the Perfect Level for You...

Archive: 28 posts

So I have been reading the forums, and have seen many varied and numerous oppinions on what makes a level "perfect" Some say it's fast pace, some say it's story, some say it's game play etc... But I want to see what you have to say when asked "What makes a perfect level?" Please leave a response, and lets see what you all come up with. 2009-11-21 07:29:00

I might not ever see a perfect level, but one of the best levels in my opinion, would be nearly flawless, fun, epic, unoffensive, and unique.2009-11-21 07:36:00

in my oppinion it is mostly beauty i look for in a level first then its gamepley.

If someone creates a nice looking level that makes me smile i charm to it but then if it had like invisble traps and crap that ruined the level gameplay wise i will hate it.

But i go by the old saying judge a book by the cover.........wait...

30% beauty, 20% platforming, 40% intriguing and 10% charm...

I think...

...but it's hard to quantify perfection

To explain, i'd place mechanics that you don't control but merely see as a spectacle under instriguing and mechanations you do control under platforming.

Charm is the feel and setting of the level and beauty is how well its decorated.

Generally, when I see a level that I consider close to "perfect" it's one that has stunning visuals and engaging gameplay. Basically, it looks good and isn't boring. Case in point: CaptainCowboyHat's OH NO!! THE PRINCESS!! levels are pretty close to perfect, I think. They look great, they're never boring, and (added bonus) they have a story that almost seems like it matters (I say that because these levels would be just as good without the story, though I would miss the King's bad jokes...).2009-11-21 15:14:00

-No bugs
-Balanced difficulty
-Generally polished with special attentions here and there.

i think gameplay should take a seat above visuals. afterall, you can polish a turd, but in the end its still a piece of crap.2009-11-21 20:17:00

First it was gameplay for me, but since thats getting more and more the same in most levels i'll go with visuals.. If a level has awesome visuals I want to play it no matter how easy the platforming is. One thing that a perfect level must have is a theme, random levels are getting random ;o2009-11-21 21:33:00

I know visual shouldn't be a big factor in determining a perfect level, but they are for me.

If you make a level that's ugly as balls, but has great platforming, I'm most likely going to leave the level. On the other hand, you could make a visually-intriguing level that is very linear with no challenges and I would probably play through the entire thing happy. Even a mix of both, decent visuals with some good gameplay, would be good enough for me.

That's just me though.

Games and levels need visuals, story, and game-play.

A level with only game-play is like a text game.
A level with only visuals, and no game-play is like television, you just watch.
A level with only story is like a book. But there is no game-play and nothing to look at.

It's a good idea to get all three in a nice even line, but i would favor towards visuals.

Visuals are definetly the most important thing to me, I don't think I could ever heart a level which looks bad, it tells me the author didn't put much effort.2009-11-22 05:54:00

The perfect level... oh, how the ceaseless search will forever haunt me!

Why, when has a level ever brought me to tears?... out of joyous jubilancy!
Why, when has a level ever made me ponder?... about its gloriousness!
Why, when has a level ever impressed me?... by godly design!
Why, when- oh when!- has any level really make me think these exact words:
"Why... this level is perfect."?

Ah, the perfect level! Oh, how it alludes me everyday!! Why, even those, rather remarkably close to perfection... never impress me fully. Until that mandate comes- the day I find that one, truely "perfect" level- my conquest shall never cease until I do.

i like you jack. your answer has definately been my favorite lol. Its true tho, I havent sen a "perfect" level EVER on lbp... even MM's levels arent "perfect" because even tho they are fun, slick, and clean... they lack that... cutting edge. the sharp punch to the face that tells you its perfect. Im looking for a level that hurts. and even thogh that may not make sense to anyone, the feeling may be different to everyone, but we all KNOW when we see perfection. It feels... distunctly different from everything else, and it leaves you paranoid. Why? I have no idea. Its confusing when you see real life perfection, and i have yet to see that here.2009-11-22 07:30:00

To me, the gameplay has to be outstanding; I want to be jumping around all the time and bashing enemies, bosses and going through quirky platforms. And most importantly, it as to be "classic" gameplay. If the level aims for something very different in comparision with the story levels, I might not enjoy it. That's just me, though.

In the other hand, the visuals to me are just necessarY. If the level looks extremely bad, chances are that I won't play it, but if it is enough polished to not to look bad, and the gameplay is enough good, sure, I'll give it a go.

Oh, and I need a story, If possible, not a story that takes itself too seriously, with a component of humour, if possible. It's always nice to have reason to go from point A to B.

So: Gameplay 60%, Visuals 30%, Story 10%

The perfect level is subterranean setbacks

But for me, specifically, my perfect level would need everthing subbteranean setbacks has but with warfare and tanks

It has great storyline, just enough to keep you yearning to get to the surface but not too much as to take away from gameplay. The visuals aren't perfect, but the design was flawless. An excellent design of a grimy, hellish underground grotto, with beatifully crafted machines everywhere to boot. And the gameplay, oh the gameplay... Talk about innovation... So many new concepts done perfectly. A work of art.

I wonder why so many think story is so important ?

I guess that's because we like to have a reason for going through endless traps, enemies and hazards.
I really feel more motivated to play a level if some well looking characters put some "meaning" into the level/setting. It's nice to know tht at the end of the level there's a "end" of the story, it feels more "concluded"

Thanks a lot! It's been quite a long time since it's release, it's nice to know that some people does still remember it! Here, have some rep!

woot! what i mean by a level that "hurts" ... Zelda OOT, and halflife 2... the 2 greatest games of all time. not an opinion here, thats undisputed fact (lol) but when you play those games, dont you feel a certain twinge in your gut that says "oooh lala is perfect!" thats what i feel.2009-11-23 05:39:00

Wow, what wonderful answers and comments. I particularly enjoyed reading Robotid's & Kelder's responses. How insightful. I'm currently trying to create my first "story" level and all these comments are quite helpful. Thanks everyone for sharing.

I'm surprised nobody said anything about replay-value or FUN! A perfect level got to have replay value IMHO and ofcourse good gameplay/fun and graphics. I don't really care for "a story" as my perfect level doesn't even have textbubbles.

cheers,

oh yea! i didnt even think of that! replay value. If a level has replay value, and becomes a longer experience while keeping the same ammount of fun (replaying crap isnt great) then that puts it one step closer i suppose.2009-11-23 23:12:00

Something that has a new type of gameplay, something never seen before in a LittleBigPlanet level. The level also needs an amazing background to match an amazing and breath taking story. Every bit needs to be worked on and examined, and cheese. There needs to be cheese.2009-11-25 02:17:00

why do you say no puzzle challenges? Puzzles with advanced logic and lots of moving parts and that make you sit and think make a level more fun IMHO2009-11-25 03:43:00
