Retro Robots Competition - Mucho XP!!!

Hello LBPC,
Im currently going robot crazy at the moment and I wanted for you guys to join in the fun.

This competition is open to everyone, and the brief is simple.... BUILD A ROBOT.

Now, a few ground rules...

1 - The robot must only use one thick layer and the thin layer immediately in front of it. It doesn't neccessarily have to use both layers, but it definitely can't use any more than that.

2 - the final design must be made entirely from dissolve or have a brain incorporated into the design so that it can be destroyed. Lights and decorations are fine.

3 - The robot must be roughly 3 sackboys in height. This is just a general guideline though, I am flexible.

4 - The robot must be able to shoot plasma balls outta somewhere (I will be setting this up so you don't need to have the MGS pack but just bear in mind that the arm or whatever will have to move to fire.)

5 - It doesn't have to walk or anything. The only thing that needs to move is what will be emitting the plasma balls.

Robots will be judged on the following...

1 - Robotiness
2 - Retroiness
3 - Funiness
(Think eighties toy robots)

Post a picture of your entry (with your sackboy beside it so I can gauge the scale) and the name of the showcase level so I can see it in LBP here before the closing date.

The winning entry will appear among the other robots in my upcoming level. (Only if you want it to of course). 1000 xp for the winner, 500 xp for 2nd place and 250 xp for 3rd place. Everyone who enters will get 100xp from me so get your thinking caps on!

Heres a few early stage prototypes I knocked up the other night just to get you in the mood

Is it ok to remake an actual 80's robot? I may have an idea for this contest.

What about any logic for the robot (such as Sackboy tracking and charging up before attacking)? Or is it better if it simply acts "dumb" and constantly moves/fires randomly?

I sketched out my robot, this contest is fun!!
It might collide a bit too much with your visual style so I don't think I will win but its definitely worth a shot!!

All designs are welcome. Although Im not sure how it will look to have a load of generic robots with something as instantly recogniseable as Optimus Prime stuck in there somewhere, it may confuse things a little.

It can be as simple or as complex as you like. Without giving too much away "Sackboy" will be firing plasma with keys on them and the robots will be doing the same. I have the logic to put on the robot so if your not really good at logic don't worry please still enter (Im not talking about you here gilgamesh I know you rock at logic) In relation to trackers, "sackboy" could posibly be in any direction to the robot so it would need to track him anywhere on the screen not just on the ground. I can give the robot a reasonable amount of space to manouvere also.

If you do make a really complex robot I could make him a boss if he has varying attack modes etc. If a boss is what your going for I'd say make him bigger than 3 sackboys to indicate that he would be the "big daddy" of the robots. Remember though no bombs or anything it absolutely has to be plasma (its the smallest you can make a plasma ball if that helps).

This sounds very fun! Sadly I'm creating my entry for the Winter Contest, but maybe I can find some time to create a robot and enter the contest

I'm also glad to hear you have a new level! I thought you were done creating, but I'm gladly mistaken!

Done creating! NEVER!!!

I built 2 levels in the beta so thats why I was gone from the main game for a while...

I promise I'll be back with a bang with my next offering

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with if you have the time

Wow, nothing that iconic. I was just thinking of remaking the military robots from Short Circuit.

Just enough logic to have him aim the gun and move back and forth depending on the position of Sackboy. I might add some jumping too.

I might have to give this a shot! I have a ton of robot designs left over from Manufactured Madness (including a few based on the robot in your sig). I was saving a few of the ideas for future levels, but it's hard to pass up an opportunity like this!2009-11-24 14:31:00

Sounds fantastic, I really like that film. Looking forward to seeing it.

How many entries for person? Only 1?

As many as you like the more the merrier. (The 100 xp is for each participant though, I'd be broke if was for each entry and someone spammed loads just for the xp )

...It is a long way off...

It was too be my next, but a funny thing happened on the way to the Forum... I got sidetracked by a Hoverboard, and a real need to see one really work!

(Incidentally, I have since dropped the Hoverboard from being integral to the level so it will be another anything but generic miscue from a Gravelly source)

Topic @ Hand: I do love robots! Shiny New - outmoded rusted. So I may just have to give this a shot... somewhere on my moon I had a 'robot' idea I didn't have the 'chops' to pull-off... perhaps now.

Sure, but it will probably be in the level description though as the level is going to be very hectic and I don't want speech bubbles interrupting the gameplay. I was thinking of having a training level before this. If I get around to making that I can put it into that level also with the name coming up. Not making any promises on the training level though. This level is taking an incredible amount of time to make as is

I know its brilliant! We should have some really interesting entries

Saying that though, I really don't want to discourage all the people on this site that might not feel confident enough to make a fully fledged level but might be interested in having a bash at making a robot.

