The Discover New Music Thread

Archive: 113 posts

Welcome to the Music Thread! Post some unique material and talk about different things that have had an impact on your taste in music!

-BODY-
There are quite a few songs in which friends of mine have noted as "changing the way they saw music". I've listed some down there so you could give them a listen. This probably won't happen to everyone, but what I ask you is what do you think? Are there any songs that changed your taste? Do you regret clicking on this thread? What's your favorite restaurant?

SURGICAL WARNING: Depending on your taste, some songs may hit you in the face with awesomeness or will make you wonder if people who listen to it are mentally stable. Please don't judge TOO much. Some songs may take long periods of time to sink in.

Lots of artists have changed the way i saw music.
Aphex Twin is certainly one of them. The most important in my case are probably Autechre, they've completly changed they way i saw music, it was if my eyes/ears suddenly went.... open!

A song that made me appreciate music the most was probably Gantz Graf by Autechre. It made me really open to different kinds of music. Some people may never come to truly appreciate the vast styles of music, but it's their flaw.

You might like UNKLE, the album that song belongs to was made by Dj Shadow. Two albums I guaruntee you'll like are Psyence Fiction by Unkle and Endtroducing... by Dj Shadow. They're very similar and made by the same guy.

If I listen to something and feel that it's going to take me several playthroughs to get used to it, then I know I'm gonna like it Tool, Opeth, REM, Radiohead, Muse, Katatonia, Porcupine Tree, Kraftwerk, Alicia Keys, the list goes on...

The only exception is rap music.

I'm speechless after the first link... it's just so awesome!
I wish this forum didn't block all the 'sentence enhancers' because i'm not sure i can describe it without them

I love really interesting unusual songs, there are some that just drone on and once you've heard the first few beats you've heard it all.. i like the feeling that i never know what's coming up next

Theres a few other awesome songs up there that i like too (Happy up here = yay), hopefully i like some of the others just as much

edit:
Flicked through them and kind of knew which ones i'd like in the first few seconds.. download, next video.
The ones i didn't like at first i sort of gave a chance but no luck sadly

I definitely like the UNKLE link.

I'm a fan of some arcade fire myself. Namely the song "My Body is a Cage."

Honestly, I think my tastes are eclectic I pretty much enjoy the entire musical gamut. It really just depends on the mood I'm in. But when I was in high school I was all about the alt/nu-metal kind of music. I'm not sure that's the best word to describe it, but I listened to the Deftones, KoRn, NIN, Tool, A Perfect Circle, etc.

But now, I'm more of a blues/soul fan.

My favorite band for the past few years has been the Black Keys. Their music speaks to me on some kind of primal level. It makes me feel in touch with all parts of me. It's something that only blues seems to make me feel. I mean Nina Simone, Ruth Brown, Janis Joplin, the O'jays etc. There's nothing else like it.

I mean you haven't lived until you've heard Etta's Sunday Kind of Love or Nina's Here comes the Sun.

But I melt every time I hear, "The Flame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvDX0hnOd_I)" by the Black Keys.

Haha - only just joined the forum but from the music above seems like I'm among like minded souls. Never heard the Tim Exile track before so ta for that one Voodeedoo.

Gotta confess that I'm a bit of an old fossil and 'cos of that the three bands that changed my attitude to music (and without whom I'd probably not be into the likes of Porcupine tree, Aphex Twin, Royksopp etc etc.) are all from the late eighties and early nineties:

This Mortal Coil - Another Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6vW2uWsro0) (That lush singing voice is Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins who went on to sing with Future Sound of London and Massive Attack - just in case you didn't know )

Coil - The Snow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOUq7YZYUK8&feature=related)

My Bloody Valentine - Soon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvkK0mO7fXg)

But just to prove that you can teach an old dog new tricks recently changed my view of folk music (it's not all beards and jumpers you know) thanks to these two:

Rachel Unthank - Blue Bleezing Blind Drunk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46-DWHz2iKQ&feature=related)

Jim Moray - Night Visiting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8PJVQIX4ik)

It reminds me of the love theme from the Moonlight television show.

My favorite song I've heard so far is Lonely Soul.

The beginning of that song even reminds me of Wings for Marie.

Glad you started liking UNKLE.
You might like the following songs from him/them:

1. Bloodstain
2. Unreal
3. Persons and Machinery
4. Hold My Hand
5. Burn My Shadow

And maybe these tracks from Dj Shadow if you like UNKLE's underground hiphop vibe:

1. Building Steam with a Grain of Salt
2. Giving Up the Ghost
3. The Number Song
4. Mutual Slump
5. Fixed Income

Dj Shadow made UNKLE's first album, Psyence Fiction, which includes Lonely Soul and the Theme. Das sum poop'd up squaq, you dig?

I'm very picky about music too :/ well, it took me a while when I was little to know that there were other things besides AFX lol.

Nowadays I love blasting that kind of music in the car as people look at me funny while I bob my head to the near-undetectable beat XD

That afx song you posted is really strange xD

With most techno'y songs that i don't like i get a sort of headachey feeling listening to them... this though is sort of inbetween that and something i enjoy!

