simple as it was Though I died first time instantly when I went down as I didn't expect it lol!Yes... it seems there's a bug with the sensor switch. I had set it up to only activate once a player is down there, but it is initially ignoring the switch for some reason. So the boss is always going through its attack pattern regardless of what I do.

As for the boss being simple... I actually had planned for it to be more complex, but had to scale down because of some unknown issues with emitters, and some known issues with pistons and bolts.

Also, I know it's on PSP but I think you could still of added maybe a few more decorative stuff, but it still looked good. The background was very cool Such a useful glitch.
Overall 4/5 stars, I hope to see you continue to create! Thanks. I'm actually really not good at environmental decoration, and since I was starting to suffer from slowdowns when going into create mode I didn't want to push my luck. My next level won't use the gas material glitch though, so I'll hopefully be more free to put some actual shrubs and the like strewn around. My annoying analog stick also makes it rather difficult to do precision editing.

Ah I forgot you have a broken anologue nub. What a pain that must be. I quite liked the simplicity of the boss. Being on PSP I don't actually expect to see some ridiculous high logic stuff. I know I won't be creating that sort of stuff in my levels, though there is a bit of simple logic here and there.2009-11-29 00:16:00

Finally, good community stuff! This is one of the first of a new wave of excellent stuff to get published. Very creative, and it has a cool cartoony underwater vibe to it. It's fun to play without being frustrating, but there's enough challenge to keep it interesting. You've tried a lot of new concepts here and I think they all work pretty well together. The final boss fight is fabulous!

I had a minor gripe with the final bubble, but that's already been addressed anyway so I'll skip that one. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to kill the crabs. I got the first one by pure luck, and it took me a while to pop the second one. Once I realized it was a shimmy-grab thing, I think I said "Oh, duh!" out loud. The main problem I had was that hanging onto the inside of the claws killed me when the arm moved up because of the quick motion. If you're going to be republishing the level at some point, you might consider slowing down the arms a tiny bit and perhaps adding a half second of delay to the wobble bolt motion.

Fun stuff here - I'll be hanging onto this on my PSP for a while. 5 stars, hearted, and a creator heart.

Wow, thanks!

I actually am planning on republishing this level because I found out I missed one of the gaps, so it's possible to jump out of the playing zone and mess around on the "sea floor". I also want to fix the boss so it doesn't start up until the player gets there.

I think I've managed to fix my analog stick to a certain extent, so I'm going to be putting some better decorations all around. Maybe a few silvery fish swimming around in the background, anemones, seaweeds, etc.

I'll be sure to try to do something about the crab's pincers, though you can avoid dying by jumping up and grabbing higher up the pincer.

you can avoid dying by jumping up and grabbing higher up the pincer.I did eventually figure that out, but even then it was only a 50/50 deal for me. I just think I was timing my jumps wrong.

Regardless, thanks again for making a killer level!

I fell through the level near the beginning. Besides that it was a great level.

Drats. You found the *one* pit I had forgotten to put gas in.

UPDATE: Alright, I've republished the level with some major changes.

Overall more vibrant look
Crab death scream and slower pincer movement
10% additional boss health
New hidden prize bubble
Crab and fish prizes no longer suffer material shift

I think it looks much better now, it definitely feels more alive and less barren.

There are unfortunately a couple of parts where there is a slight slowdown, but it shouldn't last more than a second or two. I've done all I could to avoid it.

Give it a spin and let me know what you guys think of the changes.

Really wonderful environment! I love the scrolling bubble background and the boss design! There are a few parts where it is unclear how to procede but beyond that very fun. :-)2009-12-04 23:17:00

Give it a spin and let me know what you guys think of the changes. I played this through again, and the changes look great. The overall spiced up look is immediately apparent and fantastic. Very much alive and much more enjoyable to look at (not that the original version wasn't). I still have a little trouble with the crab bosses, but it's a good kind of trouble. It's challenging but not frustrating, so I'd say you have them tuned about right. The slowdown isn't bad, and although I find it slightly annoying it does actually add to the underwater vibe of the level.
