Stored momentum problem

Archive: 3 posts

I just had a most enlightening encounter.

It seems that sometimes objects will store a certain amount of momentum while editing. I have no idea what causes an object to do so or what affects the strength of it.

The net effect is that once you hit Play, that momentum will be released instantly, causing whatever piece you were working on to go flying somewhere and generally breaking mechanisms in the process.

You can tell when an object has stored momentum because if you go over to it and try to tweak it, it will noticeably move by itself (even in pause). I imagine this is because it releases its momentum when selected.

I have found a solution to this problem. Creating a small, static object and gluing it to the misbehaving object will cause it to become static itself and lose whatever momentum it had stored. You can then unglue and delete the static object safely and reset the other object to dynamic.

It occurs to me that I might have to go through every bug in the book, on top of having a busted analog stick, to get this mech out of the workshop.

Edit: Upon further study, it seems to occur immediately after I try to place the second wobble bolt on the mech's upper leg. A regular bolt does not cause the problem, but I've just tried with a motor bolt and it caused the lower leg to store momentum. Replacing the upper leg's first wobble bolt with a motor bolt also causes the anomaly.

As near as I can tell, the problem seems to occur when you have two motorized articulations of any kind.

Edit 2: Even further study suggests that if a regular bolt's tightness is set to 10.0, the problem also occurs.

But diffrrent problems only happening with that spefic settings, that almost looks like is programed to happen seeing how spefic it needs to be to cause the problems.......
