Archive: 186 posts

It’s nearly here, the cheese we’ve all been waiting for! On Monday 30th, Leerdammer will update LittleBigPlanet to 1.21, and deliver Online Create, Save and Networking improvements, increased profile space, and and loads of awesome enhancements and new features! All for free I might add.
<a href="http://littlebigplanet.com/en-gb/news/article/online_create_and_more_leerdammer_is_upon_us">Head over to LittleBigPlanet.com for the full details</a>, and a handy walkthrough video explaining all the new features and how to use them.
<a href="http://littlebigplanet.com/en-gb/news/article/online_create_and_more_leerdammer_is_upon_us"><img src="http://www.mediamolecule.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/image001.jpg" alt="image001" title="image001" width="568" height="744" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2223" /></a>
Tonight we are celebrating with a cheese feast, we’ve ordered big chunks of all the cheese patches to date, and will be scoffing them down with some nice biscuits and wine, we strongly suggest you do the same thing. Happy Leerdammer!

Technically, yes, I just haven't touched it in months, only played once to play a level. So yep, I know absolutely nothing about anything here XD <_>

Sam said there are no plans to, but they said the same last year.

At any rate, first thing I'm trying when the update comes out is importing a level with WAAAATTEEEEEEERRR into the normal game

I'd say if that is allowed it won't be until water is released as then we could import our water levels also right? I don't know? We will see

EDIT: Although thinking about it wouldn't it be great to release all the beta water levels before the water is released to show all the things that can be done with it instead of getting a load of spam levels like we did when the mgs stuff was released.

Because there's no spam water levels in the beta

Although, I like the sound of that idea. Unlikely as it is, would make for a great water demo

Says the man who met with media molecule a little while back. Are you withholding information, Mr. wexfordian?

Seriously, though, I'm going to hold on to hope. Maybe it's foolish to do so, but ... well, I'll just back up the levels and see what happens. ^_^ If not, I've written down the specs for the Flamingo so I can rebuild him to be bigger and stronger and more powerful. MWAH HAH HAH HAH!

I am most excited to be able to block join requests whilst creating. The whole thing with activating checkpoints is a welcome feature, and the increased profile space is the best thing since sliced... er... cheese. ^_^ Hurray for online create! I cannot wait!

My profile has been so on the edge for so long and why I love this update so much. In the beta, I never had an issue and had many many levels on my moon, including the ones on my current profile as well as a ton of objects and stickers in my popit menu. I don't think anyone in the beta ever reported they got a warning that their profile was too full.

...don't get my wrong, I loved OC as well as the switchable checkpoints and the other goodies. It's just that to me the profile and level backup management pieces are a much needed fix to this beloved game.

Thanks Mm!!

i am drooling, i love it. BUT to activate cheackpoints with a switch is kindof cheating. i will use that as a last resort. i just love everything i will wake up at 12:00 to get it! i cant wait
i almost forgot, letting people you dont know, WILL mess up your level.
EDIT: with the new save methed, will the throm take more to fill up. i would love the extra space!

Wow... that could be a cool contest. Not sure I would be any good at it though as I tend to start on one thing and end up with another at times!

Sorta like... starting on a robot and end up with a turbo charged cheese slicer.

In terms of transferring levels from the beta over, can't you guys simply back up the level onto the harddrive and then import it into the normal version?

That is what we are hoping! ..we may have to play a bit of a game to get the level into a correct directory though. The folder naming conventions will be a bit different than they were in the Beta. ..maybe not and they will also be selectable, but it will be interesting to see all that once we get the update.

Yyyeessssssssss!!! Finally! This is truly awesome. Finally, online create. I can't wait to try it out. And switch checkpoints! That's really great. And now it would be easy to implement the save idea I mentioned in a blog post a while back. I'll have to post that in the ideas thread soon...

And of course a bigger save space! Finally I can collect community objects and stickers without worry about overloading.

Wow - this is incredible. I can't wait! All the new features look fantastic, but I am most excited about the profile space increase, the backup improvements, the switchable checkpoints, and the blocking of invites.

