Welcome To The Hunt (5000 XP and DLC up for grabs!)

Archive: 53 posts

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/5979/34043758.png

As some may have noticed, I?m becoming progressively less active on the forums as time goes on. I originally thought I?d be able to stay active and helpful here while balancing college, life, and work, but I guess it just wasn?t meant to be. I know that ?good-bye? threads generally aren?t allowed, but that is only part of it.

I had originally planned to have a massive contest when I reached 10,000 XP, but I?m only about half way there, so I guess I?ll just have to settle for a 5,000 XP contest. The contest is going to remind most of you of Dawes? mystery word hunts, because that?s basically what it is. I have been planning this for quite a while, long enough that I've programmed an application to track your progress as you make your way through the stages. And with that quick intro, I?ll move onto the proverbial meat of the contest.

Please read the entire post to ensure there is no confusion.

Objective:
Be the first to locate the hidden word and send it to me via Private Message.

Rules/Guidelines/Overview:

1. YOU MAY ONLY SEND ME ONE ANSWER VIA PM, DO NOT WASTE IT.

2. I am going to give absolutely no clues throughout this. I have designed everything so that it is solvable with a little bit of determination and ingenuity. The only reason I will divulge any information is if a clue ?malfunctions? or otherwise blocks progress.

3. This will be my only post in this thread related to the contest. I?ll be active in the chat client for the duration of the contest. I?ll try my best to answer any questions not specifically related to clues or The Hunt itself.

4. Unlike Dawes? contests, there will be no points given for helpful hints or discoveries, and all 5000 XP will be given to the first person who PMs me with the correct answer and has not already guessed. The XP can be used for whatever purposes they see fit.

5. Everything in this challenge can be completed with free or standard software on a Windows computer. Tools found on the internet might also be helpful, but their use is at the player?s discretion.

6. Parts of this challenge may require you to be technically or mathematically savvy and have some general knowledge, but nothing too extreme. Also, if you do not have time or patience to devote to this, I don't suggest you enter.

7. I do not expect anyone to solve this within the first hour, or possibly even the first few. I tried to eliminate tedium, but some parts will require time and manual translation to solve.

8. This post contains no information that will lead you to clues, though it may be important at some point during this hunt.

9. There are no restrictions on what you may post in this thread beyond normal LBPC Rules, though because there is no benefit from sharing information and clues, I don't recommend posting your findings here or discussing them with others. I view this as more of an individual effort than a team sport.

10. You will not find any clues on this website; all clues and information will be found through the application.

11. As a bonus, I will purchase the winner any Playstation Network DLC they choose via Amazon.com valued at or under $5.99 and send them the code via PM. The DLC is US only. The region restriction is not my choice, but policy of the Playstation Network and Amazon.com.

Program Information:

1. The application can be downloaded via the link at the bottom. I have designed it from scratch, it is mandatory for completing this challenge, and hopefully by now I?m known well enough that everyone will understand that there is nothing malicious in the code, but if you have any doubts, scan it in a antivirus software of your choice.

2. The application will only work a computer running Windows.

3. The application will not work until it is activated by a command from me at 6:00 PM EST on Friday, November 13th, though it can be downloaded now.

4. You will not get a head start by downloading it now, because until I activate it, the only thing it will allow you to do is chat with others who have the program opened.

5. Sign into the application using your forum name or PSN name. If you sign in under something else, I will first ask you to exit out and change it. If you choose not to listen, I will permanently ban you.

6. The way banning works in this application is that an MD5 hash of your MAC Address is stored in my server application. That way, no matter what name you sign in under or even if you change your IP address, the application will immediately close upon signing in.

7. Don?t try opening up the application with more than one instance at a time, it won?t work.

8. The program works progressively, while someone may give you information that is vital to The Hunt, it is effectively useless unless you are already at that stage in the contest.

9. Windows will most likely warn you about running the application. It does need to connect to the server, which will be running on my computer for the duration of the contest. The program downloads nothing to your computer, and uploads no information to me other than information you input, and an encrypted (MD5 Hash) version of your MAC Address if I need to ban you, which I hopefully won?t.

10. To input your answer, click the logo that reads ?The Hunt? at the top of the application. There is no penalty for guessing wrong here, input your answers into the ?Answer Box?.

