wexfordian
A Creator for All Seasons
Interview conducted by MrsSpookyBuz (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/member.php?u=3896)

wexfordian may have problems with his eyes soon - there have been so many Spotlights shining in them that his retinas are at risk of permanent damage! There's a reason why this popular creator receives so much positive attention - excellence with variety. There's a saying in English soccer: 'form is temporary, class is permanent', and that saying just about hits the wexfordian nail on the head. Let's find out more...

The Low-Down

What video games did you enjoy playing before LBP was released?
Oooohhh I have loved videos games since I first got a Spectrum ZX when I was about 6 or 7.
I loved (in chronological order):
Bubble Bobble (Spectrum)
Robocop (Spectrum)
Paperboy (Spectrum)
Thundercats (Spectrum)
Super Mario Bros (Game Boy) OK, to save time, ALL Mario games on ALL formats
Tetris (Game Boy)
Sonic (Game Gear)
Shinobi (Game Gear)
Mickey Mouse (Game Gear) (Don't laugh, it was a great game!)
Mario Cart (SNES) (OK, that deserved its own mention it rocked that much)
NBA Jam (SNES)
Rock 'n Roll Racing (SNES)
ICO (PS2)
Burnout 3: Takedown (PS2)
Tony Hawks Series (PS2) (I'll always remember getting the new one each christmas and staying up all night with my brother to see who could get the craziest combo)
Grand Theft Auto Series (PS2/3)
Call of Duty Modern Warfare (PS3)
Super Stardust (PS3)
Flower (PS3)
Fat Princess (PS3)

What was the first full level you ever built? And what was it like?
"The Insane Asylum" a level that depicted decapitated heads, animal and teddy bear cruelty and it never got modded! It was built over about a week. I was completely afraid of those weird emitter things and never went near the corner editing tool. It was my very first venture into create mode (I'm very stubborn and headstrong so there was no messing about trying to "learn" stuff.) I used all Media Molecule objects to build the level and just really built some very simple stuff with a little story around it. There is a great buzz when you publish your level for the first time and see other random people playing your level. Some people liked it, some people hated it but that's what it's all about. I remember my old English teacher once told me, "I'd rather fail than get a "c", that way I know where I stand with something". It has always stayed with me and I never try and be average. If your going to do something, enjoy doing and it will work out.

What levels have you published to date?
The Insane Asylum
Little Fish Big Pond
The LittleBig Matrix
Pinball Wizard 1 & 2
Inside the Mind of a "H4H"er
Media Molecules Next Level Pack
Freakie Frankies Fro
The Good, The Bad, The Sackboy Trilogy
Snakes on a Dame

Which of these is your own favourite? And why?
I love them all like they were my little fat Irish babies...

Are there any other creators who inspire you?
Every level I play I see something that inspires me or I learn something from. Of course, some have more so than others though. Off the top of my head...
- RRR30000 inspired me with his Libidius level. He showed me just what is possible if you put your mind to it.
- jackofcourse showed me just how much fun you can have with physics-based gameplay.
- julesyJules showed me just what a powerful tool humour can be in a level and that movie remakes can be so very original when you put your own stamp on them.
- comphermc showed me the fun side of puzzle-based gameplay.
- MrsSpookyBuz showed me the effectiveness of a restrained colour pallette.
- CuzFeeshe showed me LBP can do hectic arcade style.
- NinjaMicWZ showed me a level can be whatever you want it to be.
- johnee showed the brilliance of the physics engine and inspired my trailer level.
- rtm223 showed me how point scoring in a level is just as important a consideration as any other.
- Candyk set the bar for me in terms of aesthetics.
- Morgana25's wonderful Chroma series inspired my Good, Bad, Sackboy 2 level.

What?s the worst thing that?s happened while creating?
Hmmm... How about losing a whole level? I had just finished a lovely little level called "The Little Lost Pink Pixel" which was made entirely of lights. The player was a pink pixel trying to make his way in a world of narrowmindedness and biggotry. The idea behind it was that at the end of it you would find a load of other pink pixels and join together to make a big heart at the score board. It was all going to plan when my data was corrupted and I lost it all as I had not published it locked. Haven't felt compelled to build it again since.

What?s your pet hate in LBP?
People who rapid fire join requests at you as if you didn't see it the first 70 times.

