Ratings

Ok, I was just playing JackOfCourse's new level on LBP PSP (an employee has it here at work).

I noticed when I was finished playing, it asked me to rate the level. It defaulted to 1 star.... so, does this mean everytime someone plays a level in LBP PSP the default rating will be 1 star?.... so if they don't care what the rating is and click through, it will end up being 1 star?

Anyone know anything about this?

(please don't treat this as a hysteria thread - I'm not trying to cause an issue... just asking)

Oh that's really bad if it's true. Half the people who play the level won't care if it does well or not so they'll rate it whatever! Bad move SCE Cambridge. If this is true, will they care enough about it to fix the issue? I don't really know what they are like.2009-11-19 20:16:00

Anyone have their e-mail? Mm seems to be (somewhat) easy to contact, so maybe someone can let them (Sony Cambridge) know what's going on and they'll work on it, like Mm would...2009-11-19 20:22:00

It has nothing to do with Mm...

But Mm's email is hello@mediamolecule.com

But they don't respond too much, I've found the easy way to get a response is through Kenny (kenny@mediamolecule.com)

I'm just saying it'd be nice to discover that they (Sony Cambridge) are somewhat responsive like Mm...

(I've actually e-mailed Mm with no response a couple of times, but know plenty of people who did hear back...)

One can only hope...

Just to reiterate - I may be missing something. I tried it and that was my initial impression, but obviously I have not played around with it to know what the affect is on ratings. If anyone has any accurate information for how it works, let us know.2009-11-19 22:34:00

You are correct sir, if you don't think about your rating and just hurry it along the player will end up with one star. 2009-11-20 08:40:00

i wonder is the thinking behind this that if a level is really good people will bother to rate it, and if its not people will just leave it as is. Now the average score of a level will surely go down but wouldn't this make it easier for the really good ones to rise to the top with only a 4 star rating?2009-11-20 10:23:00

Could be.... and it may work out well in the end if everyone is on the same playing field and it doesn't actually rate a level 1 star if they leave it that way.... however, for creators like me it certainly creates a dilemma if it automatically sits on 1 star. Taking into account the current LBP mentality, a more challenging level will get SLAMMED, as apposed to an easier level that will get really high marks. There were ways in the current LBP that my levels could survive, since many would just leave my rating alone.

So, without also adding genre and difficulty searching, statistically it may have a disadvantage to certain types of levels. I may have to start WAY tuning down my level difficulty.... maybe even throw in some Mario characters.

That is...if you start creating levels for the psp version.
Personally not convinced by create mode on a handeld, it does what it should and most of the functions are there but control issues and minor annoyances (can't flip or copy objects, common!!) keep it from shining. I also can't see myself spending hours in create mode on a psp.

I think I feel the same way, I have limited enough time as it is with LBP and I would find it far more satisfying to work on the ps3 version.

....wel that, coupled with the fact I don't actually have a psp

I speak to someone from Cambridge quite a lot, I will ask them and see whether this is an oversight or a planned thing.2009-11-22 22:01:00

Sounds good - I definately think it will help hearing it from a creators standpoint. I would personally think this would be a GREAT time to not make rating mandatory before the system gets out of control. At leat then we won't be at the mercy of kids being lazy and 1 star rating it just because they don't care.

As for creating on the system, I've been playing with it for several days and I can't see myself building big, complex levels on it - but this may be a great opportunity to build smaller addictive 1 player gameplay so I've started working on an idea.

Honestly, the create tools aren't bad at all once you get used to them a bit - it's certainly FAR different than the PS3 create experience, and I think less-experienced creators are going to have a tough time - it isn't nearly as intuitive working with objects and shapes.

100% agree with this. Create mode is actually pretty good. It's just different. Sure there are a few bugs but there hasn't been anything devastating that has stopped me creating so far, and I dare say that I've probably created more than most up to now too.

I've said this in quite a few places, it is definitely a lot more fiddly and no where near as forgiving at the ps3 version, but that's to be expected really. It really helps if you plan out what you're doing so you can get it made in the simplest and most efficient way. That way you're less likely to have to keep editing and changing things, and that is when the psp is a lot less forgiving than the ps3.

I've had a couple of days off creating myself but I should be getting my level back from someone at Cambridge tomorrow so will be able to continue with it then. Hopefully should have it published pretty soon!