I don't enjoy listening to it (at least i don't think i do xD) but i keep coming back to it. It's really sort of gentle in a weird way.
Reminds me of david firths music too

Ah yeah has anyone hear heard Windowlicker?
Not sure if i can post it because it's not really lbpc-safe but it's a really cool song - the video's amazing too

lol Yeah, windowlicker is one of his more popular songs. It's a parody of mainstream music. Both that and his other song, Come to Daddy, are the most popular even though they're considered his "joke" songs XD

And yes, David Firsth [Locust Toybox?] is a big fan of AFX. He directed two music videos for his songs, "Boy/Girl" and "4".

There's a lot to AFX though, from all his aliases. He's so diverse that if needed, he'd have to give a music genre to every song he's made, lol. It took me two years to fully appreciate his tunage.

Here is a list of all the artist names he goes by:
AFX, Blue Calx, Bradley Strider, Caustic Window, DJ Smojphace, GAK, Martin Tressider, Polygon Window, Power-Pill, Prichard D. Jams, Q-Chastic, Tahnaiya Russell, The Dice Man, Soit P.P., and rumors have it he is also The Tuss.

AFX = A-ph-ex

Gants Graf is another song that i keep coming back to. I said it just sounded like noise to me earlier but it gets easier to listen to every time i hear it

editcakes:

I've started getting into UNKLE too now :3
That song you posted sounds REALLY similar to some of the stuff i remember from Jet Set Radio, really underrated game but the music was awesome! Making me want to play it again now xD

XD Yes, Jet Set Radio had an awesome guy make the soundtrack. I found out about him through that Sonic Rush game on the Nintendo DS; he made the soundtrack to that too. Banging tunage maaaaan

Since you like Aphex Twin and Autechre, you might also like Squarepusher. Try his songs My Red Hot Car, Ultravisitor, Startime, and Rhombus. They be of good soundings, yes.

AND since you might get into Unkle, I'm sure you'd also like musicians such as Dj Shadow, Thievery Corporation, Portishead, Massive Attack, Dj Krush, and many more XD

Sorry for shoving so much down your throat but there's just a whole society to it lol

Really cool to hear that Dexiro
While it sounds like a bunch of noise to many people, that songs is actually really complex, takes indeed a while to get used to and discover everything what's in the tune. Autechre always has that effect on me (interesting stuff i keep coming back to...). They also made some really beautiful laidback stuff like these ones

I'm listening to Squarepusher at the moment.
Ultravisitor reminds me of klonoa and crash bandicoot for some reason, and a little bit of lumines xD

I really like that track for some reason XD Though it makes everyone think I'm insane. But I have a feeling he'll go on to be recognized as some folk legend, like Johnny Appleseed. Try type in "Silence like the wind Dan Deacon" on Youtube search and see how well he can relate with people haha

A new two-person dreamy indie rock band made a tight debut album that I think is worth a couple hundred listens!

The band is called Mars Argo. They own a somewhat popular Youtube account, and after teasing us with some awesome music videos they finally released a full length album.

I've been listening to it on repeat for a long time now, which takes a lot to do. Tell me what you think!

http://marsargo.bandcamp.com/

My fav tracks [from top to bottom] are:
Mrs. Stradler
Machine
Technology is a Dead Bird
You don't Know Me Anymore
Monsters under my Bed
Tired Today
Suicide Birds

Sounds as clean and fresh as a baby's buttocks

I'm not sure if Fergie sampled it, though the comments claim otherwise... looking at the related videos is a music video of Fergie's Fergalicious, so THAT can't be a good sign... :O

Another artist i would like to mention is Pole. Haven't seen him mentioned here, but before i knew him I absolutely couldn't stand dub music (and all my friends did). But this guy completly changed my mind, like he found the missing link between dub and electronic music.
Some examples

Oh, it is very calming music but always with a fat dubby bass and a nice atsmophere.
Look for Pole 1, Pole 2, Pole 3 (that's how they are called, it's a yellow, blue and red album released on Scape records). I think you're gonna love them (considering your music taste )

Ah yes, I've grown up with Amon Tobin through my wii childhood :] Intelligent man, he.

But I just wanted to bring up Dubstep in this thread, and though I haven't looked much into it, I think I'd convert you all to Dubstep-ism with this epic mix I found while browsing those interweb thingies.

I can't find an independent page for this source, so I'm gonna post some directions [lol]:

http://www.cannabeatz.net/

1. Click on Link.
2. Scroll to where it says 'CannaBeatz Vol.13 by JungleVisionary [dubstep]' in dark green letters.
3. DOWNLOOOAAAD!

It should automatically appear in your itunes. It's an hour long, so the WHOLE thing in entirety isn't overall good, but theres a little snippet in there I want you all to check out.

By now I'm guessing you've either looked into it and maybe started the download or you're about to report me for spamming. I'll go with the first.

Skippy away to exactly [around] 18 minutes and 14 seconds [18:14] and just give it a good listen up until 26:46.

