Ropes' physics

Helloo ~

I'm currently trying to make a level, which is going pretty well.
But the core of the level is not working. For ones, I have got the scenery right, but the actual gaming is not.

What my problem is: I have a platform, a platform hanging in ropes, and a platform more. The player have to jump from Platform 1, then to the Rope platform, and then lastly to the last platform.
But I don't want the player to have it easy. So he needs to be patient, and move back and forth on the platform, so that it will finally be swinging enough*, for him/her to be able to leap onto the last platform.

I have made it work a little, but it doesn't swing far enough. So I tried attaching it to some different things, in order for it to work:

# A block of glass, as wide as the platform, that slides on a piece of dark dark.

# A piece of cardboard with 2 weels (attached to a thin layer behind, with normal bolts).

# Putting the ropes closer to each other.

# Using only one rope (It's to wiggly and wobbly for the player to be able to be on the platform).

So if you have any ideas on how to make the platform swing far enough, please share it! And no, I'm not gonna move the platforms closer..
One last detail: There is a wall on each side, once the player jumps onto the platform, and the walls will first disappear when it gets close enough to the magnetic switch on one of the platforms.

And I will not change this idea. I will not make it so that the player needs to swing in a rope, as this would not be the same thing, and it would be to easy to make. I need challenges once in a while, as my psychiatrist tells me :b... She doesn't say though, that I can't ask other to help me with them..

If a little computer-made drawing of how the contraption works is neccesary for you to answer the question, I will make one by request!

It seems you've tryed most of the things already, the only thing I can suggest is using very light materials and put the strength of the ropes or chains very low... hope you can do something with this 2009-11-10 20:09:00

Well, I haven't tried with chains (which are just winches, with no difference in Min and Max lenght, right?), so I'll try that. But using, let's say cardboard, for this, would completley ruin the theme of the small level, so I'll definetley not do that. I'd rather delete a level, than make it random, or put a flower inside a dungeon (unless it affects the storyline somehow...).

I'll just wait for some more answers for now, as I can't really do anything with it today (my parents don't want me to use the TV anymore for today.. )
I'll write'em down though!

Make the ropes longer? Should allow you swing it further.2009-11-10 20:12:00

It would make the jump to the platform alot easier but.. I suppose I'll try this.

Hang on a minute... Why would the initial jump be easier?

The ropes connected to the platform are connected to the roof right? Well just move the roof up so that the ropes are longer. The initial point of the middle platform will be the same, so the first jump will be just as hard.

Right? What did I miss?

you can just sticker the cardboard with a stone material picture if you want to stay to the theme 2009-11-11 07:13:00
