The official LBP NA download delay thread: **Available for download NOW!**

Archive: 17 posts

There's a lot of information out there right now regarding the delayed release of the downloadable version of LittleBigPlanet for PSP for the North America region. I'm having trouble keeping everything straight and I think I started half the threads.

At the risk of having thread overload, I decided it would be best to consolidate all known official information about the situation into a single source. This will help everyone find the information they're looking for, LBPC members and lurkers alike. I will keep this thread updated with the latest news and bump it as necessary.

Here's the official scoop, in the order it all happened:

November 16:
NA PSN Store updated around 10pm PST. Assassin's Creed Bloodlines (which shares LBP PSP's Nov 17th release date) is added to the store, LBP is not.

November 17:
NA PSN Store is down for several hours undergoing maintenance. No announcements of any kind are made regarding a delay to the LBP download. UMD version of the game is released in US stores.

November 18, 10am PST:
First official word from Sony comes as part of a PlayStation blog post titled "LittleBigPlanet Goes Portable! (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/11/littlebigplanet-goes-portable/)":
The process, however, has not been without its share of hiccups. We are aware that the game is not yet available on the PlayStation Store, but we?re currently working around the clock to get this issue worked out so keep your eyes peeled for updates this week. We appreciate you bearing with us!

November 19:
LBP is available to download from the EU PSN Store.

November 19, 2am PST:
Sam_Protagonist (SCEA Senior Community Development Manager) posts (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&thread.id=106998&view=by_date_ascending&page=1) in a thread on the LittleBigWorkshop site:

While it is hoped to be able to release the digital version of LittleBigPlanet Portable today, the nature of the delay means that this may not be possible. The reference to "updates this week" in the quoted message from this thread does not mean store updates, it is referring to news updates.

I realise that this is disappointing news, and while the likelihood is that the game will not be out until next week there is a slim possibility that it'll arrive today. We'll update further once there's more news.

November 19, 9am PST:
Sam provides further insight into the nature of the problem with the LBP download with a couple more posts (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&thread.id=106998&view=by_date_ascending&page=5):
The delay of the North American digital release has been caused by a late error found with the game that would cause problems with online connections for some users. The delay has been rectified, but it has needed to clear testing again before it can be released.

If it clears testing today it will be released today, if not it will release with the first store update after testing has been passed. It's regrettable that there is any delay, particularly given PSP-Go users' reliance on digital delivery, but it has been unavoidable.
Unfortunately I can only answer questions when I have the right information, and it's not been until now that the full picture of what the delay is down to has been known to me.

The different releases of the game in different regions are, perhaps unsurprisingly, different to one another which is why others are not affected by the same problem. I'm not certain where you heard that it was a PSN issue causing the delay, but that's not the information I have.

If there's any more to report I'll update further, and if the game is not coming today I'll update as soon as I know.

November 20:
UMD version of the game is released in EU stores.

November 20, 3am PST:
Sam posts (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&thread.id=106998&view=by_date_ascending&page=18) that the next NA PSN Store update will be on November 24th, LBP download likely to be included:
As is obvious by now the game did not release yesterday as it did not become ready in time. Apologies to those of you who have been eagerly awaiting the release of the game, and please be assured that everything that can be done to speed this process along is being done.

The next store update is Tuesday 24th and the best information I currently have is that the game will launch at that time. If anything changes before then we'll update again.

November 20, 4am PST:
Patch v2.01 is released for all versions of LBP PSP currently in circulation in all regions. Create mode bugs and several other minor issues with the game are addressed.

November 21, 10:30am PST:
Sam posts (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&thread.id=108137&view=by_date_ascending&page=1) again that the game is likely to be out on Tuesday, but there is no guarantee:

I can't give any assurances that the game will be out on Tuesday, but it is the next store update so there's a reasonable chance. Unfortunately I've nothing more concrete that that right now, but I'm aiming to get a final date by Monday so we can stop all this guess work.

November 22:
Comment #19 on the latest "PlayStation Around the Web" blog post provides the very first definitive answer regarding the game's rescheduled release on the 24th:

Darth_Snider | November 22nd, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Sooo? LBP on Tuesday?

Jeff Rubenstein replied on November 22, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Yes.

Sam_Protagonist confirms (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&message.id=108783#M108783) Nov 24th game release with Cambridge Studios:

I've double checked with Cambridge Studio and they've confirmed that the game will be out tomorrow. To be absolutely certain I'll also try to get confirmation from the SCEA PSN team, but right now things are looking promising.

November 23, 9:16am PST

It is definitely releasing tomorrow on PSN.

November 23, 12:20pm PST
The latest Sack it to Me (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/11/littlebigplanet-sack-it-to-me-the-white-house-edition/) Playstation Blog post also confirms a November 24th release for LBP PSP:

What I don't understand is if, just saying, the game is ready tomorrow, why can't they release the game then? Why make people wait if it's ready? I've never understood why nothing is released on the PS Store unless it's a Tuesday or a Thursday.2009-11-20 20:59:00

Generically speaking, there is a lengthy process associated with any software release. Steps typically include debug, user acceptance testing, optimization, and QA just to name a few off the top of my head. I don't pretend to understand all the technical details of the video game industry, but I do know that there's a heck of a lot going on in the background most people never see.

Is that exactly what's going on here? Nobody can say for sure, perhaps not even Sam. What we do know is that they are fast-tracking whatever process is taking place, and if they're telling us Tuesday as the current line in the sand, then Tuesday it is. If it was truly ready, I'm sure it would be out as we speak.

If Sony releases LBP PSP on the US PS Store, everyone will be happy. But this delay in one of the biggest games for the PSP, will likely change some people's thoughts about buying a PSP Go in the future. And this delay has likely left an impact on the owners of the PSP Go. I visited the LBW board yesterday, and some people said that they regret buying a PSP Go because LBP PSP was the reason they bought it in the first place, and they said that they should have bought a PSP-3000 instead.

Anyway, thanks for creating this thread, Taffey. The Lurkers and LBPC members, would now know where to look for information regarding the delay of the release of LBP PSP, on the US PlayStation Store.

I was pretty crushed that LBP Psp (download copy) hadn't shipped last week. So much so, that I'd grabbed that Assassins Creed Bloodlines instead.. Not a bad game, but honestly, what I REALLY wanted was LBP.. Happy that it'll be in the store today.. My PSPgo will be happy.. ^_^2009-11-24 12:09:00

I'm not a big fan of downloading full games. In fact I just walked into BestBuy this Saturday without know LBP PSP was even out so when I saw it I immediately bought it.
Speaking of which what happened to the December 11 release date? I thought I was buying the game early until I saw it in another GameStop. Would've been cool because I got the original LBP for PS3 on October 25 last year as opposed to the 28.

It's available for download on the NA PSN right now. I'm downloading currently. It's about an 80 minute download for just the game.2009-11-25 00:02:00

Ah, well you're all set then. Some games (such as LBP) lock out background downloads when you play them, so it's probably best you're downloading directly to your Go anyway.2009-11-25 00:33:00