If you don't like what you hear, well... I dunno, delete it I guess XP But I honestly thought it was pretty good; it's the only kind of that music I like and makes me pump up my status as a hipster who eats canned goods. Thanks to all who actually tried it out! :]

[PS: Dont listen to it beyond 26:46. The song after that is just... blah; you'll know when you hit it when you hear 1-up mushrooms from mario looping. If you want to get a bit deeper, start the mix off at 15:30.]

The Downward Spiral changed everything for me. Layers, layers, and more layers of noise make it the most difficult album I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Songs for the Deaf is almost as challenging, but it wasn't as far from my taste at the time (prior to NIN, of course). However, QotSA was still quite the departure from Pearl Jam, STP, and Zeppelin.

TDS really opened up my musical tastes considerably; I've gone through too many obsessive phases to count when it comes to music. The music on my PSP as of today looks something like this:

Coheed & Cambria
HURT
The Killers
NIN
Pearl Jam
The Prize Fighter Inferno
Them Crooked Vultures
The Who

So, it's still a primarily hard rock mix, but there's some other stuff thrown in there too. Other great albums that really took me to a new place as far as music appreciation:

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Rush - Moving Pictures
Neil Young - Harvest

The band is called Mars Argo. They own a somewhat popular Youtube account, and after teasing us with some awesome music videos they finally released a full length album.

Thanks for this! I've been listening to their album for about an hour now and absolutely love it!

As for musicians who changed the way I thought about music, there are a lot! Most of them were indie bands who have become rather popular over the past couple of years, so you've probably heard of them, but I'll list them and a couple songs I like anyway.

Iron & Wine
Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tg2ukfHn-I)

Sufjan Stevens
Dear Mr. Supercomputer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZtAhW9LRug)
For The Widows In Paradise, For The Fatherless In Ypsilanti (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4tkiGvV_ek)

Andrew Bird
Not a Robot But a Ghost (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r61SuimqKq0)

Stars
Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Hm7vWmFSEU)
Ageless Beauty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNRji4YOPCs)

Of Montreal
Gronlandic Edit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBfgQvM7wtE)

The Bird and the Bee
La La La (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drhFLc3Jm48)

Clinic
Walking With Thee (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB6w3GC0Fjc)

Massive Attack
Teardrop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yftOy8kz7aE)

And for a few that you may have not heard of:

I Come To Shanghai
Pass the Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOcpTCKuulA)

The Duckworth Lewis Method

Haha yes, they're one of the exceptions to their style of music I like!
I posted something on here earlier linking to their videos on Youtube you might like, too. They're pretty intelligent.

I like indie bands however :] I'll give those artists a listen sometime! Some I've been a fan of already too, so looking forward to it!

Daft Punk and Justice were both really influential for me actually. I'd listened to Daft Punk for years but still stuck with rock music because i was so used to it even though i never enjoyed it.
Then recently i finally realised that i didn't like rock and was more into the techo-ish genres.

Since then i started looking for music a bit more openly and found a few really cool bands like Justice.

Then i came to this thread and you converted me to being open to tons of stuff, it's all good at the moment

@Voodoo
Do you know anything similar to the Unkle theme?
That songs REALLY addictive, i never seem to get bored of it and it bring back some really nice memories of playing Jet Set Radio

Oh and i'm yet to find an Amon Tobin song that i haven't thought is awesome yet

(i always have so much to say when i come into this thread, i just don't want toc ram it into one post xD)

The Unkle theme song is very distinct, being an introduction to one of the most highly anticipated albums of 1998, launching the Unkle artist career while Dj Shadow [who made most of that album] continued his own. Shadow kept his underground hiphop roots while Unkle became more rock/hiphop/alternative oriented.

I'll list five songs for each artist; Dj Shadow and Unkle to follow up to the Theme and some good Amon Tobin tunage :]

UNKLE [I forgot if I've mentioned these already... forgive me if I have!]
1. Be There
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVEJOyoEUEs
2. Bloodstain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBZ8LzPC48M
3. Rabbit in your Headlights
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqkawrslzJA
4. Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows [UNKLE Remix]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_iumitKAkY
5. Black Mass [Ignore the video]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LnHedFIBfw

DJ Shadow
1. Fixed Income
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKDwCCdL6v4
2. Six Days
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQIzjbnDKXg
3. Giving Up the Ghost
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlraU1IMJhE
4. Mongrel [Meets his Maker]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dNXMwcTAas
5. Mutual Slump
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4JAmn3uIa0

Amon Tobin
1. At the End of the Day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jaRA6nGyUg
2. Four Ton Mantis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlYBPuHeZxw
3. Bloodstone [ignore the video, its unofficial]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUHqFg-F5ts
4. Always
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdJpK5jY_jA
5. Sordid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm-ElWKYnVU

There are songs by Amon Tobin that are good but not posted onto youtube. He has so much music released with vast styles of music mixed in, that I'd recommend you dig deeper into it.