11. All answers are case sensitive.

I don't want to toot my own horn here, but I think I've made a pretty robust application. It features a chat client so that all participants can discuss the contest if they so choose, as well as a basic leader board which will tell you who the three furthest players are. I will be active in the chat for as much of the contest as possible.

And with that, I will leave you with a link to the application and some time to read over the information and rules I have laid before you.

Good Luck (http://www.mediafire.com/?jktjmnt0m45)

Dawes wins!

Walkthrough:

1. The picture given by the program says "The Hunt". In off-black text is the hint "Dig Deeper". Opening the picture up in notepad yields the hint Progression.

2. Inputing Progression brings you to the next step. This picture is of the carnival ride, The Zipper. An inverted clue on the picture reads "What happens when you unzip the zipper?" In the bottom left corner of the picture, "rar" is hidden. Changing the file extension from jpg to rar and then using 7-zip to extract it yields the hint Omnipotence.

3. Inputing Omnipotence brings you to the next step. The program gives you the clue to "Square the first, add in the second, and subtract the third." The picture is 6 colored blocks. If you square the red value, add the green value, and subtract the blue value from each block, the numbers you get translate over to ASCII. The answer is Wealth.

4. Inputing Wealth gives you a hint to a level on LittleBigPlanet. The combination to the lock is followed by "-Right One", which meant to translate the whole combination one key over. Doing so yields Epiphany.

5. This one was a doozy. Several hints lead to the periodic table of elements, and the first set of numbers were the atomic numbers of elements. Arranging them in the order given by the second set of numbers and translating that two letters up (as per a clue in the program) yields the answer RaDIANcE.

6. I messed up a bit here. The clue asked the player to find both sides of society with all of the information I'd given. The 5 previous answers spelled out POWER if you took the first letters of each. The second part was supposed to spell out CHOICE with the file names for the clues, but I forgot the second C and it spelled CHOIE, so I've changed the program so it makes sense now.

7. Inputing both POWER and CHOICE leads to the final clue, which is headed with R:W:L, which stands for Rule:Word:Letter, as hinted at in rule 8 of the instructions. Following that format, you'd get the final answer: Ascendancy.

It's not necessarily hard, I provided more than enough hints so that it didn't devolve into guesswork, but it will involve a little bit of lateral thinking.

That's too bad. If the appointment isn't too long, I'd suggest trying it out just for fun. If you are the kind of person who likes puzzles, you'll thoroughly enjoy this. Also, if someone gets the first few clues right, then gets hung up on another clue, you'll have a good chance to catch up.

Sorry about you leabing though. It's sad that we lose some and gains some... but the ones we lose are the ones we love. (P.S. I think I went little poetic there, didn't I?)

Since RockSauron asked so nicely, I've changed rule number 11 to include all DLC. It still falls within the region restriction, and it's limited to everything on Amazon.com

That's too bad, I figured a Friday afternoon would allow the most people to do it. If you want, I can leave the server running a couple extra days so you can attempt to complete it after, just for the challenge and fun of it.

30 minute warning.

In half an hour, the application will go live, and the contest will begin.

Note: I updated the application about 10 minutes ago, it now flashes in the taskbar when someone says something in the chat.

Bsprague: Thank You for your time on this I enjoyed the Hunt even if I failed to finish. Ya Know... I was entering 'Progression' at 6:04 pm. And I do mean 'entering'. No wonder the ****dable application was doing nothing...

I look forward to the walkthrough as I spent more time staring at the Periodics Table than in 8th grade science...

Assuming the first few numbers are the atomic numbers of the elements i've tried the same combination 2 boxes above the original, 2 boxes below, i've added and subtracted 2 from the atomic number, i've moved the group numbers around in relation to the (1st2nd3rd) thing... none of those got any results :/2009-11-15 22:46:00

OK, well, I'll tell you this - it is a combination of the moving around 1st2nd3rd, the periodic table, and the list of atomic numbers. Weird how it's going so haywire for you, after all those combinations I'm sure you'd've got it O_O2009-11-15 23:11:00

Yeah, I downloaded RDKF off a US account when it was free and it works fine on my UK PS3.

--

So we had to use RAR for the second clue :S
I changed it to a ZIP because it said unzip. If it's a RAR then it's technically unraring the zipper

True, but I did put "rar" in the bottom left corner, so it wasn't as if you had to guess. Also, simply having to unzip it would be too easy.