If you worked for Media Molecule, what tool/object/material would you have liked to see developed?
Ooooohhh... the biggie... Well, my friends on this site know that I like to "think big" so I won't bore you with all the extra materials, music and tools I would add. So much has been said about this before on this site that I would simply be repeating it.
I will say that if I worked at Media Molecule I would make a push for expanding the game significantly. Instead of a LBP 2, I would suggest different genres. I know ModNation Racers is coming out but I think a LBP version could blow it out of the water. You could have LBP racer, LBP 3D (real 3D maps), LBP arcade (various sidescolling shooters etc.) Now, once you buy the disc, lets say LBP racer, build your racing track and upload it. It goes into the LBP Universe so that if you have any version of the game you can play it. So let's say you have the original version of LBP and go onto "cool pages" what you would see is a mix of standard platformers, racing games, arcade games etc. all together, and can be categorized and searched for all in the same place. Benefits would be huge. Profit obviously from a new disc based release. It would entice new players that aren't necessarily into platforming games. Would keep all other aspects of the game alive for years to come. DLC would be endless. I'll stop there... I gotta keep some more ideas for the interview

Any tips for new creators?
Never feel intimidated by other people's work. There are some great creators out there producing some very complex levels. This does not mean you should just give up now and forget all about it. Create whatever makes you happy and if that's a rocket cheetah on a skateboard with dropping bombs all over the place, go ahead and make it. Enjoy it. The fun comes from being creative and making something you can look at and go "I made that", with a big cheesy grin on your face. There's a million levels out there and you should have a go at making it a million and one.

The 'Training Program' segment of wexfordian's fabulous The LittleBig Matrix

Digging Deeper

You?ve been involved with LBP from the beginning: what are your personal highlights and lowlights?
The highlight for me wasn't anything to do with the game. It was meeting all of the fantastic people on this site. The community created has been the biggest success of this game in my opinion. When I log on and see a few of these friends already online and playing together you know there will be craic to be had. You just can't beat listening to Morgana25 cracking up as we all run around some crazy bomb dropping level with Zwollie chasing me around after me lucky charms. Or Centurion24 running about the place dressed as a giant poo, then stopping to remove 400 stickers off an object to see just how its built. Some really fun times can be had, only made possible by some of the crazy characters I have been lucky enough to meet.
The lowlight is the same as the highlight unfortunately: the people. Some people try to ruin the fun for others by being nasty to each other. I'm a peace loving hippie when it boils down to it and I don't like it when other people try to belittle others.

You published your trilogy of The Good, The Bad, The Sackboy at the same time ? would you do something similar again, or was the sheer amount of work too much?
I loved putting those three levels together and there were some definite benefits to it but also some negative elements involed. I think its impressive to see a group of levels with a running theme. Snowspot, julesyJules,IceMaiden, Takelow to name a few all have very impressive sets of levels and I thought I would attempt something similar. Sure I was wiped out afterwards but its a little like snowboarding, its exhausting and exhilarating going down the side of a mountain, but once it's all over all you want to do is go back and do it one more time

You made your LittleBigMatrix level copyable for a short amount of time, and over 30 identical levels have appeared ? what was your original intention, and do you now regret it?
Yes and no. I naievely thought I was sharing something with other creators for the sole purpose of going in and having a little nosey about to see how I built stuff. I did not intend or anticipate people publishing it as their own. I don't really mind all that much. That level has been played over 150,000 times so it's not like people think I was the one who copied it.
For all the people who published it as their own I hope that there is a person who took it and learned something from it. I have received messages from people who said that they copied it onto their moon and learnt a lot from it and they thanked me for it. So in a way I achieved what I set out to do. It is just unfortunate that some people took advantage of it for their own gains. Im not one to linger on such things for very long. I have given certain people from this site some of my levels to have a look at simply because I trust them. So it hasn't turned me off the idea that knowledge should be shared.

Your levels are wonderfully varied. Is there a particular type or genre of level that you prefer working on?
No. Variety is the spice of life. I eat food from every corner of the globe, listen to every type of music and believe you should always be constantly evolving into something even more awesome I do make levels that are slightly easier than most for a simple reason. My wonderful fiancee doesn't really play many video games but she likes playing my levels so I design them with her in mind. Whether anyone else likes them is a bonus.

