The Haunted Mansion Holiday

Archive: 3 posts

"Twas the Nightmare Before Christmas, and all through the house..."

Welcome, foolish mortals, to my latest idea thread. The passing of Halloween has inspired me with plenty of ghoulish ideas. One of my favorite holiday attractions at the Disneyland Resort in Annaheim, California is the Haunted Mansion Holiday. It opens at the beginning of the Halloween season, and closes at the end of the Christmas season. The soundtrack, characters, and story are all inspired by Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.

"...Not a creature was peaceful, not even a mouse."

The mansion has been taken over by Jack Skellington and all his friends. And this year, Christmas belongs to Halloween Town. The story is quite lovely and it's fun for people of all ages.

"The stockings, all hung by the chimney with care..."

My idea, is to bring this holiday tour into LittleBigPlanet, since I haven't seen anyone try this before. This is not your average Nightmare Before Christmas level. As I bring the story to life, I will be mainly focusing on the music, visuals, and story. There will be quite a lot of gameplay, however.

"...When opened that morning, would cause such a scare!"

I've already started on the architecture, and the characters. The music will probably be the most difficult, since we are somewhat limited on that part. I'm still deciding whether to make it a "ride" or a walkthrough. I'll probably need the community's opinion on that part.

"The children, nestled all snug in their beds..."

This project is the very last on my list, so that I may finish my earlier proposed projects first. But rest assured, this project will NOT be forgotten...

"...Would have nightmares of monsters and skeleton heads!"

Now I ask of your opinion. Would you play this level? Should it be a "ride", or a walkthrough? Do you care more about the music, or the visuals? Any suggestions?

I've definitely seen far more "halloween town" takes on Nightmare Before Christmas than Christmas takes, so I'd like to see this. I personally love levels that are mostly visuals and mood, and don't necessarily have a whole lot of gameplay - if it looks amazing, that's enough for me. I see the creation tools as exactly that - creation tools! You can craft anything, and make really impressive little projects out of it, but they don't have to be full of zany gameplay, they can be diaramas, visual scenes, storylines.

Between ride and walkthrough, I'm not sure - if you do a ride, you could do custom music, with the "cart" controlling the mag key for the music machine.
But for me personally, I would prefer really impressive visuals if it's between that and custom music.

One way to include a bit of gameplay is to make these detailed rooms explorable - no pressure, just allow the player to run around and explore the place in search of some prize bubbles.

If you haven't done much work on this yet, you might consider diving in soon and making it an entry to the new holiday contest (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=18415).

by the way, if you haven't checked it out yet, Taffey has an amazing disneyland space mountain-inspired level called Galaxy Hill (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9887).
