Multiplication Machine [Preview]Hibbsi91
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/2218/calcplay.jpgThis is a preview for an upcoming level that aims to showcase the amount of logic one can put in a level and still be able to make it quite detailed and decorated.
all
Multiplication Machine (just a preview, still in beta)

What does it do?
It takes any two numbers from 0 and 99, multiplies them, and displays the result in .6 seconds after the "enter" button is pressed.

Umm, why on earth did you want to make that?
I'm hoping to show that even if you have an unbelievable amount of logic mechanisms, your level can still be very well decorated and quite detailed.

Ok, so what does it look like?
Like this:
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/2218/calcplay.jpg
(that's what it looks like for now, I still have a lot more to do)

That can't be too complicated.
Oh, really?
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/3252/calccreate.jpg
In this one picture, there are 89 emitters, 14 lights, 2 rockets (you can't see the smoke in this picture), 8 sound items, 12 pistons, and a button and 4 3-way switches. Believe it or not, this is the least complicated part of the level. To see the real "guts" of the level, one would have to play it when it gets published.

What's up with those tube things?
Those are the main part of the theme I have going on in this level. Instead of just having the numbers be in boxes and that be all, I made this to look like a machine (hence the name). The tubes have floaty coming out of where the number input boxes are and the floaty goes up and off of the screen, and when you hit the button for the answer, some floaty comes down the tubes on the right, and into the answer display.

When can I play it?
If you want to, right now. Just tell me if you want to help test it out, and give any input you feel you want to give.

Update
I may extend this level to explain how this works, thermometer permitting. I always found it a tad frustrating that not often (that I've seen) a complex logic level takes the time to explain what's going on. I assume that at least a few people want to know how some level works when they visit it, but most of the time, the level provides a jetpack and an arrow pointing to the logic stuff. (By complex logic level, I mean something like, say, a calculator. Not logic tutorials, displays, and the like.) Any comments or ideas as to how I go about doing this are very appreciated.

I'd love to have a go. I enjoy that you decided to decorate it up. Who says that a glorified calculator can't be sexy?

I'm interested to know how efficient the logic is, and if it's be possible to reduce the impact on the thermo.

The real question is, why isn't every glorified calculator sexy?

I'm pretty sure that I've optimized the logic as much as I could possibly could, and without any decoration the entire thing only takes up 3/4 of the thermometer (just a smidge over).

I'll send you the details of getting the key for the locked level.

I would love to have a crack at cracking it. I'm pretty quick with multiplication so I won't miss any mistake it might make.2009-11-21 08:33:00

I can think of 1, maybe 2 ways to get this sort of thing switching on 0.5 seconds. Either way is impressive, so kudos to you sir.

I may get chance to check it out later, but this weekend is busy, and I have assassin's creed two firmly stuck in my PS3

Cool, I'll be uploading an updated version in a couple hours, I'll tell you then.

Thanks, and I'll also tell you after I update it.

Can I add both of you on PSN?

Wow, i love the looks of the machine!!!

Thanks! I'm really trying to promote A) There was a ton of thermo left and B) I'm not just a logic junkie, and I can make some cool looking stuff.

I did a pretty detailed explanation of my Player Tracking Device in my level 'Creator Pack Tutorial- The PTD'.

At the end of the level- you have the option of a detailed review of the logic. Grab the sponge and fly over to see how i explained the PTD in order for people to understand it and use it in their own level.

Check it out and tell me what you think... but i feel its important to make it an optional extra.

Have fun!

Actually, I think it was that very level that made me think about adding explantion to this level. One level that confused me in particular was LittleBigCalculator. I still have no idea what's going on there 2009-11-23 17:17:00

Have you thought of making a idiot's guide? Show how to make it even if you're a newbie?
I ask because I could probably make a calculator but ADD kicks in.

How many materials did you use to make this?2009-11-25 11:22:00

How many materials did you use to make this?

How many materials? Let's see..
All of the logic stuff is made of dark matter, glass, and pink floaty.
The number displays use dissolve.
The walls, floor, and number display boxes use MGS embossed cardboard, all 3 MGS non-VR metals, and barbed wire metal.
There's now a LBPC sign at the entrance that uses all 3 MGS VR metals.
The tubes with stuff going through it uses MGS gekko skin metal, glass, orange floaty, and basic stone.

So I think that comes out to be 14 materials. There may be more or less in the future, though.

I don't think I'll be able to fit all of the explanations in. I could do some, but if I'm going to do any explaining at all, I'm going to do it properly. So maybe later, I'll work on explaining things, in a different level.2009-11-25 17:01:00

Make sure you move all the logic in close so the player can find them. I had to fly around blindly looking for them.

Nice work, though.

Thanks, and will do. I have the logic in "working" position (the wires sometimes completely cover objects if there's a lot of them too close together lol), but I will move everything in closer, and maybe make it smaller for display.

By the way, what did you think of the effects when you hit the button? I have some plans for something more elaborate, but I haven't decided if I want to keep what I have so far, too.

Um... they were pretty good. I think it would be nice to make the floaties come out only when you bit the buttons, so it gives it more purpose. I don't really have any complaints, though.2009-11-25 17:17:00

Just played this. Very detailed and I was amazed at how the thing actually works! And I still have no idea how it works. It seems to work perfectly - I just did some simple multiplications on the machine and as far as I could tell it works. I liked the way the floaty things make it seem like the machine is actually working, rather then it just having numbers appear.
two suggestions:
1. Sometimes when you pull the switch to change a number the number disappears, and you have to pull the switch again to make another number appear. Not a big deal but just somthing I noticed.
2. Maybe fill in the floor at the bottom abit? Not sure if this is something you intended but you can see underneath the floor and the lights below. But I appreciate this is still a work in progress so I have no doubt you'll sort something out

If you are still doing F4F though, It'd be cool if you gave my level a play and tell me what you think?

And if you update the level again, just tell me and I'll give it another go! The logic is amazing!

1) Yeah that's an annoying thing I'm trying to fix, but if there's no number there it is essentially a "0" so the machine will still work.
2) I'm planning to, I just have it open for now in case I would need to change something.

And I'll check out your level when I play next!

awesome good to know =). Just one question - how did you come up with the logic? I mean, I couldn't find it after abit of flying around with the jetpack, but I can see it works and all. I'll try and view the logic abit later when I play next. If you want me to test it out at any time - just ask 2009-11-26 16:50:00

Well the logic is there, maybe one or two screen-widths away. I have it so far away to keep the wires from becoming too much of a mess. I will move them closer eventually, and make it easier to see.

Whoops, I completely missed this post!
Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. In order to understand it, though, one would need to know how binary works, and I guess I could explain that so everybody that plays it knows what's going on.