Again, for anyone whos worried about logic, don't worry about it, I have all that side of it taken care of. I just want to see people getting involved in the creative process and having the craic (the fun Irish kind not other kind).

I have...

history

valentine
christmas
buzz
killzone
ICO
Monsters
Egyptian
music pack

If it contains anything outside that I wont be able to put it in the level. I can still judge it though?

Yes... that doesn't surprise me at all.

Fact is.. he is too thick. I used two layers for the arms and body as well as a thin back layer and a front thin layer for the orchestrated teeth.

I heard his skinny cousin might be interested in applying for the job though as he is glitchy enough to want to take shots at sack people.

I didn't understand very well this part:

5 - It doesn't have to walk or anything. The only thing that needs to move is what will be emitting the plasma balls.

It can't move or it's not indispensable that it moves?

I'm going to make a robot from scratch instead of trying to make one based on something else. It'll give me some more freedom of form, so to speak.

In fact, I'm coming up with a pretty good idea for a four-armed death robot right now.

I believe I will name it Scrambles the Death Dealer.
Actually I won't, but e-cookies to anyone who gets the reference.

Thats a tough one. Now the level will have nothing overhead but the player will be able to go a fair distance up anywhere in the level. If you wanted to have pistons coming from above they would want to be quite far up (lets say 30 large grid spaces up). If it wins and Im to put it in I may need to edit it a little to make sure that the dark matter is not visible.

That goes for any "flying robots" anybody may be thinking of making. It can appear to fly but may simply be on a winch or whatever. If it is flying remember that "sackboy" could be below, beside or slightly above the robot.

I'm delighted Gravvel that you found it a breath of fresh air, thats exactly what I was hoping it would be Thanks for the entry! Im only going to look at all the levels together so I can keep track of them all better that way and make sure I visit each one in the same frame of mind. All xp will be given out after the winner is announced, makes it easier to track that way.

Question for you Wex:

Can I include both of my entries into one showcase level?

Here they are:

WLF.09.11
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/v0rtex2002/LBP/APhoto_27.jpg

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/v0rtex2002/LBP/APhoto_28.jpg

and...

EGH.09.11

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/v0rtex2002/LBP/APhoto_30.jpg

I've also thrown in the mech from my 00Sack series:
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/v0rtex2002/LBP%2000Sack%20Betrayed/APhoto_7.jpg
But I don't want him to be judged in your contest. He's just a bonus (are you planning on using more than one of these entries in your new level, or just the winner?). Besides, he breaks the rules... he uses two of the thin planes. If you want/need me to, I can remove him from the showcase level.

The level is (assuming it's ok with you to include them all in one level):

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/v0rtex2002/LBP/ICON0.png

Robots for Wex v3.5
PSN: v0rtex2002 (and, as always... those 0's are zeros)

Thanks for hosting this, it's been a pleasant distraction from my current hell (erm... I mean... level).

Wow lol. I can't compete with these. I entered my bot. The level is called electrobot. It's published in the middle of the ocean, and copyable. To kill it, shoot it 8 times in the head. I made it kinda easy, but you can easily adjust the difficulty by changing the land around the robot and changing the times of its pistons and attacks.

BTW, you're Irish, right? Do you know what a gimp is lol?

wow! Some really great entries so far!

Thanks to everyone who has entered so far. Im amazed with the quality of them all. I think Im going to have to revisit some of mine and spruce them up a little as not to totally embarace myself

I have to admit, I was a little aprehensive about doing a competition that allowed something I didn't create into what I think could possibly be my best level yet (yes I can be a bit of a control freak ) as I really didn't know what kind of entries I was going to get. Im so glad I did this now, as now I will have trouble narrowing it down to just one!

Thanks again everyone. They are some truly awesome robots

@ drakon - you don't need mgs pack. Im going to be setting up all the firing and logic myself as it needs to be set up in a very specific way to work in my level, so it really doesn't matter about it.

Hello, I'm using my PSP right now since my laptop refuses to connect to the interenet. That means I can't post a pic now. But if you want to see the robot I created, I published it. It isn't that good, and it breaks a few rules, but I decided to enter it anyway. I had fun making it. ^_^

Robot name - ED (Electronical Device)

ED isn't a fighting robot. He's just clumsy and goofy. He's a misfit robot. I intended to make him shoot at first, but halfway through creating him, I couldn't do it. He's just too innocent-looking. XD

I know this breaks some rules, and probably won't be used, so I'll make another one soon.

Oh c'mon guys seriously!

How am I meant to judge this competition with this level of quality?

