RPG Maker

Before you ask, this is NOT and advertisement. It's just a recommendation.

Beginning Thingy
Have you ever wanted to create your own RPG? What's that? You don't know how to script? Don't have enough time or money? Well then, this is the program for you!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Short Description
The name of the program is called RPG Maker, and it was created by Enterbrain. There are a few different versions. They are RM95, RM2k, RM2k3, RMXP, and RMVX. There is also RMDS, which is for the Nintendo DS. I'd recommend getting RMVX. It is great for beginners and experts alike. The others have a lot more bugs in them, and I haven't come across any in VX yet. However, XP and VX are only a 30-day trial, and cost $60 to buy. The others are free to use. It comes with a very simple database, which can be used to create characters, monsters, skills, states, animations, and a few other things. It also comes with a simple resource manager, which can be used to import/export graphics/music, and a Script Editor, which experienced users can use to completely change almost anything you want.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FAQ(taken from RMVX Official FAQ)
1. I keep getting an ntiles error... HELP!!!
When you first launch VX, you must be connected to the internet. If you are not connected to the internet then you'll get the ntiles error and you won't be able to use the software.

2. Can I use my own graphic in VX?
Yes, you just need to import them via the Material Base(F10).

3. The text is cut during conversation, what's happening???
When you are inputting text through the "Show Text" event, you'll notice 2 arrows(facing down) in the window. The first arrow(from the left) show how much text will be displayed if you include a face and the second one show how much text will be displayed when there is no face set.

4. I erase a character after a conversation but it show up again when i re-enter the area where the character is, what should i do to make him go?
The answer: Self-Switch! Create your character event. On the first page, put anything you need(conversation for example). At the end of the first page just add Control Self Switch A = ON then create an empty 2nd page and set the condition Self Switch A. If you want the character to dissappear then don't use any graphic for the 2nd page, if you want the character to remain on the map then use the same charset on the 1st page.

5. I want to display a variable in a conversation, how to do that?
Use the V[X] command(replace X with the variable number). For example if i want to display the value of variable 54 then the command will be V[54].

6. How to add my own custom title?
Place the graphic in your System folder for your game and name it Title.png.

7. I want to create my own custom graphic, what are the size of the tileset, charset, etc?
Refer to this page: http://www.tkool.jp/products/rpgvx/eng/material.html You'll get all the info needed for the size/specification of materials.

8. (not in the FAQ) I created a character set, with everything I needed to be in it, but when I give it to a character, only part of it is selected! How do I fix this?
Before you import the character, make sure the image name has a dollar sign($) before it. NOTE: Only do this for character graphics.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, that's it. If you have any questions about the program, please don't ask me, as I didn't make the program.

I started making a full blown RPG with a few of my friends years ago based on our animation series, "The Sword That Cuts Things". I looooove RPG maker. If my friends hadn't all dropped out, I probably would have finished it.2009-11-21 19:03:00

RPG maker is awesome, I made some preat cool (yet short) adventures with that.
The only thing I did not like was the way battles were portrayed. The semi 'first person view' (depending on which version) wasn't my cup of tea.

Like I said in the first post, RPG Maker is good. However, Zwollie is right, the battle system sucks. There are scripts that can help, though.2009-11-21 19:14:00

I'm ALWAYS serious about making RPGs whenever I say it. It's just that no one ever takes me seriously, so I always talk weirdly

Anyway... um... I d/led drakon's thing, so... I'll play that!

Wait...maybe not :S

Well it seems as though our neverending quest to make an RPG has been revived :kz:

Well... guess now we'd just need to think of what to make it on that we both like... or maybe recruit >_>.

Hm... What do YOU think, mastah? :kz:

Rock the reason you don't work well in a team is because you flip out whenever someone doesn't jump at the chance to start making your idea.

You need to listen to people's feedback, if someone says your idea's bad ask why and then use what they say to improve it. And you're allowed to say that their ideas just as bad too as long as you have a reason

If you want some help with the rpg you're making i'll throw some ideas forward
I'm making my zombie rpg atm though so i can't do much else xD

Well... yes, me, drakon and Ard are now making an RPG :kz: Or planning to, anywho.

Speaking of which... someone else may wanna join, I unno, I kinda didn't ask them :/

And also some story ideas, might as well just not do mine since m Vharley one is being made in LBP and most of my other ones involve amnesia in some format and thus can't be done at all <_>.

... Soooooooooo...

I could help with the story... I have some cool ideas....

O_O

stealer!!!

my ideas are probably better...for example

---------------

in the future, humans have found the true power of the brain...the ability to craft ones own universe!

but one wishes to take all the universes for himself!he takes control of the creations of the world and turn them against their owners.

you and all the other dreamers of the world(they can only craft their universes asleep...when supposedly their minds wander with imaginative power)band together to fight the evil...anbd stop him from destroying reality

you must journey thru the many areas of your universe along with many others.and stop the evil ones control,to get yours and everyone elses universes back!

---------------

so what do you think?...its a bit wierd i know, but i think its cool!

(also "dreamers" are people in the story whom brains/imaginations are strong enough to craft their universe!)

If all you have to offer is a story, then I'm afraid we cannot accept.

If you want to work hard and think you can, then sure, you could.

But if you just have a story idea, then there's no way we can accept it at all >_<

Everyone has epic ideaz... don't expect someone else to make your dreams into a reality for you :kz:

(this post was longer but my laptop died )

@Rock; any ideas or feedback are helpful, just because someone doesn't contribute much more than a story doesn't mean you're making it for them.

Also if you have no experience making rpgs then start small and simple and then work your way up. And by 'making rpgs' i mean finishing them.

I've wasted time on tons of projects because they were too ambitious and everyone just lost motivation because they didn't know how to handle it.
Instead i've started really simple and working upwards and it's working much better, instead of making a load of unplayable rpgs i have 3 finished prototypes that i can look back on for future projects even if i lose motivation for the first one.
