Object balancer?

Archive: 5 posts

How would you feel about a switch-type thing that automatically attempted to keep the object it is attached to upright (or at whatever angle you wish)? My idea is that you attach it to an object like you would a sensor switch, and then set the strength and angle, along with the obligatory visible and inverted options. Angle sets the angle that the switch will try to keep itself at, and therefore the object, in the same way that one-legged creatures balance themselves. Strength obviously sets how much force it can apply to keep itself upright, so a low strength balancer can still be knocked over with some effort.

If there is already some way of doing this, please enlighten me so I can shut up and attention is paid to more important issues.

Do you have an idea of how you would implement such a device? I would be able to assist you.

My idea would be to attach some elastic to the top of the object and attach some dark matter above the object. That way, the object will be pulled upward and attempt to self-right itself.

Let me get it right: basically, you want an object that can move but CAN'T rotate, right?

Yes, there is a way of accomplishing it. It can be done with both pistons or springs. I'd reccomend you springs.

-Make a square of dark matter.
-Make a big square of stone/metal, horizontally aligned with the dark matter.
-Connect them with an HORIZONTAL spring with the strength set to 0,0. The lenght doesn't matter. Make sure that the spring is completely horizontal; use the grid for all this process.
-Now place your object under the square of stone/metal.
-Attach a VERTICAL strenghtless spring that goes from the metal/stone square to your object.

Now your object CAN move, but CAN'T rotate, so it should keep it's balance perfectly. Ah, by the way, if your springs bend, just make the stone/metal square bigger; connectors, like springs, are more resistant depending on what object they're attached to.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys, but what I mean is not so much something that can't fall over, but will resist it, and can still move. For example, a unicycle (I don't know why someone might want a unicycle, but it's the first thing off the top of my head). Nevertheless, an adaption of Keldur's idea with some mid-strength elastic where the vertical spring was solves the problem. I'm afraid I was having a bit of an off-day when I posted this, it seems. I'd normally think of that straight away. Hmmm...2009-12-01 19:09:00
