Trophies. Who needs them!?

Archive: 33 posts

It seems like more and more people are bragging about trophies and even them making them their sigs on this website. Well I have one thing to say.

WHO NEEDS TROPHIES!?

It's one thing to set goals for yourself, but trophy grubbing is another thing. Some people have told me that trophies are to prove you're not a noob. The only thing trophies seem to prove to me is you are crazy enough to spend hours in letting game companies get the better of you.

Trophies have caused one of lbp's biggest problems, h4h. Why are people so obsessed with trophies?

Games these days are putting less and less effort into material, and more and more effort into trophies. They realise that if they put more trophies into games and add-on's, people will spend more money and play games longer.

I have no hard feelings against people who put lots of time into trophies, and I know not everybody is a trophy-grubbing h4her, but still. Why? Why spend hours trying to get a one-in-a-thousand achievement or accomplish an impossible task when you know you're not having fun?

I agree with you. Trophies really don't make a difference in your life besides providing some kind of weak emotional support, now do they?

On a serious note, I don't mind that people try to achieve trophies but their methods are rather annoying. Believe it or not, Many trophy-crazed people are ruining games for others. This really bothers me more than anything else.

WHO NEEDS TROPHIES!?

This annoying guy on my friends list who's 50th platinum trophy was for Hannah Montana the movie game.

My friend in real life seems to think they're important. He brags that he's one level higher than me. Big deal. I've been playing pretty much only LBP for the past 4-5 months. He rents a new game every few weeks. (Though, I did find the time to play Rag Doll Kung Fu enough to get 100% trophies.)

ARG! Klaww you hit it spot on! I hate when people brag about having so many trophies/higher levels! It's so annoying

Now I know this isn't part of the deal, but Incinerator22 is just so handsome! And finally someone made this thread xD

(I was held at gunpoint to say that last bit)

i like trophies in the sence that it shows how far you've come but i think your a total loser if you TRY to speed up the process and start grubbing for them and then holding yourself above people because you have a dumb virtual trophy, HELLO its not worth your dignity!2009-11-11 01:55:00

Yeah, I used to be a mod at a trophy site, so I kinda know what it's like- the fact that everyone there was horrible made my just decide "this place sucks" and leave like that XD <_>

But yeah, I DO like to collect trophies, because hey, it's fun- you can't tell me it's not fun.

however, when people brag about collecting trophies despite having tons of cheap, easy horrible games that only sell at all because it has ridiculously easy trophies, THEN there would be a problem.

However, don't tell me that H4H is caused by the Create Trophy- H4H would have existed regardless of it. People like useless statistics, so they'd want to boost hearts with or without trophies.

So yeah... I like collecting trophies and stuff, but some people take it to the extreme. I wouldn't say it's ruining gaming persay, since they aren't completely changing gaming... but I can see some things having changed because of achievements and trophies, sooooo... yeah.

I love trophies, they give me a challenge outside of the normal objectives. I hate people who buy dumb games with easy trophies because what does that say to developers?2009-11-11 06:35:00

They're just a nice extra, you get what you want and leave those that you don't think are worth the time/effort.2009-11-11 12:06:00

Holy cow everyone! My "Friend's" 62nd platinum trophy was for Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs! OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!

We should all bow to his feet!!

Right now he's squeezing MW2 dry.

And I met him through LBP, he was a H4Her.

He was cool at the time.

To me, they add a lot of replay value and potentially competition. I enjoyed racing my friends to see who could get all of the trophies in Rag Doll Kung Fu first, and some people like the competition on a global scale. If trophies are incorporated well, they can be fun to collect and rewarding as well. Jumping into Create Mode back in October and trying to get the Sackbird trophy with a couple of my friends was hilarious to say the least.2009-11-11 22:16:00

Trophies can be good or bad.

The good ones add something to the game, giving the player more of an incentive to complete objectives in a game away from the main storyline.
"Complete all the sidequests", "Complete ~~ in 2 hours", "Deal 1000k damage" etc.

Some of them might be a complete chore or almost impossible but they're still worth the bragging rights if anyone actually bothers with them
They add replayability and a lot more playtime too, even if you've 100%'d a game you might have a few really difficult trophies to work towards!

Then you have the bad trophies though which form the majority.
These are really easy ones that are completed DURING the main storyline like "Complete level 1" or "Deal 5 damage".
They're just a waste of space really and some game devs see this as a free tickets out of some things which is really bad.
With a lot of games the real sense of accomplishment that should of been in the game to begin with has been reduced to "You have achieved a trophy!".

