White Knight Chronicles

Is anyone else looking forward to this game? I know it's been in Japan for a long, long time... and it's taking them 15 months to get it over here... But still, it's looking awesome from what little i know of it D:

The story itself seems to be rather short (ONLY 30 hours isn't too bad per say...), but it has a rather large online component. I don't understand much, but from what i do understand, you have a bunch of quests you play online in a guild and all that, and you can use all the money you get to build a town and upgrade your character or whatever.

again, I don't know much... but it's looking to be awesome from what info I ahve found, and someone here has to be interested? If so... maybe we can make an LBPC guild when it comes out! Or at least play, or something.

Come on... I know, 15 months and all that... but anyone interested? Comes out in February BTW. I think anyway.

Well, basically, from what I understand...

It is being made by Level 5, who made Dark Clouds 1 and 2 if you know them.

The single player takes up 30 hours. you play as some "avatar" (you make a nameless hero to go along with the actual party cast, but the main hero is some other guy) and that other guy is the main hero. He finds some ancient power known as the White Knight and has to do some stuff to fight the Black Knight or something. Oh, and there's a war and a princess.

It has a very long multiplayer mod though aparrently (all sidequests being multiplayer). From what I understand, there are a bunch of quests you do online with other people. You level up your character with money and equipment you get from grinding in dungeons, and go on to do bigger and better things.

The american version also will come free with a Japanese DLC which allows you to build your own town using the money you got online.

Is that good enough an explanation? Because I literally don't know any more, no one's talking about it (being released here 15 months AFTER over in Japan makes a difference probably >_>)

Well, it'll come out in America February next year (a month before FFXIII, so it'll probably be lost in that rush =C).

and it seems like the raw materials you get in both single player and online can be used through both mods, so that'll be good.

Georama is where you can design your own ?HomeTown?, which serves as a lobby for the online mode. There are 3 different fields to build your Georama in with 18 different combinations. You?ll drop in buildings, infrastructure, and even modify the earth itself. A 2D city sim this is not. Examples were shown where players could make hedge mazes or pixel art in the towns.

What?s cool is you can recruit NPCs from the story mode to come live in your town. The NPCs have jobs of different levels, which will further change the town. Also, you and others can shop in the shops that you create. Up to a dozen players can enter one Georama at once, and from there you can head out questing. Hundreds (or more) parts and elements were shown ? it's pretty deep. Of note: North American players will be able to visit the Georama town of European friends, and vice versa.

The story itself seems to be rather short (ONLY 30 hours isn't too bad per say...).
The main story in Oblivion can easily be completed in less than 20 hours, so if it has enough entertaining side quest it'll be good enough.

I don't think I will buy though now that I have Demon's Souls (which admittedly is very different, but for me it's the same sort of game)

Apparently, all side quests are online with no single player siqe quests (read this months ago and not sure how true it is, but yeah, still ;-;

Apparently the money you get online and offline goes together... And then you buy new things for your town like this video.

Well, literally 10 days left XD

I've been reading some more, and apparently some stuff for your Georama can obtained by doing some quests. That's what I've always wanted- something where you customize a house or, in this case, a town with items you collect by exploring the main thing.

Then of course you set up an "economy" for your town- I was reading , and apparently there are 6 different groups and 3 different classes for each group economy speaking

Farm : glass/flower ,cotton ,mushroom
Lumber : twig ,log ,small insect
Mining : ore, fossil, gemstone
Cook : valley insect, beast, lizard
Warrior : monster insect, giant, dragon
Magician : doll soldier, demon giant, monster plant

You build stuff pertaining to that economy, and then it appears in your stores, which you can access from any savepoint in the main game/ the world map online.

I've been looking for details on a guild/clan system, but no dice

I've also been looking for someone to make a fansite for this, but no dice there either >_> lol ;-;

Anyway, February 2nd will rawk... WKC and Lost Season 6

Oh? What are you saving money for? FF13? :O

Well, within a week you won't be able to do much (the story is like 25- 30 hours from what I hear) online wise... Since online will have a LOT of grinding.

Anyway, for anyone interested... a tip:

Don't beat story, and then do online- at the end of Story you'd be level 25 or 30, but still be guild rank 1, which means the quests you'd do would be for levels 5-10. So try and do both at the same time if you're interested in either.

I'm thinking of just becoming a knight/ sword character... So if anyone would be a mage or a ranger... Yeah.

Yep... Anyway, I hope to play this with you dandy/ whoever else gets this (Astro I know).

Sooooooo yeah.

Actually, I've already got FFXIII pre-ordered. I'm saving money for a trip to California this summer (hopefully).

And if you need a mage to quest with, I can do that. I'm a big fan of magic in video games ('cept in Oblivion...). Also, I've got this pass thing at Blockbuster that lets me keep games I rent for as long as I want, so I'll have it for a bit more than a week.

I will definitely be going Mageblade (like gladiator class in FF Tactics, or Llednar Twem O_O), or probably swordsmen. I dunno. My usual choice of style involves swordsmanship and dark magic (Nobunaga Oda for you Samurai Warriors fans)...so, if I can make that, I'll be midline.

