Rock band 2

Archive: 13 posts

Hey guys I havn't posted on the boards in a while mainly because I've been addicted to Rock Band 2. Me and my buddies, being the losers that we are have even started our own band called The Bong-n-a-Bowl Snowmen(Dont ask. It was my buddy vics idea and we thought it was hilarious so we went with it).

I havn't seen any threads on it so I was wondering if any of you guys have played it already? I'm assuming most of you are either waiting for the ps3 version or live in europe and are getting it god knows when. But if you get the chance definately try it out the song list is amazing and they added an awesome online mode called Battle of the Bands. Battle of the bands is pretty cool they give you a setlist and they score you on different aspects and give you your world ranking on the spot. And while a little expensive the Ion Premium Drum set is sweet it feels like the real thing and doesn't make that stupid clanking noise like the original ones.

Anyways just wanted to let you know I'm back and try out rock band 2 you'll thank me later

Hmmm. I think I like Guitar Hero better, simply because of the guitar setup. Dumb squares... 2008-09-24 17:45:00

As a PS3 owner and big supporter of Rock Band, I feel abused by EA and Microsoft this time around. It's ridiculous to have a timed exclusive in a case such as this. That being said, I'm sure it's a good game and I'll happily play it if someone wants to give me a copy.

On top of everything else, I'm not convinced that the PS3 version will be up to snuff with its 360 counterpart; I'm sure there are just as many bugs this time around as there were the first. I was a loyal HMX customer, but I'll probably just be content with what I have so far.

You can tell that I'm upset about the matter. It annoys me when a company like HMX finds success on the PlayStation - whether it be with Frequency, Amplitude, or Guitar Hero - and then they turn there backs on Sony when Microsoft offers them a big fat check.

The same can be said for the Grand Theft Auto series. Microsoft wasn't interested in that series prior to GTAIII; as far as they were concerned it was a dead franchise. Then GTAIII comes along and is deemed one of the most revolutionary titles in years and suddenly Microsoft wants to invest. Thankfully, the people at Rockstar aren't as ungrateful as those over at HMX as they're working on exclusives for the PS3 because they believe it to be the console best suited for the games they want to make.

Sorry, tangent there. In short, I want to get Rock Band 2, but I'll be content to wait and see how the PS3 release plays out. In the meantime, I'm more than happy with the LBP beta and will undoubtedly be playing this masterpiece for months to come.

I got to admit the squares did annoy me at first but honestly after about 30 min you get used to it and its not even an issue anymore. And while I enjoy the difficulty of Guitar hero I find on a lot of the harder songs they add notes in where there shouldn't be just to make it harder. For a good example play Cherub Rock on Rock Band and then on Guitar hero. Its a little harder on Guitar Hero which is fine but you'll notice theres little notes splashed in in Guitar Hero where there arent in Rock Band and if you actually play Guitar(I dont but my friend does hes the one that explained this to me) you'll know that its not supposed to be there its just thrown in for difficulty. Anyways I like both but I still think Rock Band has a better flow to it. But thats just me and Guitar Hero World Tour is coming out soon and I'm sure they've done some fine tuning of their own. Its good to have all this competition it makes the games better overall.2008-09-24 18:00:00

It's not a huge deal to me, it's just a little pet peeve.

I see your point man but if I'm not mistaken Sony had an exclusivity deal with Harmonix which they then cut out after Frequency and amplitude made them almost nothing. Guitar Hero was their first project not published by sony and just so happened to be their biggest hit. And another thing you have to consider is that MTV owns Harmonix and EA just publishes the games for them. Harmonix at the end of the day probably has nothing to do with this exclusivity deal its more of a cash grab by MTV/EA. its kind of an unfair to say that Harmonix sold out Sony they need the funding from somewhere and Sony had them and let them go and now EA/MTV are just making as much as they from their investment. If sony still had a deal with Harmonix do you think for a second Rock Band/GuitarHero would be coming out on Xobx 360? Dont hate on Harmonix they're the ones coming up with these amazing concepts. Hate on EA/MTV for screwing sony for an extra 50 million(or whatever they got from it)

Well I understand what you are all saying but bottome line they said they had such problems with sony and blamed that the fans were not into as much as xbox fans. Well when you can't allow Guitar Hero guitars to work on your game or at least send a seperate guitar for the game in a timely manner of course sony players are not going to be into your game.
To me it seemed like they blammed the fans for not downloading songs and such. Well you can have that game xbox.

I never heard about harmonix bashing sony fans but the Guitar Hero Guitar not working was Activisions fault. Microsoft has a policy where that if you design a controller for their system its open sourced for developers. You cant build a peripheral only designed to work for your game theyre forced to develop it so that anybody can design a game to work with your custom 360controller(in this case plastic guitar lol). Sony has no such policy so when Harmonix developed a fix for the ps3 Guitar Hero Guitars Activision blocked its release by asking sony not to release it and sony had no choice but to stop the update from being released because they had no policy against it.2008-09-24 18:48:00

All of your points are well founded. I can't condemn anyone who is trying to make a buck. I just get annoyed that the end user is the one getting the shaft at the end of the day.

EDIT:

Actually, Sony now does have a policy in place for such events. The Les Paul (Guitar Hero III) now works with Rock Band. Too little, too late if you ask me.

Thanks man. I'm glad to come onto a forumn and have a RATIONAL conversation about this. At the end of the day neither of us are wrong as its our opinion but trying to have this discussion on a board like IGN just degenerates into mindless console bashing.

And I'm glad that sony smartened up. I remember reading when the issue popped up that apparently most peripheral makers always made their hardware open source as most of the time theyre barely making any profit off the hardware anyways and it was seen as more of a reason for people to buy it if it has more games combatible with it. Activision saw it as a chance to stick it to Harmonix by making it uncompatible with Rock Band and using a BS excuse by claiming lost profits on something theyre not even making money on to begin with. Your right, I dont understand why game companies do these screwjobs on eachother when the people effected the most are us, the gamers responsible for all the money theyre raking in.

I do my best to keep all things rational at the very least. As you said, we've all been frustrated and annoyed at some point. It's better to empathize and identify with others than try to one-up them all the time.2008-09-24 20:16:00

Exactly, couldn't have said it better myself.

Although after going through the whole Harmonix/Sony thing in my head, do you realize if Sony had played their cards right the Guitar Hero franchise could've been a Sony exclusive!!! Think about it even though Frequency/Amplitude sold horribly they still couldve justified staying with them due to all the critical acclaim it was receiving. If they stuck with them when they made Guitar Hero with all the success they had they'd lock them up long term and thats it Guitar Hero is Sonys exclusively. If that was the case I'm convinced Sony would be ahead of the pack in this gen's console race considering its one of the highest selling franchises out there across all 3 platforms. Whoever made the call at sony to let harmonix go must be kicking themselves big time lol.