I think it's evident that some trophies don't work well with online features too, LBP has been plagued by H4Hers because of it.

While they do annoy me because its stuff I'm going to do anyway they do provide an insight to how far people get in a game before giving up for whatever reason.

Games are too easy these days for people to care about how far their friends got into a game

I'm not against trophies like "Complete Med/Hard/Insane" because they show which difficulty someone could manage, but chances are everyone can complete at least one difficulty.

Personally I love getting trophies. Although I never like to brag about them. I just get them for the fun of it, and to see if can get all of them in every game I've got (which I haven't quite managed).

The thing I like most about them is how much replayability they give. With WipEout HD, for example, I wouldn't have played that half as much as I did if I wasn't determined to do everything to get the platinum. Before trophies game I would very rarely ever want to go back and complete games on harder difficulties because there was nothing to show for it. I wouldn't bother trying to beat Uncharted on Crushing if there was no trophy for it. But because it is there, I get more out of the game, because it gives me a reason to want to keep playing and playing in ways I might not usually play.

Just thought i'd add to what i said earlier, progress trophies aren't that annoying if the game isn't very deep and there's nothing else that could of been added

It gets annoying when they replace trophies that would of been much better.

In the new R&C for example there's like 10 progress trophies and tons of other things that they left out.
The hardest difficulty has no trophy, there's things like fully upgrading the weapons, collecting all the schematics.

Instead we have "You completed Krell Canyon!"

Well trophies are fun, they do have a "negative" side to them. They basically have no meaning except that you accomplished something. Though they do give you a minute of glory, just like any old trophy, they sit there, getting dust while you go "Why did I obssess for that?". So, the verdict:

Verdict
Trophies are great for those who have no other need for a game after beating it. But friends or anonymous people who brag about them are either phsycos or very lonely people. So the thing I would like to see is Sony giving discounts or free games from the PSN Store when you get a certain amount of said trophies. After all, if you get a free copy of a Modern Warfare 2 map pack, and your friend had to buy it, you can say "HA! Take your trophies and shove them up your ***!"

Peace

The hardest difficulty has no trophy

So do you want to complete it on hard mode?

Yes? Then go do it. Awesome.

No? Well, why would it matter if there isn't a trophy to encourage something you don't actually wanna do.

I don't really see how you lose out.... but, that said:

I don't care either way about trophies. I do like stats, so the ones that are vaguely stats related pop up on my screen, but that's about it. If I complete a game on hard, I know I've completed that game on hard. I'm not a complete moron and I'm actually aware of things that happen around me. A trophy or achievement or a computerised telling me I've done well won't change that

I'm pretty oblivious to the whole trophies thing though, it's had not real impact, positive or negative, on me so I'm pretty happy for things to continue as they are.

If i played it on the hardest difficulty it'd have to be on like the 4th playthrough of the game.
It's not exactly something that i'd jump at the chance to do so the trophy just acts as an extra incentive - I tend to see trophies as excuses to play a game more

Most games don't really reward you for a lot of the harder/more obscure objectives, if i completed the hardest difficulty or did something like reaching some insane level in Disgaea i'd get no recognition for it other than a save file.

For me the trophy isn't really for bragging rights, it's just nice to have some sort of external reward that you can look back at.

I don't need them, but I do like some of the goal oriented things they tie into regarding LBP. Like completing the Story Levels or collecting all the objects and the like. I've not been one to worry about all of them, but I did smile when I have achieved a few of them. Sort of a "Oh wow.. really? Cool!" when they pop up.2009-11-12 05:25:00

I think they bring in some self-competitive behavior. All the years I was in school, college included, I had to get 100%. I would actually get mad that I got a B instead of an A because I felt like I didn't do my absolute best. For me, seeing the 100%, which I don't have on any game yet, is just like that for me. Sort of like my Playstation saying "Good job, here's a sticker and a smiley!"2009-11-12 14:07:00

There's no real reward playing ANY games outside you having fun actually playing a videogame...

That doesn't have to do with the point of getting all hyped up over a trophy.

Nothing really fun about it.

Maybe not for you, but I at least enjoy getting trophies. I can still have fun with a game without trophies (look how long I've been playing LBP for after getting platinum), but there's something about hunting down those last few trophies in a game that I find really enjoyable.