Oh boo hoo. they put the review up 15 hours after online went up. Everything they say is thus null and void.

Besides, "major" review sites have never been good to JRPGS >_>. If you let them tell you what to play... then that is sad.

Well, I'm still in the tutorial, meaning I haven't gotten to the point where you go online- I'm currently at the save point right in the dungeon. The story isn't the best, but meh. Tis fun.

Anyway, as far as gameplay goes, have you played FFXII? It's pretty much just like that. There's a timer, it fills up, you use skills (there's no regular "attack," btw, but you have to get skills like "slash," etc.) and then the timer resets. That's not a bad thing, however. I mean, if you've ever played a FF game that's not I, II, III, or X, you've used the same system already, this one just involves moving the characters about, which makes people think it's supposed to be an "action-based" system. It's an enhanced ATB system.
@the "big, long wait" comment: Play the game before you make judgments on the gameplay.

As far as the story goes, yeah, it's not the best, but it's still enough to be interesting and make me want to play more. Plus, I kinda like cliche fantasy archetypes, and this game is full of them. But the game pulls it off well. Almost as if it's saying "Yeah, it's cliche, but I'm doing it anyway. Why? Because I can." And it sure can.

Thanks for that comment - I may yet buy this game. It seemed to me that some of the 'complaints' in video reviews I've seen are fixable, especially the online stuff (like not connecting with friends easily enough). I can deal with a story not being the best.. It's like movies - just because a movie isn't as spectacular as Avatar doesn't mean I won't like it. The one thing that does seem like it could be annoying is that enemies can attack you from a long distance with short range attacks, and you can't retaliate in the same way. The characters do look like a good PS2 game as far as graphics, but isn't that Level 5's style? I'm thinking Dragon Quest VIII. The complaint about not being able to stay in the White Knight Mode (whatever you call it) seems a bit like a stretch. I see the White Knight as kind of like a Summon from FF, so I don't think it would bother me that you can't stay in that form. Isn't that part of the strategy anyway? Is it completely necessary to go into the White Knight Form for most battles? I would hope not. I originally saw that as being useful for boss battles, and really huge monsters.

The ending worries me though. Although, lots of games today have a less than satisfying ending - Resistance 2, Killzone 2, R&C Future, etc. But still, a 5 out of 10 usually means a game is crap... but could WKC really be that bad? I have my doubts.

My copy is waiting at the front door for when I get home. Maybe I'll take off work tomorrow to play.

Hopefully I'll like it...guess I'll have to give the online a try at some point...seems like a big part of this game. Not really a fan of the headset/talking to people thing. I liked the way online play was done for Demon's Souls.

I've heard that WKC is pretty easy...but I've also heard that you can't do all the online quests solo? I got to HR9 solo in Monster Hunter...I don't mind a challenge or a little grinding. Sure would be nice if it wasn't required that you play online to see everything in the game.

I also like it. I somehow already have 11 hours clocked, but Iunno how that happened so fast. The online components are solid, though everyone sounds really static-y when they use a mic (E.G. ffshshsssshhfffwwwwHey, man, ffffssshhh how's it going?fffssshhhhshhhhffffwwwww) but maybe that's just the guys I've seen have crappy mics. Georama is awesome, but expensive and a big circle. See, if you get more residents, they can do jobs that boost certain stats in your town. These stats affect what building materials your item shop sells. You can use these items to get more things for your Georama so that you can have more residents to get more items to build more stuff, etc. Plus, it costs 6000G to upgrade to level 3, which gives you more room to build with and for Polyn (think of it as the thermo in LBP). I don't have 6k, and if I did, I'd want to use it to buy better weapons. But, still, it's a great game and I'm really glad I bought it.2010-02-06 21:44:00

Yup, game is a lot of fun and I can tell building my town is going to be a big time sink.

The battles are not slow, they go very quickly for being turn based. I think some reviewers thought they were playing an action rpg because you can move around freely. If you are in melee range when an enemy starts it's action you will get hit even if you run away. Same applies to your actions/combos. Moving just determines position and whether you're in range for the NEXT action. If you are looking for an action RPG like Dark Cloud, this may not be for you (I prefer turn-based myself so I'm pretty happy with the battle system).

I also think the game is quite pretty, the desert area reminded me of Rogue Galaxy. The menus are a little cumbersome but they get the job done. My only real complaint is that I've done a couple online quests...and there's WAY too much walking. The collect item phase is a tad boring, the boss fight at the end is the cool part. Hopefully when I unlock new quests they won't follow the same formula.

^I think of the battle system as being very similar to FFXII's, which we all know wasn't really turn-based. Come to think of it, a lot of things in this game are similar to FFXII. (Not(!!!) a bad thing!) This game may have inspired me to give FFXII yet another chance. Hmm...