Am I the only one who's not gung-ho about online create? I was not part of the beta, and so I've never experienced it, but I can't imagine really enjoying the experience. I am a painfully slow creator who uses the rewind constantly. Plus, I'm very territorial... as a software developer, I can tell you that I hate to co-develop code. Then throw in that I really prefer to play levels alone vs online, and I think I may be the odd man out on this. Anyone else share my anti-scoial POV?

The only thing I was a little saddened by was the fact that only one player has control over rewind in Online Create.

I could see great pieces of a level being ruined because the main creator decided it was time to rewind.

Well.. it is different for sure. You really have to cooperate and I went about creating with a different mindset. For example if the host hits rewind every four seconds it can be mind numbing and not much fun. I tended to capture an object as soon as I created it or simply build things on my moon and bring it back to the level in progress. I also worked while in OC in a way that I rarely requested a rewind.

I can understand you being territorial. ..just because there is OC doesn't mean we all have to buddy up. I will still do most levels on my own, but I also would like to do a few co-op levels with some folks. It is just a different mindset you have to engage as you are entering into the adventure.

One cool thing you might enjoy about it is you can easily have someone visit your work in progress as well as visit someone that needs a hand with some logic or a simple critique.

To be honest, I learned so much while in OC that I think it is really worth the experience even if you just want to screw around in an empty level with a few close friends.

What I didn't like though was folks joining me in OC and deciding to start building something somewhere without asking. Just struck me as a bit rude..

Maybe I should remake my checkpoint maze level...

For those who weren't in the beta, it was basically a level with lots for ooms full of checkpoints and switches. Pulling a switch would kill you and transport you to a checkpoint. So you had to find the right way to the finish by teleporting. It was pretty crazy.

For those who want to import beta levels into the main game... I still say don't get your hopes up too much. Remember that you couldn't send beta made objects to someone to use in the main game, and I imagine backing up levels works in the same way.

I think they do listen to us, but in this case I think that thread came out well after it was actually implemented in the Beta. In this case, it was probably a no brainer to implement this feature as their level designers probably hated moving and smashing checkpoints as well.

Awesome! I can't wait for the increased profile space! Also, should be fun to create online with everyone on my friends list.

To the person above me, they can still spam you with join requests.

EDIT: Actually, I think I have it backwards, the new feature stops them from giving you join requests but they can still give you invite requests.

I haven't played the beta in a while so let me know if that has changed.

But seriously, this update is tremendous. I'm actually considering buying some Leerdammer to celebrate.

Awwwwriiiiiiigh'! I usually hate Mondays, but this...this is going to be the BEST MONDAY EVAR! I hope the "auto reject" function has a nice message to the person being rejected.

"GreyMRP refused to let you join >:|" sounds so mean!

One cool thing you might enjoy about it is you can easily have someone visit your work in progress as well as visit someone that needs a hand with some logic or a simple critique.
OK - I can definitely see this as a huge plus. Very good point... thanks.

What I didn't like though was folks joining me in OC and deciding to start building something somewhere without asking. Just struck me as a bit rude..
Yeah - that would tick me off.

I think it tells them you have auo-reject on.

it says "your name - is auto rejecting at this time" or something very close to that. It doesn't single out one person so it's a little nicer than having to refuse them individually and much less distracting and annoying.... it's a good thing. 2009-11-27 18:08:00

Yet I still bet you'll get loads of PSN messages saying "Why have u got auto reject on!!!!!!!! turn it off!!!!!! I want 2 join!!!"

INCREDIBLY NICE UPDATE.

I can't wait. But a couple of things:

-They did exactly what I thought they would to workaround the TRC rule I explained thousand of times that a save file cannot increase after being initially created: They now save as "game content", just like DLC, therefore they can expand.

The only thing I don't like though is that I need to rely more on their software now to back-up my stuff. You have to "export" your data. This means if there's bugs (let's not forget this game is particularly prone to them it seems) people might lose more back ups. The PS3 firmware is FAR MORE trustable and I would have like to continue to back up by it. But oh well, most people won't care so I guess it's fine.

