Is it normal that I go with an idea and eventually scrap it?

Is it normal that I will go with an idea and start creating a level for a while, get bored of it and feel I could do better and eventually scrap it? I have done this several times and have not completed one level to post on the internet. I would like to eventually create and finish a level. Any suggestions?2009-11-25 20:42:00

that's pretty usual especially when you first get the game although you may feel you got nothing from those levels since you scraped them you have probably become a slightly better creator. My advice is too make many levels and don't publish them until you feel it's your best work possible. (you might find you end up going back to an idea you had before making it a lot better that's what im doing)2009-11-25 20:46:00

lol trust me, I know several people who are like that, myself included. You go through it, off to a really good start, but then it drags on and you get the cursed creators block. But really, if you've got off to a great start, keep with it, eventually you will have another creative burst and finish off the level, and if you will feel that you could have done some things better or added something which really shows-off a skill you've developed, then save it for the next level and top yourself then. Of course, if you're a perfectionist like me, you're going to find it tough, but it's how things go 2009-11-25 20:56:00

Yeah, that is totally normal! I'm just like that. I'll usually go through 2-3 different level designs a month. I just can not seem to get anything right! So, yeah, that is so normal and I know it has happened to every creator at least once! But DON'T delete every scrapped level right away! I know from experience! You will almost inevitibly think of something for a different, nearly forgotten level and you will want to put it in and maybe even continue the level. It has happened to me probably ten times or so. I'll remember something I wanted to put into a level only to find I deleted it the week before! So I suggest you keep a scrapped level for a month or until you know you aren't going to work on it anymore.

Hope this helps!

Yup, its normal. Sometimes an idea sounds good, but later on it just doesn't feel right, or translate well, or whatnot. But everything you do is a learning experience in some way or another, and a lot of the time your "failed" projects and experiments will make making others easier.2009-11-25 21:32:00

I'm in the same camp, I've started on new level concepts many times. But I don't throw anything away (except one level which was just to experiment with create mode), I just work on one thing until I'm bored or something, then skip to another concept.

Which explains why I still haven't published anything after almost a year.

i do that
i made a car that can drive itself, but i am struggling with the track that wont get boring. i tryd over 10 times, and all of them- an epic fail.
and you can ask other people for ideas that would make it better *cough* *cough*
and if i did every idea, my moon would be filled up

YES. This, my good sir, is completely normal. We all go through it, all the time.

But instead of just completely scrapping a level, I'd suggest saving it for a later time. Just leave it on your moon, and come back to it eventually.
By doing this, you can see where you improved, and all the progress you've made as a creator, as well as see where you need to improve.

Heck, maybe when you come back, you'll have a spark of creativity, and finally finish the level.
Or maybe you can even totally turn around your old idea and make it a new one. Looking at old ideas is a good way to come up with new ones.

I'm just like that. Haven't finished a level since I joined LBPC. I guess I lost my muse to see a good idea through to the end. But now with LBP PSP and Leerdammer, I feel that I've got my inspiration back. So you may see something from me at last in the coming weeks. 2009-11-28 13:30:00

Totally normal. I do it all the time and can never concentrate long enough on anything but my logic machinery (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=18003). I think I'll stick with that then.2009-11-28 13:57:00

I had the same problem with lbp AND making games in general for years.

I've started doing a 'spiral' method of development though where you start with a really basic prototype and slowly build to it and improve it, up until you get what looks like a finished level

So far it's turning out tons better than before, i've gone with one idea and i've managed to stick with it without losing motivation for about 2 weeks now

I'd imagine that's harder to do in lbp but you could adapt the method to how things are created.
First do a quick plan, write down some themes and random ideas and draw a really basic outline of the level (don't bother putting many features in).
Time yourself and try to do that in less than 2 minutes, just so the ideas are more spontaneaus and you don't get bored of it before the planning is over.

Then start making the level that you drew, keep everything as simple as possible. Just make a load of cardboard with the grid on or something.

Right, that can be V1 of your level. Then work your way up
Do some simple decorations, maybe reshape the gridded floor, add a few obstacles.

The idea is that no matter how much you do the level is always finished. Even if you give up early on you can still publish it as a really bad level if you wanted to xD
And you could always reuse stuff for a new idea if you wanted to

It is a-typical if you are not seeing anything through to publication. My moon fills up pretty quick... currently there are the lvls; Complete and Udder F*olle, Iron Giant, The Last Faery, and bits of Aqueducts and The Bee Volunteer.

I would say all of them started off better then what I have actually published but it is normally the tech side of things which slows me to a crawl... till I eventually move on/ I often recycle these 'used' ideas into current projects but I'm still not so sure they wouldn't have been better if I just continued on as I originally intended them to be...

With all that said and understood, YOU must bite the bullet! Make the commitment, pick a favorite, or roll them out in a mish-mash-master level.

The key here is publishing. You will never improve as a Creator if you don't publish. You can always delete them if the results are truly disastrous. Fight through it, and Good Luck!