You also may be familiar with his style if you've ever played Splinter Cell or Prototype:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqWvheuVf6w

*DEEP BREATH*
Wow, those are a lot of links, no?
Lets celebrate by posting more links!
So you like Justice and Daft Punk, eh?
They be influential on me too :]
After years of them I've dug deeper and found one of my most *FAVORITE bands ever!
LINKS:
*Cut Copy - Feel the Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gMk6mZotsk
Boys Noize - Oh!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQSkRgBerM8
Luke Vibert - I Love Acid

Hope these links opened up a good 'ol can of worms for you!

I'm loving this thread - even if it is making me litter the flat with obscure bits of vinyl and cds*- much to my other half's annoyance - "Shouldn't these be on shelves?" Pah!

Still so, so much music cropping up in this thread that I love - notable mentions for Joy Division, Clinic, Sigur Ros and of course the amazing Kraftwerk.

(On the latter - if you want a laugh you really should check out Bill Bailey's very affectionate parody of Kraftwerk - Augenblich (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsD4QI2WZMA).)

Intrigued by Milton's mention of Prefuse 73 - only ever heard their remix of School of Seven Bells (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wYPwTRB-Ko) which I love - so I'll be pottering off CD shopping at the weekend.

A few more selections from my collection inspired by this thread

Plaid - Itsu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDDnuZAL9ps)

Stereolab vs Nurse With Wound - Simple Headphone Mind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMTXgCDMY98)

Neu! - Hallogallo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5316ZsVYSs) - These guys were part of the Krautrock movement with Kraftwerk - had a similar musical aesthetic but used guitars rather than synths.

Slowdive - Souvlaki Space Station (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0LIO138Z-A)

Basment Jaxx - Cish Cash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4UCFiXuGlo) - Siouxsie Sioux on vocals and a fantastic video based on Matthew Barney's Cremaster films.

And just for something a bit different a bit of classical (sort of) - you've probably all heard it on adverts and soundtrack before but I'd love to hear someone like Boards of Canada/Aphex twin do a version of it:

Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Music for a found Harmonium (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJg1NNyke2E)

Ain't music wonderful!

*Still can't get into the downloading tracks thing - still old fashioned enough to want my music attached to a 'thing'.

Ah yes, in fact I've recently discovered the wonders of Luke Vibert and Plaid, notably that very video of him you posted up! I have a feeling it'll take me over a year to truly appreciate, much like me and AFX, but it's totally worth it! :]

I've found a new love...

Luke Vibert - CozyComfy

Right now I'd feel like mentioning LCD Soundsystem, but it's 5AM and I don't feel like looking up videos and posting links right now. XD

So bottom line... check him out. Pretty cool, he.

5am? Best time of day to listen to weird electronica in my book. Though it's 2pm here and I haven't done anything constructive today cos I've been to busy listening to odd music.

With you all the way on Luke Vibert - got some of his Wagon Christ stuff on vinyl somewhere which I really must get round to digitising (although if I start unpacking another box of records from the loft I may be looking at divorce proceedings..)

Been meaning to explore LCD Soundsystem for a while now - heard "Losing My Edge" some time ago and loved it - another one for the shopping trip I think..

Hmm.... 5AM is a good time to listen to electronic music... lol.

OH and and I don't know why I havent mentioned this artist before BUT I think they're pretty awesome:

They're called Crash Course in Science, and make amazingly weird music that I somehow feel guilty singing along to in a really loud and obnoxious way.

Clicky away:
Live on the Uncle Floyd Show:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtgpoMt0m-4

[Their somewhat popular song] Cardboard Lamb:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdNH1urxXOw

Yes... when I listen to them I sing along to it like a little girl sings along to hollaback girl.

Also, just another mention of AFX; he played that Cardboard Lamb song live one on some of his mixes, as well as some other awesome undiscovered late 80's techno artists he was probably into as a lad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi9uwmRo8E4
[It starts at around 6:33 while the scary ballerina dancers with Richard's face on them are... being scary. And stuff.]

Do you know where that original loop comes from? I heard it in a really old new beat tune, don't know if that was the original though...

Skippy away to exactly [around] 18 minutes and 14 seconds [18:14] and just give it a good listen up until 26:46.
Not bad, kind of like it, It's indeed the best part of the mix

Yes, Cardboard Lamb is the original and sparked up quite a few dance remixes, lol. I forget which year it was released, though.

I always thought LCD Soundsystem's "Losing My Edge" sounded a lot like it...

ARTIST MENTION 1:
An artist I'd like to bring up is a personal favorite of mine from Warp, being one of the few indie hiphop artists I've come to wuv! He's a succesor to Aphex Twin in a way.

You've most likely heard of Flying Lotus if you watch [adult swim]; if so, you may think to yourself "Oh yeah, I remember that song!" as you listen to the links posted here below.

May not be your cup of tea, however. Depends on your style.

