http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff297/Burnvictim42/LBP/gickrcom_73dfc475-b458-9ac4-8d95-9d.gif Thanks to Burnvictim42 for the banner NOTE THAT THIS IS AN ACTIVE PROJECT. START CONTRIBUTING NOW!!! Alright, first of all, two things: a) I talked about this on the last live SackCast for anyone who was there b) This was inspired by Outlaw-Jack's awesome little 'company' that he started to make vehicles in LBP. Please read what's in the spoiler tags if this is your first time reading this, and you don't know what this is about. This project is something anyone with decent creation abilities can contribute to! It's a lot of text to read at first, but I think you'll find it an interesting idea, and likely something you can help with as well as benefit from! Anyways, lets get right to things, shall we? What is The Community Palette? The Community Palette is the future of level creation for amateurs. It is the solution for those people who want to create, but feel like they don't have the time to spend, or the artistic ability. It is a collection of high quality, themed objects that can be easily accessed and used by anyone and everyone. And these objects are created by YOU. Essentially, anyone will be able to access these objects in LBP, organized by theme, and collect them. They can now use these objects to create their own levels, whereas they otherwise might not have the time to, or the skill. Think of it this way: Imagine you have all the different platforms and hazards available to you from all the mario 64 levels. Now, you can make your own mario level by using the objects you have available to you and arranging them in your own unique way to create a platforming adventure that, while similar to the other mario levels out there already, is still unique and fun - as you've used these objects in your own ways. Furthermore, as the Palette of objects grows, it gives more power to these 'amateur' creators, allowing more possibilities for originality in how the objects are used. If you know what Game Maker is, think of it as the Game Maker of LittleBigPlanet. It makes the complicated, time-consuming, and difficult act of creating a great level accessible to the average player. This doesn't mean that there's no point in creating your own level from scratch - there's only so far you can get this way, rather than getting into the advanced nitty-gritty of things. Just like there's only so far you can get with Game Maker until you need to switch to C++. Also, it's important to note that with the impending (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=18359) release of leerdamer, we'll soon have lots more profile space to hold these objects. Why should I be contributing? There are several reasons to contribute: 1) Because you love creating. 2) Because you want to give power to the community 3) By enabling more people in the community to create levels, in turn, more fun levels will be made for you to play. Can anyone contribute? As much as I'd like to say yes, it is important that every object is of high quality. Whether it's a chair, an interestingly shaped block, or a mech walker, it needs to be reliable, sturdy, and graphically pleasing. What we're aiming for is to have the best quality of objects, so that even though people aren't necessarily putting as much of their own creativity into their level because they don't have the skill or time to, they can still create top notch levels that people will enjoy playing, and they can enjoy creating. When you first submit an object to be added to the Palette, someone will review it to ensure that it meets the standards. If it is decided that it does not meet the standards, don't feel bad - just because we don't accept an object into the Palette doesn't mean it's not awesome. After you've submitted several objects that have been accepted, your objects probably won't be screened anymore, and you'll just say "here's a new one!" and we'll be like "awesome! It's in!". What is a Palette? Dictionary.com: a thin and usually oval or oblong board or tablet with a thumb hole at one end, used by painters for holding and mixing colors. So on this palette there are themes - the colours - each of which consist of their own sets of objects. So: Palette ---> Themes ---> Set For now the palette will be in a level, where you can browse the different themes and collect all the different objects. As the palette grows a new PSN might be created, with an individual level for every few themes. What should I be making to contribute? There are going to be several themes, and you can make any object that fits that theme. However, if you have a suggestion for a new theme, feel free to suggest it. There will probably be lots of interesting themes that we don't think of, and the themes don't need to be so generic either. If you are very creative, and have this very unique, abstract, theme, suggest it along with an example object to help describe the theme. Also, feel free to create your own set, completely by yourself. And finally, feel free to submit objects that you've already made if they fit one of the themes or if you have enough to create your own theme. Where will the level(s) with the Palette be stored? Right now the only place I could really put them is on my own PSN. But if someone wants to be my co-president (see bottom) then frankly I'd rather get it off my chest and onto theirs! Also, like I said at some point everything may be transferred to a new, dedicated PSN if there's a strong response to this project. I