FreeRice: Saving Lives, One definition at a time.

Archive: 15 posts

Check this out: You can actively combat world hunger by simply finding synonyms.

No joke! This site called FreeRice.com literally rewards you by donating bowls of rice to the UN World Food Program, thus sending the proceeds to poor and hungry people in need. You can donate any time of the day, the definitions provide a progressively harder challenge the more levels you gain (the max is 60; I've only managed to get to 23), and, best of all, it doesn't cost a dime.

So what are you waiting for?: Start saving lives. (http://freerice.com/index.php)

EDIT: Results don't lie. Over 70 BILLION grains of rice have been donated to the UN World Food Program through FreeRice, and each year, have significantly grown. See for yourself! (http://freerice.com/totals.php)

And I do apologize if this seems more like advertising than information. I just feel as though this site is doing something that no other organization has ever done before, and that's solving world hunger.

After a few minutes, I've done 310 grains, and got up to level 35.

Fun and helpful :3

EDIT: made it to 38

EDIT2: Oh cool, you can change the subjects! I've got mine now set to "periodic table (Chemistry: full set)" which is along the lines of "Cobalt= .c. or .co. or .cb. or .cu."

Never having spoken Italian before ever, I decided to try that one. I was encouraged by the first one "il computer". The next one, "puro", was a bit harder, but I got it right by having "pure" as one of the options (score!). La qualita is apparently the quality (who would've guessed?). I made it to level 10 with guess work...2009-11-17 22:46:00

at my school, we have to do 700 questions in the morning. thats 7000 grains of rice per student, multiply by 1500, thats 10 million 5 hundred grains of rice a day. multiply by say, 200 days in school... over 2 billion 1 hundred rice grains a year.

sad thing is, a portion of students do it only ONCE, bookmark the page when they reach 1500, and just open that page up when the teacher passes by to count the scores.

Wow this can get addictive! Got as far as level 51 a few times but don't seem to be able to get any further - the words are just too obscure! I'll have to try a different subject.2009-11-18 11:08:00

shropshirelass, most of the obscure ones can be achieved by either process of elimination or assumed etymology. "Convivial", for instance. I see "vivial" which makes me thing "lively" and "con" which I associate with "with" (as Spanish has adapted it to mean, also like in consequence - with sequence, ie leading to). "With life", then...and there I see it, "jovial" as one of the options - 10 grains!2009-11-18 17:13:00

Haha, yes, complete guesswork helps too as in hmm..."kwacha"..no idea.. I bet it's the Zambian currency! If in doubt always go for the currency option!

I've got to level 55 now but I'm not going anywhere near the maths options, that's for sure.

The hardest of the Pre-algebra maths is like A^8 divided by A^4

A^12
A^32
A^4
A^2

EDIT: I'm trying out World Countries, I've got to level 4 consistently without guessing (darn me getting Suriname and Guyana mixed up V_V)