---------

I love that we have activateable checkpoints and auto-reject feature. (while I would need a "notifications on/off" option more.

I'll second that motion, though. I'd rather have all of the notifications turned off - that way we can just ignore them instead of refusing them.

Well, it's really like the same thing that happened with Infinite Lives Checkpoints. At first people made it using a trick, and now Mm have made it so it's a common sight.

I think the same thing will happen with "teleports". It'll certainly be more easy than moving checkpoints on pistons now.

Meh, if I ever do a teleporter, I will try to do it without checkpoints. If Mm really wanted everyone to be able to build teleports, they should've added a teleport tool.

Of course you can. The PS3 just copy the file to another device and that's fine. You still depend on the special export from the GAME. If that export is buggy or not good, you will back-up a bad file with the PS3.

Thanks Mm!!

agreed entirely im so excited for dis
best part is auto reject ^^ and OC of course

Yeah the profile bit has been tiresome for a long time now. Every time I create I find I have to make tough decisions involving deletions... and this occasionally has led to mass exoduses @ 4am just in order to save the latest and the greatest...

so sad to leave that torture behind.

Cool. Check points will be able to be activated by switches. Now all they need to add is the ability to make an objects lethal by switch.

Also, the are finally removin the play-create-share counter. I wonder what will replace that.

They also said that the sticker switches have been changed a bit. I wonder what they look like now.

I think the thing I'm most looking forward to with online create is just messing about again. A lot of people seem to be saying "I won't bother with online create because it's better to make stuff alone", which is very true, but I found in the beta that online create was best when you don't make anything that you intend to publish, or even save for that matter. Just making random stuff, having paintball races, and blowing up what other people have created can keep you entertained for hours. 2009-11-28 14:50:00

With the new ability to backup your game data save as a save data save, how would that work? What's the purpose of moving saves to game data? Flexibility/robustness? And the expanded profile size won't restrict large game data saves from being exported as a save data save?2009-11-29 00:51:00

Much more space for one thing in the Game Data folder. The level backups and profile backups go to another place actually.. At least in the Beta it was going to a separate Save Data folder with all iterations of each backup as a separate file in that folder. A freaky long list as I backed up often while working on levels. I think they are limited to how large of a file can be stored in the Save Data folder where the Game Data folder is much much more.

Flat out.. there just is a ton more room. I don't recall anyone ever filling their profile and our current LBP profile was rolled in there so it wasn't like a blank slate. I had tons of objects in my popup as well as levels on my moon. You literally can go nuts.

Okay, so I go away for two days, and we get this bomb dropped on us!?

I had quite some catch-up to play before posting. I'm glad everyone is excited about OC Create and the Checkpoints/Racegates, but I'm loving the profile backup. I don't have to delete all the level from my moon anymore! Yippee!!

About OC create, it doesn't seem like it'd be fun, but once you get seriously into a level with someone else, it almost seems more rewarding to get something finished. You do have to play with copyable levels and sending keys to make sure that people can work on it when the host is unavailable, but it seems to work out fine.

One big problem I can forsee with online create is the number of PSN messages we'll get saying "Add me as a friend and lets make a level together!!!", or "I need help with my level, come and build it for me and I'll mention in the description that you helped!!". I get enough of those from random people just asking to play levels together.

Can guests capture objects ya think?

Yep. And you can freely edit those objects as much as you want.

This does however mean you have to be careful. You could make an awesome object and someone could pop in the level, copy it and steal it. There's nothing you can do to stop them either. So just make sure you pay attention to who you're inviting to see your stuff, and don't let in anyone you might not trust.

Nuclearfish's words of warning should be heeded by everyone. I imagine we are going to see a LOT of people getting burned by this in the coming weeks. Online create will make it easier to rip other people off than ever before. Do be careful who you are creating with.