by no means want to take credit for something you've made, and so wherever the Palette is stored, each object will have next to it the credits of the contributor. The Community Palette General Themes Blocks and Shapes 2 Complex blocks and shapes of any colour or design (i.e. spirals, waves, etc.) Buildings (background) Buildings on one thin layer, for example a background cityscape or farm. Buildings Thick layer buildings either as an obstacle that cannot be entered, or as an enterable building (or both!). Household Appliances/Furniture i.e. chair, sink, lamp Nature i.e. trees, grass, etc. Platforms Any kind of platform that can be used to get from point A to point B - from spinning platforms with electricity on one side, to complex contraptions. Vehicles From motorcycles to submarines to helicopters. Custom Themes Consisting of objects made by a specific person/group of people. To submit an object: The best way I can think of is to simply take a picture of it, provide a little description, and post in this thread. To take a picture in LBP: - open your popit - take the picture - press square on the picture that you took, select 'upload to HDD' - transfer it from your Hard drive to a USB key - upload it to a website like photobucket or imageshack - paste the link to the image here and put image tags around it Jobs: President(s): hilightnotes (me) Quality Testers: Burnvictim42 (part time - don't worry, I'm not holding ya to any commitments Burnvictim) Available jobs: - Co-president: because I'm super busy and need someone else who can run this in the event that I don't have time. - Quality Assurance: to assure quality I think that's about it. I'm sure there's lots of great themes I haven't thought of. Feel free to suggest! And feel free to take initiative and get creative with your own original new themes. Also, if you have any criticism on this idea/ways to improve it, let them loose Finally, remember: even a simple object is appreciated. | 2009-11-10 01:17:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
(extra space that I'll probably need at some point!) | 2009-11-10 02:03:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
So... if i get this correct, you're making a group of people to help make prefabricated scenery objects? Such as a level filled with Natural scenery, etc? Nice idea. I've made 2 levels with similar thoughts (trees, and doors), feel free to use them for your compilation. | 2009-11-10 02:22:00 Author: Burnvictim42 Posts: 3322 |
Yeah, basically. But I'm not trying to gather a specific group of people that will be the 'team'. I'm inviting anyone to contribute - however, the objects will be screened before being added to the Palette, so that everything is top notch. Sure! I myself am EXTREMELY busy at this time - I really shouldn't have even taken the time out to start this, but I really wanted to get this going - but I'll try to take a look, or if I don't, hopefully I'll have a 'co-president' and 'quality assurance testers' soon who can do all the work (and, yes, take most of the credit for running the project ) ... Burn, if you want to be co-president let me know! Also, I'm open to Quality Assurance Tester applications! By the way, I updated the initial description to make it a little more clear hopefully. | 2009-11-10 02:22:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
~_^... interesting idea, hilight . I wish you the best of luck with your company, and may you achieve something gr8. But, here's a warning: If you steal ANY of my vehicles without my permission, you're dead. :kz: BTW, once you get up & running, care for a partnership? | 2009-11-10 04:45:00 Author: Outlaw-Jack Posts: 5757 |
co president please! | 2009-11-10 07:21:00 Author: Kern Posts: 5078 |
Wow, this sounds pretty cool. If you need me to "break" anything, you know I'm your man hilight. I am thinking about submitting some objects, but I have no idea where to start >.< ...LOGIC GATES?!?!?! Ah well, I'll see what I can come up with. | 2009-11-10 15:49:00 Author: goldenclaw13 Posts: 224 |
you say 1 thin layer, does that include the 3d layer glitch? | 2009-11-10 17:23:00 Author: Kern Posts: 5078 |
~_^... interesting idea, hilight . I wish you the best of luck with your company, and may you achieve something gr8. But, here's a warning: If you steal ANY of my vehicles without my permission, you're dead. :kz: BTW, once you get up & running, care for a partnership? Haha, I said at the top 'inspired by Jackofcourse' Don't worry, I won't steal any of your vehicles without permission! And it's active as soon as people start contributing to it, so partnership sounds awesome! Should I be adding your 'Flyers' as a custom theme? you say 1 thin layer, does that include the 3d layer glitch? Yeh, layer glitch is fine as long as a player doesn't need to know any weird glitch techniques to get it to work - in other words, the saved object must automatically go to the back layers. Goldenclaw, I trust your opinion on how sturdy an object is 100%, so if someone sends in a contraption feel free to test if it works and I can add you as a QA guy. However, in general I suspect many objects won't have mechanisms, for example the 'complex' shapes and buildings are more decorations. So to QA that, I need someone with an artistic eye who can see if a) it looks good, and b) it fits the theme. Not to say you don't have an artistic eye, but I don't know. But yeh, like I said, feel free to test any mechanical devices that hopefully will be submitted at some point, and I can add you to the QA! Also, Burvictim42 kindly made an awesome little banner for the project, that you can now see! Thanks! EDIT: I also just want to point out that you don't have to be an expert creator to contribute to this. As much as I talked about QA and how the objects need to be of high quality, if you're reasonably artistic you can easily make something for the 'complex shapes' or 'buildings' themes. I also added a new theme "household appliances". Remember, you guys can suggest themes too. I'm sure there's lots more that I haven't thought of. | 2009-11-10 22:33:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