CLICKY AWAY:

1. Message Situation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NewrZ6ivFcY
2. RobertaFlack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbkRvclQS4M
3. Rickshaw

4. Heat Wave 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdu2v1zU27A
5. Tea Leaf Dancers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCXjL_0Ww9E

Digging deeper:

1. Fall in Love [J Dilla Tribute]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwAa6I0dmA0
2. It's a Secret
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrdsZePoEyU
3. Interference

4. Golden Diva
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr7QHFK-ZAw
5. Paper Crane Gang
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70S_7E2SPDQ

Hope you like these songs! There are plenty more great songs from him, with his ear-slushy intentionally slightly off beat hip hop, so keep digging! Thanks!

[I'll be introducing more artists as this thread progresses. Show off your favorites, too!]

Right then - just caught up (and the cd shopping list is getting longer...)

Big thumbs up for Crash Course in Science - kind of reminded me of The Flying Lizards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AutxFgxTshM&feature=related), but since they're around the same time I guess that's not entirely surprising (get the feeling that the Ting Tings may well have some albums by both in their collections...). But I'm a sucker for analog synths anyway, so any band that looks like they've got their instruments from flea markets and toyshops are alright by me.

Flying lotus added to the list as well - hmm this is turning out to be a very costly thread - good job we've got some good second hand cd places here in Bristol - now I've just got to con my partner into spending a few hours in them over the weekend...

As for the Itunes/album covers thing - my pet hate is when it decdies it knows better than you and insists on giving a track the wrong cover - I've got an album of Beethoven piano sonata's and my pod seems to be convinced that it should have the cover of a Desmond Dekker and The Aces album.

Aaaanyway - been trawling my brain for some more obscure gems for this thread and thus:

Lakuna -Lemongrass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tK39FtaGmHs&feature=related) Solo electronica project by David Narcizo (the drummer from Throwing Muses)

Slack -Painkiller (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-DcWpBx0LA)- One of my favourite tunes back from the days when I used to spend most of my weekends bouncing around old warehouses dressed like an idiot. (These days I just sit on the sofa dressed like an idiot)

The The - Infected (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey0eS-Nx6Ks&feature=PlayList&p=56B07B5D5103AD9C&index=0) - Not really obscure, thought might be new to some - fell in love with it in 1986, have been playing it to death since and still not tired of it (this is the one where I annoy all and sundry by singing loud and obnoxiously)

And finally:

Lou Rhodes - They Say (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWMgwvT5lNY) - Lou was the singer in electronica band Lamb (responsible for the sublime Gorecki (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtIeH_J-SiI)), got bored of clubs and raves, moved to a commune and reinvented herself as a melancholic folky. This track is my favourite of hers - starts of kind of fragile and wistful and then just builds and builds into something quite angry and desperate. Hmmm - sounds really cheerful eh? Ah well - to fling ina very geeky quote "Sad is happy for deep people"

Excellent choices! I've never heard of them before. Thanks for sharing!

And since you're probably going to pick up some flying lotus, I highly recommend getting either the Los Angeles album, L.A. EP 1 X 3, or the L.A. EP 3 X 3. Those are very good works of his in my opinion.

And funny how they both remind us of the Ting Tings... which are one of the very few mainstream bands I love! XD

I saw them at Coachella. It was great! TEEHEE!

http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/291564

Good song, that. You could post it on another thread in this section too called "Music by Gadders"; there be more people of listening to et du scah banks.

Excuse me.

ARTIST MENTION 2/3:
Anyways, the other day I was going to go see Venetian Snares and Wisp at a concert in L.A, but couldn't make it because my ride was watching the O Riley Factor. Devastated, I just thought I'd share some of their music here, too.

VENETIAN SNARES:
There's too much to say about him for me to fit into several novels, and most things I think would get me banned from LBPCentral if I dared to bring up.

So long story short, he makes the best breakcore music I've ever heard. And he makes classical, with some jazz, and often blends them all with jungle to give off an interesting vibe. That being said, give these tracks a listen or two. You may find something of your likeness.

1. Hanjal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9beA88_66c

2. Winnipeg as Mandatory Scat Feed [my favorite angry song from him!]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h225x4tOb3E3.

3. Hiszekeny
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIl8zcCIXQU

4. ?ngyilkos Vas?rnap
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QAqJAfBjN8

5. In Quod [Def. my favorite of his! of all time!]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3u_3tdddtg

There are better songs to recommend, but... its the title why I can't.../sniped.

WISP

Once you hear his music, it becomes obvious that he's heavily influenced by AFX. His songs are emotional, and I feel it only truly links to some people, mentally. Of course, that's just me.

If you like AFX or any similar artist to him, I guarantee you'll at least somewhat love his music.

I can't stop listening to Keeper of the Hills.

Yes, an awesome 7/8 beat cover of a cover by Billie Holiday, I think. That album got great reviews, since it was very... epic, I should say XD

And I wouldn't say that people don't connect to certain things on levels; it just comes to how you interpret it.

Man this thread is going nicely! You guys are really starting to dig deep and uprooting some sweet artists I've never listened to before.