I really had no idea that I'd be getting entries of this calibre. Your going to show up my attempts now!!!!

mnnn..... would people be offended if I had multiple winners??

So it has to be an "enemy," correct?

Well, its definitely going to be an enemy (as so far as its going to be shooting at you to kill you) but it definitely doesn't have to look like an enemy. Infact, Im kinda going for the friendly robot look rather than something that looks terrifying.

Think more:
http://criticalterrain.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/friendly-robot.png?w=280&h=280
Than:
http://thefastertimes.com/nonsensenews/files/2009/07/robocop-431x300.jpg

For example I have one robot which I call the Dame Edna robot.

I'm actually entering with a little robot I just build in a few minutes. Going to upload a picture in a bit. It's more Gundam/Toy looking than retro, but meh. First robot ever and it's working 90% of the time.

Here it is. It's a bit larger when activated, but still just as ugly. ^.^

Please dont pull out. The whole reason for the competition was just for a bit of fun and to get creators of all types to join in. Nobody should be embarassed. Thats why I wanted this competition to be open to everyone of all skill levels. The 100 xp is only for people who have entered a robot. No robot, no xp I'm afraid.

OK - I need to stop.

Wex... I've added a few more designs to my level. I've also renamed the level since there are so many different robots in it now (and changed my first post to reflect this - wouldn't want to confuse anyone)

The new level name is: Robots for Wex v3.5

And here are the new designs:

PJ.09.12

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/v0rtex2002/LBP/APhoto_31.jpg

There are two versions of him because I couldn't shrink him down to three sackboys with the lights in him, so I made a version w/o the lights. But I really prefer the 5 sack tall version.

Then there's this guy, who is less robot and more alien:

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/v0rtex2002/LBP/APhoto_32.jpg
B.L.I.P.

But I was in a creative mood, and I liked him, so I kept him in the level. Judge him or not... I don't care. I'm just having fun!
(besides... he breaks the rules: no moving parts to fire plasma from)

I made a very small update to my level. I made it a tad longer and put a smaller version of ED in it. The smaller one runs away from you when you get too close, and the closer you get, the faster the music plays and the more he panics.

It's not much, but it's pretty funny to me. :-D

PSN: MrsSpookyBuz
Level: Pink Prototypes

Cheers
Nice! I can already hear my robots stammering and stuttering in their presence.

LMAO, jww! Wolf whistles? Nah, bleep in their direction and they'll come running!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: I'm so sorry for these! I built them purely for fun, and they pale into insignificance when compared to all the others! My excuse is that I misread the rules. I thought the rules were...

... to build 'a female, pink robot (and be called Lisa in real life)'!

Surely I win?!!

(LOL - sorry, couldn't type that without laughing )

I would have loved to have entered this and am sorry I didn't have the time to put my ideas into cyber-reality, plus I read that rule about being called Lisa too, and so thought I was ineligible. Good luck to all the entrants, and to you Wex (with your level)!2009-12-08 20:38:00

Can I change the normal plasma rapid-fire to my ultra-awesome charge beam? It's still plasma, it just shoots the plasma with a bombs shockwave. Is that disqualified because of the bomb?2009-12-08 20:46:00

No it wont be disqualified. Although if it wins it just won't be able to have bombs. With the way the level is set up, it can't have any bombs detonated.2009-12-08 21:16:00

So you guys keep raising the ante...

It might be too rich for my blood but I feel real good about my second and last entry 'VINCENT'.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=446&pictureid=9496

VINCENT is based on a very old friend, perhaps you've met. The Level is called, "My Cousin Vinny's robot Vincent".

This time I have complied (i think) with the rules. Also threw in a teaser for my next level...
-AND-

Included my "Sneaky Guy"

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnndddddd......BOOM!...... the contest is officially closed!

Words simply cannot describe how Im feeling about this contest.

This comes close...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcxYwwIL5zQ

There has been so many good entries I'd love to put them all in if Im honest but thermo simply wont allow. I will say that after looking at all the entries here I had to go back to my level and delete out a load of robots as they just simply wern't the quality of you guys were making. So you made me make a better level so I thank you for that.

Also please realise that there are about 20 robots in this competition so there is a LOT of competition for the top 3 spots. If your robot doesn't make it it doesn't mean that I don't love it! I think they are all fantastic but will only be able to award 3 people as winners. Everyone who has entered a robot will get 100xp as promised and a big thank you!

Im going to go through them all again tonight and pick the winners.

Phew, glad there's a female robot in here, I was starting to feel like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wl_uQOABxg).

One of the funniest series ever!

don't forget to check my level one last time Wex

No worries, I'll be seeing it tonight

Now theres not much left to say so I'll leave you with my own little robot creation.

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!