I'll try to think of something to provide! | 2009-11-11 01:11:00 Author: piggabling Posts: 2979 |
Very well, I think you may get a new theme. I just need to work on some logic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic). | 2009-11-11 14:25:00 Author: Chamion B Posts: 124 |
You might want to wait on logic, based on that new announcement from MM. | 2009-11-11 19:36:00 Author: Burnvictim42 Posts: 3322 |
Why don't you allow me to be a work-at-will, part time employee. That sounds like my sort of position! And by the way, what do you want us to do with the made object? Should we just take a picture and hold onto it until you need it or have a place for it? | 2009-11-11 20:57:00 Author: piggabling Posts: 2979 |
Everyone is an employee Like I said, you don't need to ask to contribute, you just need to understand it's POSSIBLE that we won't accept an item. So yeh, work-at-will part time employee sounds good! And yes, take a picture of the object and post it here, and I'll take a quick glance, and assuming it meets a high standard of visual presentation, then it can be added to the Palette. If it involves mechanics, I or someone else will test it after that point to double-check it works properly. So when your object is accepted, you just say where it can be found. I, or someone who I've 'hired' will go and pick it up and add it to the 'Palette' level so that you can get it from that level after reading a thanks and credit to whoever that object was made by. At the moment there is no Palette level because there have been no submissions yet and because I am extremely busy at the moment. But still, please, start contributing! What I'll probably do is try to take a look at any contributions now, and have them lined up for when we launch the actual Palette in LBP. And when will that be? I'm thinking I'll probably try to get it to coincide approximately with Leerdamer, since we'll need that extra profile space anyways to store all those objects. So once Leerdamer is announced (and supposedly it's the next patch coming), I'll close in on the actual level's launch date. | 2009-11-12 04:00:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
Can i be vice president! | 2009-11-12 07:44:00 Author: Kern Posts: 5078 |
Can i be vice president! I suppose so Do you feel like checking out the 'leads' we have currently to test the QA? (such as Burnvictim's, although I'm pretty confident his stuff is great!) | 2009-11-16 02:27:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
ah little problem at the moment A. I have mocks all this week, B. Ive had my controllers took off me | 2009-11-16 18:55:00 Author: Kern Posts: 5078 |
Haha okay well if you get more time let me know. I myself am struggling for time (still haven't edited the latest SackCast podcast after two weeks :S) so like I said I'd be more than happy if someone wanted to take over this project for the most part, as long as they are capable. | 2009-11-16 23:17:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |

Just a suggestion for us who dont like to mess around with transfering files with a flashdrive. This sounds like an awesome idea, but if it becomes too sucessful some items may become as generic as pre-built MM items  JK | 2009-11-20 22:01:00 Author: King_Tubb Posts: 435 |
I will be happy to join but... Why do we have to post the picture on to photobucket or otherwise? Cant you just post it here? | 2009-11-21 23:45:00 Author: bob is named bob Posts: 64 |
I will be happy to join but... Why do we have to post the picture on to photobucket or otherwise? Cant you just post it here? yep, but to post it here the easiest way (at least for me) is to upload it to photobucket or the likes. But if there's another way you like better that's fine too | 2009-11-24 23:00:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
So it's like the Wikipedia of LBP, but instead of getting information, you're getting items. And it's not like "GET FREE ITEMZ ZOMG!" level because in those you get items made by other creators and placed in a free items level without their knowledge. | 2009-12-14 20:46:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |
First of all, thanks for bringing this back. I haven't really had time to organize it at all. Once again, I'm putting out the offer for someone to take this project over for me. I'll probably still supervise a bit and keep up with it, but I don't have time to fully run it. Anyways, yeah, that's about right Awesomemans Also, the items will be organized, and the quality will be high. | 2009-12-14 22:42:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
So what type of jobs would a person that leads this project have to do? Because if you need someone to help you out with this, I would happily do it. I've got A LOT of speare time too, and I'm very orginised when it comes to LBP projects. So please, consider my offer. | 2009-12-26 22:31:00 Author: emekcrash Posts: 51 |