Didn' know he was still active
Anyway, nice stuff that WISP-thingy, me likey

cheers,
misty

Wisp has got some really brilliantly crystalline tunes.. Most of which are FREE!

http://www.wisp.kaen.org/

Awesome no? Well apart from his latest 3 albums, I recommend downloading Frozen Days, About things that never were, and his SAWII (aphex twin) remixes...
Apparently Wisp is a huge DnD/rpg nerd, you can kinda tell from some of the tracknames (my heart belongs to an NPC, abyss lich resurrect, ELF MAGIC!, The Bard etc)

Another artist closely related to wisp is Mrs Jynx, since she did a few remixes with him, and has a similar style..
Chocolate Oranges (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw8Xb2Bkq9g)
Ice Pops (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F87G2ooMTNk)
theres a bunch of other tracks from her album on youtube you'll easily find

I've been getting into Plaid only recently too. But I'm finding that I prefer The Black Dog (http://www.theblackdogma.com/tbd/)

Originally, the two members in Plaid were part of the Black Dog, along with Ken Downie. When they broke apart, Plaid took with them their hip-hop influences... while Downie stuck with a more minimal dark techno feel to it.
Plaids first album was called "Not for Threes"
And Black Dog had a song called Dumb and Dumber

its k though, Black Dog have now 3 members again, since the Dust brothers joined. And their last two albums are some of the most solid electronic albums I've ever heard... Radio Scarecrow especially.
I do love their classic stuff too though. Namely their album Spanners.
some new:
Ghost Vexations (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jvy56qO-sc)
You`re Only SQL (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bqMsjOMIz8)
Later Vexations (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bI82PuhQic)

and some old:
Tahr (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcTc5aGvBlQ)
The Crete That Crete Made (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y-M9oECSVA)
Pot Noddle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HALGoI-eDQo)

EDIT: Nevermind; there's still a future for this thread.

ARTIST MENTION 4:

I fear that this thread's final days are nearing an end, so to commemorate I'd like to mention Luke Vibert. He doesn't make music too similar to AFX, but I'd say he's just as inventive and innovative as when mixing/creating different genres and styles of music and such. From what I've come across so far he's a bit more big-beat rather than fast paced.

Here's a cute lil' video of him and Aphex Twin at the place they both grew up in as lads.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ev4pZG26gQ4

You may also know Luke as his alias, Wagon Christ.

NOW THEN onto the music; heres a list of some songs of him I found very addicting. I discovered him quite recently, so I'm putting the videos in the order of how I watched them; the first video being the first I've ever heard from him and so on. Any better suggestions, to those who already be familiar with him?

1. I Love Acid

2. ComfyCozy [IGNORE THE UNOFFICIAL VIDEO]

4. Brain Rave
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blS3xx_BnYg
5. Asheed

Lastly, the ones below me are released under Wagon Christ.

One of my favourite songs from the album...

I amn't too familiar with him either, he's got wayy too many alias's to keep up with... and a lot of mediocre stuff to wade through. But I know most of the tunes Voodoo linked, I like his eccentric swagger style
And that was a pretty slammin track Misty.

I dunno if you guys have heard of this guy The Flashbulb (Benn Jordan (http://www.bennjordan.com/))

Only just started listening to his stuff... but it seems like he's a bit of a prolific genius. He's also got a heap of alias's under different genres from acid to ambient to instrumental. I can't really say whether he's that great or not, I've only listened to 2 or 3 of his albums. But I really really like Soundtrack to a Vacant Life, which is kinda like an instrumental rock album
2nd 3rd and 4th tracks off the album
Kirlian Voyager (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ybpwrgFx7I)
Steel for Pappa + Dirt Bikes And Street Vendors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV1KkxEyBcU)

I'm really digging Deru! He's similar to Flying Lotus, which I realized I haven't mentioned yet... I think. I might make a post of him; you'd like him for his concrete glitch off-timed ear slushy beats as well!

Never heard of him, but he makes very interesting stuff, and that's very good thing in my book

Another artist i would like to mention is Clutchy Hopkins,
he's a multi-instrumentalist who's made some very good albums imho.
He's a bit of a mystery though, as no one seems to know the true identity of the man behind Clutchy Hopkins.
(besides the fact that he's from california)

Apparently it's going to be part of an lP released somewhere in January. Hope that'll give him some attention; he surely seems more deserving. And that epic music video needs to be on MTV, no?

I have loads of rare-ish youtube videos that have underground unpopular songs that are of good sounds that I might post here sometime.

About Flying Lotus, Los Angeles is a good album for you to have; his first album is 1983 is another gem. Looking at his discrography, pretty much everything is a gem...

I'll narrow my personal favorite choices down to the La EP 1 X 3 and the La EP 3 X 3; them be "perfect" EP's. The Reset EP is also a good one; I'd have to go with either of them if I didn't choose 1983.

Speaking of Flying Lotus I may as well jot some of my favorite tracks down...

ARTIST MENTION 5:

I'll skip to it...

