My First Level - Little British Artists
Archive: 19 posts
Finally got myself together enough (after a few weeks of pithering about getting my head round the nuts and bolts of LBP) to get a proper coherent level in progress. My idea is to do a Modern Art gallery style level including puzzles based around works of art by 20th/21st Century British Artists (chose British artists to start off with - plan is to do further gallery-style levels with American and European artists if it all goes according to plan. So far I've got rooms based on: Damien Hirst Antony Gormley Gilbert and George Anish Kapoor Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson and I'm planning to do ones for: Rachel Whiteread Anthony Caro Bridget Riley (If you want to see the artworks I'm using as inspiration, have a look in my photobucket album here (http://s37.photobucket.com/albums/e57/hwlb23/LBP%20Art%20Inspirations/).) Now I reckon that I can probably get another four rooms in before my thermometer goes 'pop' and I'm running out of inspiration so any suggestions for other artists would be gratefully received. Bear in mind that I'm still very much a newbie and pretty limited by ability (and lack of stuff - still working my way through getting my 100%s on the story levels :blush so simple bold abstract stuff is best for me to work with at the moment. I'll try to get some screenshots of the work in progress up once I've, um, worked out how to do that... In the meantime - wish me luck.... | 2009-11-19 22:11:00 Author: Ozmosis23 Posts: 24 |
Sounds like fun *wishes good luck* I don't remember what the level was called, but I remember that I once came across a level where sackboy visited a museum by the name of MOMA. you might be able to search for it for ideas | 2009-11-19 22:18:00 Author: Burnvictim42 Posts: 3322 |

Good luck with your first level - it's always both exciting and nerve-wracking working on it! As to additional artists, I'm probably not much help I'm afraid, but you could always use the room you have left for a bit more background info about the artists you ARE featuring, just so the player gets more info on their work and career etc. (Apologies if you've already done this!). Sounds like a good idea though - I hope you'll post the details in the Level Showcase when you publish it. Cheers | 2009-11-19 22:28:00 Author: MrsSpookyBuz Posts: 1492 |
Those artworks look really cool, and I hope you are able to transfer them into LBP in a way you are happy with. *Also wishes luck* Also, welcome to LBPCentral! | 2009-11-19 22:36:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Good luck!!! I've tried my hand at a bit of art based on the infamous Banksy. It's under the level 'Street Art' with my PSN ladylyn1... I decided to use a cut-out technique a bit like Banksy does but each piece took a long time to make. I think if you are going to make an entire gallery it will take quite a while. I suppose coming from Bristol you're pretty used to his style of art anyway! | 2009-11-19 23:17:00 Author: ladylyn1 Posts: 836 |
Thanks for all the advice and encouragement everyone. @ladylyn - Just moved to Bristol and was gutted to miss Banksy's show down here by a couple of weeks - I'll check out your level - next best thing! | 2009-11-19 23:23:00 Author: Ozmosis23 Posts: 24 |

Aw just done the Banksy level - superb - not sure what to be more jealous of - your LBP skills or the fact you got to the show Gonna try the Myst levels now - loved that game! | 2009-11-19 23:33:00 Author: Ozmosis23 Posts: 24 |
Thanks! lol, just to warn u... Myst takes about 1 hour to complete! For some quick levels my Whichever way the Wind Blows series is best and probably what im most well known for. | 2009-11-19 23:39:00 Author: ladylyn1 Posts: 836 |
I have some "modern" artist you may be interested in looking at. Ralph Steadman (The artist behind Fear and Loathing) Mars-1 (Trippy, very colorful paintings, don't know how easy it would be to recreate) Haruki Murakami (A very intricate Japanese surrealist) Josh Keyes ( Paintings of animals and nature. Really interesting stuff and my favorite artist.) Hope that helps I'll think up more if possible. I'm a huge art junkie too so just hit me up with any questions. | 2009-11-20 06:13:00 Author: Fertile Decline Posts: 91 |
Thanks! lol, just to warn u... Myst takes about 1 hour to complete! Well I managed to finish the Stoneship age - though that's probably 'cos that's the one I remember most from teh original. I'll work my way through the other ages later. It's very cool though. I have some "modern" artist you may be interested in looking at. Really interesting stuff and my favorite artist.) Oh thanks - I love Ralph Steadman's work -he did another couple of books with Hunter S. as well as Fear and Loathing - The Curse of Lono is well worth tracking down. If you like his stuff you should also check out Gerald Scarfe who's quite similar - don't think he's that well known in the States apart from the work he did for Pink Floyd's The Wall. Josh Keyes' stuff is interesting - I'm not usually that into naturalism/realism but he's given it an interesting twist. Can't seem to find any images for Murakami though - can only find a writer by that name. But it's a good point I'm going to have to do a Japanese gallery as well..just thinking about it now I'm getting ideas for Yayoi Kusama, Tomoko Takahashi, Yoko Ono and Mariko Mori. Blimey - this is gonna keep me busy. I did manage to get a screenshot last night of the Antony Gormley room on my level - image is a bit ropey, but it should give you an idea : http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e57/hwlb23/APhoto.jpg And the original: http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e57/hwlb23/LBP%20Art%20Inspirations/newcastleangel20of20the20north-1.jpg | 2009-11-20 12:10:00 Author: Ozmosis23 Posts: 24 |

Pictures look great!!! I'm trying to remember the name of another creator, who has done some art style levels: Im pretty sure his psn is: 'Accumulationone' or 'Accumulationnone' I might be completely wrong... But he has two levels you might be interested in... 1) An art gallery with a number of pieces in by other creators such as Squirlin. 2) A level- unfortunately i've forgotten the title- which is themed on Damien Hirst's art. Its got a German(y) kinda title and is very very well made. In fact this level had 5* for quite a while, but has since dropped to 4. Id recommend you play both! | 2009-11-23 12:15:00 Author: ladylyn1 Posts: 836 |
I'm trying to remember the name of another creator, who has done some art style levels: Im pretty sure his psn is: 'Accumulationone' or 'Accumulationnone' You were right the 2nd time. It's AccumulationNone. He is good online friend of my girlfriend and a really nice guy. His artwork is incredible and have been hoping to get him to join LBPC. I believe the level name you are after is Wunderkammer. He is currently working on the 2nd. Oh and to the OP... cool screenies btw and good luck on your first level. Don't hesitate to ask if you need help figuring anything out! | 2009-11-23 14:34:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Ah cheers both. I'll definitely check out those other levels. Have now got rooms (sort of) finished for Rachel Whiteread, Hepworth/Nicholson and in the middle one for Susan Hiller (bit of a cheat 'cos she's an American who works and lives in the UK - still if that's OK for the Turner Prize panel it's OK for me.) Tracey Emin next I think... that's going to be a challenge. | 2009-11-23 18:23:00 Author: Ozmosis23 Posts: 24 |
Yeah do... they're brilliant | 2009-11-23 18:31:00 Author: ladylyn1 Posts: 836 |