Anyway, as far as online quests go, they all seem to follow the same basic formula: Start, walk 10 minutes, get a thing, bring it back to the start, boss fight. Though one quest had a "boss fight" midway through and another one had you get two things and the "boss fight" was a swarm of monsters. Easy monsters. (That second one is Rescue the Children. Don't play it solo. You need 3 or 4 people for it. Trust me!)

Anyway, I've already got around 13+ hours in. I've spent so much time online and making my GeoRama it's crazy. My avatar is so over-leveled in the story mode, it's not even funny. (20, compared to 14-ish)

D'you have a keyboard? A lot of people are using those over mics because the mics are really annoying in this for some reason. So, if you've gotta keyboard, then use it.

Dex, have you read this thread at all? Those reviewers didn't give this game a chance at all. Also, don't be a tool, you can't spell ignorance without IGN, etc.2010-02-09 00:03:00

The story is twisty, and the online features is what every RPG gamers dreams of.

Awesome i'll have to quote that some time xD

I'll scan through some more player reviews and think about getting it, just the proffesional reviews were consistently bad. Maybe the review copy was bugged or something

Gaahh just found out it isn't released in Europe until the end of the month, i might as well just get FF13.

There's one certain thing about reviews, a site is either the best site ever or completely ignorant based on if they agree with your expectations for how good the game you want to buy is.2010-02-09 12:27:00

Probably very much the standard story ie. you play as a lowly farmer boy or something like that, somehow end up in the city when the bad guys attack. Before that happens you meet the princess with whom you fall in love. After a short struggle with the bad guys and a glimpse of the big bad guy the princess gets kidnapped so you and your friends immediately set off to find her. 524 dungeons and 12984249 dead monsters later you fight the boss, win and order is restored in the kingdom. You may or may not become king.

PS: There is also quite possibly another female character you meet along the way who falls in love with you.

PPS: There will most likely be a water and a fire based area. Judging by the trailer you can also expect to fight high up in the skies. And a big island will explode.

Depending on which flowers you place at the three spots, you fight a different boss.

Wind Dragon ==> E-6: Scarlet Carnation; G-4: White Carnation; B-3: Red Carnation
Soldiers ==> Yellow Carnation on all
Ahwahnee ==> Any Carnation combo

Now that I've played this quite a bit (GR7) I have to say the game could have been much better with a few simple changes. The single player story was fine, super easy but entertaining...everything else just misses the mark. I'm going to rant about what I didn't like about WKC now...

You can't really build your town without investing hundreds of hours to get the materials to make anything beyond basic stuff. Or you can resort to buying parts with actually money, $1.99 for a single virtual house, no thanks. All the advanced player towns I've visited contained a lot of purchased items. Way to take the fun out the GeoRama Level 5!

The online quests are just lazy and un-fun with a few exceptions. Guess what quest I just unlocked, Memorial Servent II...yes many quests have a 2 version where the monsters have more hp. Most quests involve running back and forth ignoring the small monsters, there's no reason to fight them.

Raising your Guild Rank is a horrible grind...and it's an artifical restriction that limits the armor/weapons you can equip as well as being able to upgrade your town. The only way to get guild points is from the online quests...you can do them solo, but you can't even bring the story characters along. Ask anyone with a high GR ranks how many times they've done "big red".

I usually don't mind grinding, Monster Hunter is one of my favorite games and all it is is grinding, the difference is that in WKC you spend more time running to the boss than actually fighting it!

That said, I'm still mostly glad I got the game, I had some fun with it and may still play more. With better online quests, greatly reduced GR and georama requirements it could have been a game worth spending a lot of time with. If your on the fence about this game probably best to skip it...hopefully that other little RPG out next month won't dissappoint.

Ok, I still don't have this game, but as most of you would agree, I thought the reviews were very harsh. Well, when it comes to trusting "official" reviews, there is only one site that I trust - www.psxextreme.com. They finally came out with a WKC review (http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-reviews/342.html) a few days ago, and I think it's more on par with what everyone in this thread has been saying. For those of you who don't want to read it, they gave it an 8.5 out of 10 and said it's a solid RPG that shouldn't be missed by fans of this genre.2010-02-17 18:16:00

Clearly an 8.5/10 is trying to compensate for the 5.1/10...I think a 7/10 is a more accurate/fair score. Really the main problem with this game is the extremely repetitive grinding necessary to do anything...your rewards are few and far between. The GR7 online quests are actually pretty entertaining, you have to start really coordinating as a group to get through them and get S rank with dedicated healer/tank/damage dealer, etc. I assume it gets even better for GR8+.

The trouble is that many people will give up long before reaching the high GR ranks because it involves the un-fun process of doing the same few low level quest HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of times! I know I plan to quit when I hit GR8. I'm also totally annoyed with the Georama because I would love to build my town but it's such a chore grinding for GR rank, gold, and the upgrade materials. It's a fun game but the fun is dilluted by too much unnecessary grinding. At some point all but the most dedicated will reach a spot where they say, "I need how much for the next level?!? Are you kidding, I'm done!"

Hey Rock, how are you enjoying the game? What GR are you now?