1. RobertaFlack [This is one of my favorite songs; out of 3]

2. Rickshaw

I feel kinda guilty posting in this thread two times in a row but I just want to bring up some songs I grew up with that my mom introduced me to [being the underground techno-trance lover she is], which used to play in nightclubs all the time. It pains me listening to these songs; it drowns me in nostalgia and makes me wish things stayed the same. These musicians didn't make many songs [besides Royksopp and The Ones], and were never famous and are now almost completely forgotten [besides Royksopp, lol].

I'm not sure if these songs are too fit for this thread but I'll put them on anyway. Here they are:

Telepopmusik - Breathe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNcZd9BC_78

The Love Bite - Take Your Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pSlRdHiBrs

The Ones - Flawless

Deepest Blue - Is It a Sin

Deepest Blue - Deepest Blue

Actually the audio was muted out and the song was added over it, but it was still cool to watch lol

Also I wanted to just post a couple of random youtube videos of songs that seem nearly forgotten. Or at least, somewhat unpopular at the moment. I guarantee you'll find at least two gems here:

Wow, no posts in 6 days... I feel old.

I posted on this already yesterday, bringing up two more artists I'd discovered recently but for some reason it's not showing up.

So I'll cut right to it...

ARTIST MENTION 6/7: Daedelus and Lemongrass

is it 6/7 yet? or 5/6? Blah, dunno.

If you don't consider Daedelus as one of your favorite electronic music artists in the next five minutes, I'll let you kick my shin.

Daedelus:
1. Sundown
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAAy1XDp1Xw

2. Make It So
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCylb7E0EXY

3. Something Bells
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvjjYBGaPcE

4. Fair Weather Friends
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRJ2YvRv3N4

5. LA Nocturn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYElsvpB8RA

Lemongrass is pretty chill; don't know them too well but haven't come across a song by them that's NOT awesome.

Lemongrass:
1. Bee
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlXl0EwwHQs

2. Ocean Kiss
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrhrVWLuFgw

3. Aloha
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EVzdvu7HN8

4. Bicycles

Their album 'bless you' is a real gem

If you like that, then you probably gonna love Trentemoller aswell,

Dictaphone
I felt in love with this music from the very first second i've heard it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRM4AR90mfs
sadly enough it's the only thing i can find from them on youtube, but if you get a change, listed to their album m-addiction or vertigo II, 2 beautiful albums.

Seeing as only 2 of you post here, i doubt you will like this. But who knows, someone might see it....

This band is called 'Pinkly Smooth' and it was a side project by Brian Haner Jr aka Synyster Gates, and Jimmy Sullivan aka The Rev, both of Avenged Sevenfold. It's wierd and i have no idea what to class it as, so i'll call it Goblin Metal. Because it's strange.
And i only stumbled across this after Jimmy Sullivan died yesterday... And his music sums him up...

Syn plays guitar as normal, The Rev plays piano, drums and does lead vocals...

Mezmer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoNQhKmgVRs

Nosferatu Does A Hefty Dance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEopb6ZHNhY

As i said, i doubt you will like them. But give 'em a listen anyways...

thievery corporation is awesomeness too! my favs are "tarana', "shiva", "hearts a lonely hunter", 'shadows of themselves", and too many more but those are my notable ones!

my favorite album of theirs is "versions". its like the perfect cd to me, but its hard listening to it now without being drowned in nostalgia and questioning my lifes purpose while feeling misanthropic lol

well glad ppl still post XD i thought it was half dead lol

also i kind of feel like a lil cheat posting a link to my music in this thread instead of the other one, but i added some new demos to my music space if anyone would like to see

Owl City are becoming fairly popular, you may have heard this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psuRGfAaju4&feature=rec-fresh+div-r-4-HM

recently, it's #1 in the UK at the moment. However, it's his (it's a one-man-band) old stuff that I like, I'd definitely recommend looking up the album Maybe I'm Dreaming, the first 6 songs are really good, as is the last- the ones inbetween are still good but the others are the cr?me de la...uh...crop.

...Owl City, kinda creepy voice. Sounds like he's got a built in auto-tuner lodged in his throat.

Em, I can think of at least two people here who'd be pretty excited by this news (unless they already know, which is quite likely)

Autechre have a new album coming out on the 22nd March. Oversteps (http://warp.net/records/autechre/new-album-oversteps-announced-plus-european-tour)
can't wait, wonder how far they'll "overstep" the boundaries of music this time.... sorry lame pun.

also The Black Dog have a new one on the way about a month after
Music for Real Airports (http://www.theblackdogma.com/tbd/?p=1283), apparently its a audio visual event as well.

It's white south African hip-hop, mixed up with tons of different culture and sounds... sounds like nothing else, but feels like an evolution of the international hip-hop you would find on an album like "The World According to RZA". Might be what the scene needs to finally gain acceptance in the west.

Dream Theater. In the event you like a combination of classic rock, metal, and symphonic interludes, they're great.

Notable songs include:

The Count of Tuscany, clocking in at around 18 minutes

The Shattered Fortress

Octavarium

Wither

(note, listen to those in reverse from listed. ie, wither first, then octavarium, etc)

Now, going back in time...

