Puzzled

Hey everyone! I'm back to LBP!
Okay, so I'm bouncing in between Uncharted and LBP, mostly to get ideas for puzzles.
So, I'm making my very first crack at a sophisticated level that I am hoping makes spotlighted. Obviously I'm spending alot of time on figuring out what should go here, and how can I make that have multi purposes. I was inspired by the Logicpack (a must play, learn, and create) when I saw how easy it was to make some really complex things.
Where I need help, I have lost total inspiration on the puzzles. I was on a roll until my girlfriend got home and I haven't been able to get back on track.
I want my puzzles to be made by me, from my mind. As much as I would appreciate any samples, I wouldn't include them (in case they are amazing, then you deserve credit and it would be rude of me not to get you some limelight).
So does anyone *cough* mrsupercomputer, jackofcourse, rtm223, comphermc, msspookybluz, ccubb *cough* sorry, little congestion, have things that inspire you when making a puzzle?

Um, not really... I just fiddle around in create mode until I figure something fun out. CCubb is much better at thinking of puzzles than I am, but it's all about finding something that you would enjoy doing in a level. It surely helps when you have a grasp of logic, in being able to expand the possibility of puzzles, but some of the most innovative puzzles I've seen are relatively simple in nature. Taking inspiration of from other games is always helpful. Case in point, I borrowed several ideas from the game Portal, in my Aperture Science series.2009-11-20 01:36:00

Was that not a remake of Portal anyways?

It was inspired by, but not a remake. There were common elements, but outside of a few copy/paste jobs, the puzzles were completely original to LBP...

...anyways. The point is that you can take inspiration from anywhere. Find a puzzle you like in a flash game? Try to work it into LBP. Enjoy some old-school puzzle game? See how well it works in LBP. And so on...

Puzzles are interesting because they could almost be anything.... image matching, rotating floors, do certain tasks in a short amount of time...

Usually buildinjg puzzles is easiest if you start with the solution and work backwards - kind of like a murder mystery writer would start with the solution and work back to the beginning.

If you're building a maze, you could start with mapping out the correct path, then put obstacles in the way.

Was there any specific type of puzzle you were trying to build?

Nothing in particular. I want to make puzzles that are fun to solve but take a bunch of steps. One a puzzle I already have, you have to incorporate means of passing obstacles into the problem solving. A two way lift, a block, a slider, a lever, and elevating steps are all there for you to figure out the puzzle. It's not hard but you have to think about what else happened after I did this step. I am going to increase the difficulty up to where you have to almost put clues together and notice the not so obvious. I figure by the time the player is done, that they are going to think the puzzles were easy as achievements on Hannah Montana (Sorry, I had to [okay I'm not sorry]).
So basically "Figure out where this goes" type of puzzles.

Sounds like fun, but be careful- what may seem like an easy puzzle to you can be a stumper to another. (Unfortunately) I don't think i've made a puzzle in LBP that hasn't stumped at least one person, and I definitely didn't do it on purpose.

This is where ample playtesting will be a boon, as people let you know where and how they get confused.

I don't have the best luck finding playtesters. My puzzles are all very very easy to someone who pays alot of attention. But I am going to add a bunch of hints to the first couple of puzzles. And, I'm making sure to add small things like a bungee jump and a space shuttle ride. I want to include alot of stuff that Adrenaline Junkies like to do, still brainstorming the wall climbing and base jumping.
I think I will add a give up buttons for people just in case.

A good idea is to develop a basic, simple, maybe even original puzzling element or concept (like: "Turn all the lights on to continue", "Insert key-object to open door" etc.). Include this very basic puzzle at the beginning of your level, so people get to know what they're supposed to do. Then, add more steps and elements to make it more complex as you go on. Well, this is what I enjoy the most - being given a basic gameplay element and having to overcome increasingly complex forms of the same element as I go on.2009-11-20 10:36:00
