What is Your Favourite Level Setting Right Now?

Archive: 27 posts

So what setting do you like the most at the moment? A futuristic setting? A medieval setting? Every level with a story has to be set somewhere, possibly every level with or without a story is set somewhere. I love to see new and interesting places where a level is set, it could be in a sewer, a palace, anywhere.

Ever since I have been playing LBP I have always loved temple levels. It's just that strange, abstract, Asian visual style that's in the temple levels of the story mode just really makes me warm inside. I find this temple style slots in so well with the weird and wonderful concept of the LittleBigPlanet makes it one of my favourite settings for a level, if not my favourite setting. Jack McSetback and the Spiky Stone of Doom by Wyth is one of my favourite levels and is a great example of what I am getting at.

I am also very much into this concept of sky levels, I just really love the dreamy style of these levels. I really like all levels that are set in this soothing, cloudy environment. Zephyr Valley, The Sky Town levels by jump_button are a great example of what I mean.

I think one of the reasons why I like levels with a sky theme is that they remind me of when I first started creating in this game. This is because the tutorials that you have to complete have that great background with the moon and the clouds and the hanging stars. For me it's just classic LBP.

Another possible reason why I love these sky levels is that I really like being out in the open. I'm not claustrophobic or anything I just really love having that empty space around me.

Anyway, now it's your turn. What's your favourite setting for a level and why?

For me, it would the garden/forest theme, and mostly when it's used in a lighthearted way!

I know, not very original, but I always loved the levels showing trees, leafs, hills, water falls, etc... It's relaxing

I like levels that don't use the same run-of-the-mill background templates. It's cool to see authors actually "create" their own backgrounds. For example, you can use stickers, plasma, gas, electricity, etc. I'm particularly fond of Migloshin's backdrops because of the originality and artistry that goes into them.2009-11-22 01:54:00

I definitley love winter themed levels the best! Oh and you just have to include the 'Wilderness' music with it! It makes the level seem so happy and nice! I just love it!

I like LittleBigPlanet's concept art style, but I've only seen about 15 levels, that aren't mine, that are like LittleBigPlanet's concept art style. (Not including Mm's levels.)

I think I shall say that I also like the tutorials background, it's just so mysterious and open, it also has a very creepy ambient noise. (If you listen closely in a tutorial that doesn't have music.)

This is a hard one...
I do like a lot of futuristic levels.
Also, realistic apocolyptic looking levels are really cool like Post-Apocolyptic and the Ice Age levels.
I'm also a big fan of pirate themes.

The Canyons! A close second is a run-down lab setting.

I suppose it makes sense that my new level has a run-down lab in a canyons setting!

Oh-ho, my favorite themes, aye? Well...

I've always loved sky themed levels. The way everything defys physics, that (usually) steampunk feel, the whimsical stories behind them- they're just simply amazing. And, in my opinion, make some of the BEST levels. Zephyr Valley and Up in Sky Town, just to name a few, are perhaps my two favorite levels EVUH. They just pack so much mythical wonder and awesome effects/gameplay.

Also, due to my "Outlaw"ish nature- Western themed, of course! "C'mere, you yellerbelly varmit!""Reach for the skies!!""Yeehaw!!!"... myep. Almost every Western level has a train sequence, accompanied by a Cowboy & Indian part, which then is followed by an explosive ending. "Rootin' Tootin' Puzzles!" clearly conveys the vibe (in a very interesting, simplistic manner). I guess its just because I'm an Outlaw.

Finally... medieval themes. My first level I've ever created (which I'm now thinking of re-working) was medieval themed, with the most plays I've ever had (120 ). With so many creatures, storylines and potential of laugh-out-loud moments/jaw-dropping moments, this theme just never ceases to amaze me. Try the "Knight's Templar"(?); it was done by a Japanese creator. All I have to say about that one... EPIC BOSS. A great, classic theme, filled with little tiddly-knobs and doo-daa's. ^-^

Soo... anyone else have a favorite theme?

Great replies so far everyone! It's great to see that most people have a different favourite theme to each other. Thanks for sharing them. 2009-11-22 10:18:00

Mine is probably what you would tag as "Old architecture"

Be it castles (occidental/orinetal themed, it doesn't matter), temples, churches or any kind of construction, I love levels set in the insides.
However, they have to be big spaced. I don't like them to be narrow and claustrophobic, they have to be set in BIG buildings, with enormous rooms. I love levels that make the sackboy feel small.
So that's obviously what I try to recreate when building ^^

I personally love extremely artistic levels. Some examples could be squirlins newest level and Post-apocalyptic by anposteller. Those are very artistic and awesome.

When I finish the 2 projects I have now I guess I will be making a Tim Burton styled level. I love those :hero:

God, what a tough question! anpostellar has surprised me with his settings of his levels, because each of them is almost a whole new class of setting in itself

I like treehouse related levels because of intricate bending shapes and great materials. Sci-fi levels too. Anything that's dark, metal-y, and grimy is a win in my book.

I love anything with ancient structures and architecture, for some reason I hate sci-fi levels though, I guess I just hate the paintinator ;2009-11-22 19:21:00

Funny. I saw this thread's name and thought "anything but temple levels", and here's all these temple lovers. It's not that I hate all temple levels, but it's just so cliche.

I like cyberpunk books and movies, and I'd like to see more of that in LBP. I will see to it myself, if I ever get around to doing it.

I like underwater, mountains, urban, and sci-fi, but I really love any setting that is well done. It could be anything as long as it's well done.2009-11-23 22:42:00

hmm, it's really hard to say. I guess I would have a penchant for the Mm gardens levels, something about them just screams ideal LBP setting. Maybe it's the notion of toys being strewn across the gaden and scakboy himself essentially being a toy of sorts.

On a completely different note, anything that gives you that feeling where you feel really alone, yet content because of the amazing surroundings (that feeling you always get from Shadow of the Colossus - though not necessarily only found in SOTC inspired LBP levels).

Personally, I hate when people make Cave levels and the only material they use is Rough Stone Bricks. It gets sooooo boring. I love wartorn middle east levels, like Modern Warfare by TG, and the MGS levels. It was like a dream come true when they released those.2009-11-27 02:18:00

srgt_poptart, stay well clear of my next level rough stone everywhere!

Add to my list the war torn post apocalytic genre, nice and gritty!

Must be steampunk levels. They have to be very cleverly designed though, not just rusty metal smooshed together in the fashion of a meat-fisted gorilla. With fists of meat.
Airships are awesome, especially if they fly.
I'm going to make a Mortal Engines level, with moving cities, airships, Stalkers, the lot.
I should probably get good at creating first. I mean REALLY good.