Bach's Little Fugue in G Minor.

Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Movement I, and his 9th, movement II.

Mozart's Symphony No. 40., or one of his many piano concertos.

Johann Nepomek Hummel, and his Hummel Trumpet Concerto.

Antonin Dvorak's 9th Symphony: "From the New World".

Pavlova's 4th Symphony, Movement II.

Hmm....what else...

Oh. Styx's Crystal Ball.

Tchaikovsky's 4th and 5th Symphonies.

Wow. That's a lotta music. Easily a few hours.

You guys had better get cracking.

The bands/musicians that've meant the most to me & changed my way of listening to music are fairly mainstream:
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, David Bowie, Miles Davis, James Brown
But a lot of other bands have made an equally big impact on me...
The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Beck, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Pavement... I could go on for a long time...

Anyhow, nowadays I listen to a lot of Them Crooked Vultures, I saw them play live at the 9:30 club in Washington D.C. & they were unbelievable.
I also saw the Pixies in December & the Breeders in October, I think... both great great sets.

Thought I'd give this thread a good ol' bumpin

Autechre's new album Oversteps (http://bleep.com/index.php?releaseid=23072&page=release_details) is out for downloading on Bleep.com
I'm really impressed, its just so nice to stick on and listen to while getting work done. Its in a way more accessible compared to Confield, or Quaristice... but still has that really complex/obscure integrity.
Some weird tracks in there too, like "known(1)" sounds almost psychodelic folktronic-ey...

Have a listen to some of the samples on Bleep, but if you're searching on youtube, beware that there's several FAKE leaked versions of the album going around

Also, just started listening to Ceephax Acid Crew!
Why oh why hadn't I checked it out before???
United Acid Emirates is serious funky acid business..
Ceephax Acid Crew - Commuter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQE0tiTSPSA)
Ceephax Acid Crew - Emotinium II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3TCdwKQcN8)
Ceephax Acid Crew - Prelude In 303 Major (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2kcOCsALnw)

also he's absolutely brilliant live

Thanks for that good 'ole bumping, pittyful
I've had several attempts at posting in this thread recently [doing stuff like putting every single link in these posts into a teaser bar thing in the thread] but my internet freezes and quits itself so I think I'll cover some awesome music I've come across so far.

EDIT: GRRRR me so angries! I posted like 30 links to a bunch of different people after writing some huge paragraphs but when I clicked "Save changes" my computer failed to load the next page, and I lost it all.

When I feel like it, I'll come back and repost the links. They're morely intended for everyone, and I'm sure they'll make you smile and things like that.

Ah don't worry bro, we believe you
Perhaps CTRL+C the whole block of text before posting just incase. Or try a different browser? What are you using, I think Chrome is pretty easy on the CPU. And usually handy for restoring stuff.

I'm really getting into Oversteps. I'm gonna see Autechre play in dublin in April, can't wait... They're playing in the Button Factory, absolutely epic venue, I've seen Squarepusher, Bibio, Clark and Plaid there so far.

when my internet is bad, some pages take several minutes to load, and by the time it did load [it failed] i'd already been copying and pasting other things, so big disappointment, that.

anyways im not up for putting descriptions of the songs i'ma post, so here they are. these following links are from madlib; a really good underground hip hop producer.
Testin Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOZ93UE-Td0&feature=PlayList&p=C60AA9978B242D23&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=9)
Misled (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vZysOaZflI)
Movie Finale (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGJmAd4ogAE)
Indian Hump (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=295fiwMVZQA)
That's the Way it's Gonna Be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88iPtcJexkQ)

Hes very similar to J Dilla. RIP

And here's someone else outside the friendship circle of common underground hip hop. He's Tim Exile. He does good abstract electronic dance music, and some bassy hip hop stuff. Here's his hip hop stuff:
Your Summer Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT2G_QkkobU&feature=related)
Love Line (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NMMo1iBv_g&feature=related)
The Sound is God (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBJPB9A1iHk&feature=related)

While his hip hop stuff is spot on, I'm morely a fan of his experimental drum and bass material. Here's some of that:
Mushroom Santa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN4Wg4gf79A&feature=related)
Rage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT1ZErrpCtQ&feature=related)
Family Galaxy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKHEyUIErEk&feature=related)

I think I've posted that last one somewhere in this thread...

Lastly I want to bring up Dan Deacon again because he's too awesome. I've been really digging his last album. It's like peaceful loving cult music of the future, and has the equal peaceful loving drug influence nature as Bob Marley. Some of his songs take a bit to build up but i highly recommend listening to the whole thing and not skipping. Here are my favorite tunes of his:
Build Voice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWdUewGv49s)
Red F (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTu9y92AN2Q)
Of the Mountains (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRw2o-0c8GA)
Snookered (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeeHGCPCvdM)
Paddling Ghost (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N01aTvi7ef4)

I have a feeling he'll be remembered as a folk icon, like Jonny Appleseed or something.
I mean just look at how involved with the audience he gets; lol. it's like a cult.