I'm just hoping the little things from the beta make it over. Mag Switches not screwwing up every single time you move them and things like that were my favourite features...

Looks like i'll have to be quick with my question, then. I'd really like to join an editing session with an experienced LBP creator such as MrsSpookyBuz or rtm223, and take a look at how they do things. And if they wanted, I would help them with their level. Maybe even make a few levels together. I promise I wouldn't steal their objects unless they allowed me to capture them.
The reason being, i'm not good enough with the level editor to make levels that lots of people play. (Check out my Showcase Levels for an example). And the fun part to me about LBP, is creating levels. That's a lot more fun than playing the levels to me. So i'd like to become quite good at it.

Hopefully i'm quick enough to reach them before many people on LBP start flooding them with messages like "OMG PLZ HELP ME WITH DIS LVL N SUCH KTHXBAI!! H4H?".

Ontopic again:
I'm looking forward to trying Leerdammer out . I'm curious how the activatable checkpoints work.

I have few trustable friends lol. I mean litterally, three people have "betrayed" me and started swearing or flaming me because I wouldn't let them join, or something like that, when they'd otherwise seem like fun, calm people. If they got into my moon, it would've been pain city.

BTW, anyone scared about the extra layer glitch getting patched?!

Who knows? Maybe, since we have the objects saved, it'll still work, but I'm still scared. I actually have a major question... How can I cut the internet from my PS3 to forestall the patch? Please comment asap.

Definitely excited for this one, can't begin to say how helpful it would be to do collaborative efforts with people on my friends list. It would definitely mean a lot more detailed levels, that's for sure. Maybe like a collaborative R&C level or something.2009-11-30 00:42:00

We should still be careful, leerdammer is more than just OC.

We should still be careful, leerdammer is more than just OC.

I don't think anything in leerdammer wasn't in the beta though. Maybe a couple of minor things, but all the listed features were in the beta.

Plus they aren't going to knowingly patch a glitch in such a way that it breaks levels. Having the collected objects will be enough to still use them. same as the cow glitch etc etc. MM are not stupid, they will patch up the original method of creating the glitch (which barely anyone knows, anyway) and leave it at that.

no need to get your knickers in a twist.

Also, I can confirm that levels still work - the logic pack is still sound. Don't know if you can create using it, because I really, honestly don't care beyond the logic pack working...

Well, If it means anything. After the first major OC beta update, I was unable to import levels with layer glitch materials from reg LBP to beta LBP. I had assumed that they patched the glitch, someone should test it.2009-11-30 01:30:00

But were you able to glitch objects into the background in the beta?

If yes it might be still possible then.

I hope we can finally let twin towers loose on the LBP community.Me, NinjaMcWiz, jackOfcourse, Killian, xkappax and many many more people worked on that level. It was the highest ratest Beta level until the new people joined.

I hope we can import it.

The fact you and I were awake for like 2 or 3 days, chain smoking and drinking, trading shifts to bang that out should be more than enough reason for 'em to christen it with some well wishes... have your wife tell them lol

...and the original contest template too, where you and jack had to deal with kappa and I when the dust settled we all poured our heart into that.

The update is nice.. You can now create levels together over Internet too, I remember when I wanted to create levels with a friend over internet but it kicked him when I went to create mode, and when I once tried to save a custom costume (decorations and stickers) and saved it, it was without decorations and stickers but now it really saved it.. These could've been in the other update a while ago tho..2009-11-30 18:24:00

I just found out they also changed the sound effect when you change material for something that sounds... kinda weird. And unpleasant.2009-12-03 23:55:00

Tonight we are celebrating with a cheese feast, we?ve ordered big chunks of all the cheese patches to date, and will be scoffing them down with some nice biscuits and wine, we strongly suggest you do the same thing. Happy Leerdammer!

I can imagine a 12 year old kid sitting alone all drunk when mommie comes home and sees her son all drunk, underwear over his head, celebrating leerdammer while playing the latest levels online.

For some reason I think she would blame the dutch
(since leerdammer is from origin dutch)
