Awesomemans Reviews: 00Sack - Revenge by Vortex2002

Archive: 4 posts

Before we get to the review here, I would like to say that I'm sorry for all of you still waiting for reviews. I've been extremely busy with other games. This has been a huge month with Borderlands, Dragon Age, and MW2. I haven't even started MW2's campaign yet and have only gotten one group, the Dalish Elves, to support my cause in Dragon Age. So yes, pull a Fox News and blame myfaults on video games.

I will be referring to 00Sack - Revenge Part I and Part II as one level. Just wanted to let you all know.

00Sack - Revenge is a two-part pair of levels about an agent who is wandering through the desert after the last level in the series (haven't played it). I set low expectations for this level, as I do all levels with the words "sack", "littlebig", or "lol" in them. And, as I do in all my reviews, I'm eating my words. Revenge is a beautiful, original, and clever level, even if the first part was lacking excitement.

Revenge is, to your eyes, the equivalent of looking golden statues in front of a waterfall with a rainbow during sunset. Well, maybe I'm exaggerating. It's not an Aurongel masterpiece. Revenge looks great, though. The jungle in Part II is lush and detailed while the desert sections in Part I are appropriately bare. The indoor sections in Part II are noticeably better than Part I's. Some material choices were...interesting, but it's nothing that I'm going to complain about. I'm not going to be a nit-picking visuals snob.

Despite what the title may suggest, Revenge is actually more puzzle-based than action-based. The majority of Part I takes place in an expansive building, having you pull levers, drag keys, and more to get to new areas. The second part has a...uh...weird puzzle which involves shipping out barrels. The action in the level is good, though, due to the well designed enemies. I was pretty impressed when a seemingly harmless decoration turned into a blood-thirsty turret. The boss isn't an actual creature. It's more of a "The Bunker" type thing, but it works well and I welcome it against another "move back a layer, move forward a layer, shoot, repeat" boss. The only enemy I didn't like was the one red thing that looked like those things from Ocarina of Time that walked on water.

The only problem that should cause any concern is that Part I has noticeably less action than Part II, or at least the first half of Part I. The platforming is weak and you're pretty much running and grabbing switches. It's not even really a hard puzzle. There's no order you have to activate the switches. Just explore, grab switches, and you're done. Thinking of these two levels as just two halves of a whole level made me change my mind, though. As a whole level, this just makes for excellent pacing.

My favorite thing about Revenge is how it encourages exploration. Most of the areas you'll come across are really open. Part I's puzzle section takes place in a huge building, which is probably full of secrets that I haven't found yet. Revenge is a refreshing balance between linearity and openness. Whereas most levels might just put one or two secret ares filled to the brim with points, Revenge has 10 (I think) of these areas. And it keeps score. I know this isn't new, I've played From Siberia With Love, but I don't think many creators have done it as well as Vortex did.

Overall, 00Sack - Revenge by Vortex2002 is a good level that deserves your time. It has a bit of everything, keeping it from getting tedious as many levels do.

Hey man... thanks for the great review. I appreciate your kind but honest words and I'm glad you enjoyed the experience.

Your opening paragraph paints the picture of a very busy dude, so I won't press this matter - but if you ever have the chance, check out the 1st in this series - 00Sack-Betrayed. I have said many times that I think it's my best work to date, and that these two (while I'm perfectly satisfied with them) do not quite measure up to it.

Thanks again!

I'm not very busy, just wanting to play new games, that's all. And yes, I'll be glad to review the first in the series.