What can we expect from wexfordian in the future?
Plenty more craic on these forums. The odd moan. Levelwise keep an eye on my sig. Will be sending out hints as to what I'm doing right now Whatever it is I hope it will push the seemingly endless boundries of LBP that little bit further away

And finally, if Media Molecule offered you a job, what would be the first thing you'd do?
In this order... Faint. Wake up. Faint again. Wake up again. Sit Mrs wex down in her favourite seat. Pour her a Hennessy (brandy). Pour me an extra large Hennessy. Explain that we're moving to England. Pick Mrs wex off the floor. Jump on a plane and live happily ever after

Incredible details and neat touches are wexfordian's trademark

Our Conclusions

It's true that wexfordian is an amiable, popular chap. It's true that he's a 'thick-skinned, beer-swilling Irishman'. But it's also true that he's an artistic craftsman, a consistently excellent creator, and a creator who KNOWS how to build levels that are great to look at and fun to play. I've just spent the best part of 6 hours replaying his levels - they have everything: drama, humour, puzzles, platforming, horror, Sci-Fi. You name it, wex builds it. But the levels aren't a mad mishmash of ill-conceived themes or ideals. They are seperate entities of sheer brilliance and joy and there is something for everyone and all seasons. And every season is special.

Nice interview once again!! Well done!!
I spotted one tiny mistake, The wizard of odd is missing from his published levels list.

It is very true about Wex not being afraid of sharing his secrets or even entire levels and I still thank him for it.
We all love that Irish levelmachine!!

I've been a huge fan of Wexfordian since I first loaded up Pinball Wizard 2 and didn't stop playing it for about 2 hours. Everything Wex has done has been excellent and fun!

And "Inside the Mind of a 'H4H'er" provided me with one of the best play experiences I've ever had in LPB - where my mind was in a total zen state and my PS3 truly became an extension of my arm! I was popping pimples and collecting points like a maniac, and I SAILED through the race to collect an INCREDIBLE score that I "think" still stands today!

My favorite one? "Freakie Frankies Fro" of course!

Thanks Wex! And thanks MrsSpooky for another great interview!

Wex is a great creator and this was a very good read. I feel bad, because I hadn't played any of wex's levels until I discovered that some jerk had taken his levels and republished them as their own. Here they were, sitting on cool levels. I was so mad that I went and played and hearted all of wex's levels.

His levels just get better and better and he keeps pushing the envelope. While I loved the good, the bad and the sackboy series, I have to say that my favorite was still Media Molecule's Next Level Pack.

Media Molecule should offer Wex a job. He would be a great addition to their team.

Congrats on the spotlight, Wex. And great job again, Spooky. ^_^

A superb spotlight choice yet again and what a great interview!

wex is definitely one of my favorite creators. All of his levels are so seamless and look so effortless, even though the craftsmanship behind the scenes is unmistakably top grade. They encourage others (including the entirely talentless like me) to try her or his hand at creating something (although, in my case, the end product, not so much...), which is, I believe, in line with the core spirit of LBP.

I particularly like how this interview spotlights not just wex the awesome creator (his levels do speak for themselves) but wex the awesome chap. Some real jewels from a wise man in there! :hero:

Thanks again for all the fun and spectacular levels wex! o/ o/

Thank you MrsSpookyBuz for yet another amazing and insightful interview and read!

I saw this coming.

As for levels being wiped out while creating, that use to happen to me a lot also until I started publishing locked. I'm sure everyone's been there, and I feel your pain Wex, although I'm sure for someone as talented as yourself that it would be even more of a pain. That pixel level sounded like it would of been an awesome level.

Very nice interview! ^_^

Thanks as always to CC for posting this. I'm really very pleased and meekly stunned at how they're received and at all the comments. Thank you so much, everyone.

Some members may not be aware that with these Spotlights, there are sometimes questions/answers that are edited out for one reason or another. No conspiracies or anything, just more to do with space constraints or some such.

However, where wexfordian was concerned, there was a particular question that both I and wex pondered over. In fact, it led to a phone conversation that I feel I should reveal here as a bit of a behind-the-scenes treat. Apologies for the slight lengthiness of the post (but I hope you'll forgive me this once), and apologies to wex for reasons that you'll soon discover...

-------------------------------------------------

MrsSB: Hiya James, it's Lisa.
wex: Lisa?
MrsSB: It's Lisa - MrsSpookyBuz from LBPC.
wex: Ooh, hi Lisa, love! How's things?
MrsSB: Great thanks. I'm phoning about the Spotlight. I'm just about to finish it off and email it to ConfusedCartman, but I have a few---
wex: Ahh, you're phoning about the 'What have you achieved' question, aren't you?
MrsSB: Umm... yes. Well, parts of your answers, really.
wex: Come on, Lisa, we've known each other long enough - spit it out.
MrsSB: Okay, it's the bit about you climbing Kilimanjaro. When you were 12.
wex: Hmm?
MrsSB: You've written that you climbed the mountain in a Leprechaun outfit. Just seems a bit... er... made up.
wex: Really? I was trying to 'spruce it up' a bit.
MrsSB: I'm sure people will find your answers interesting without you having to make things up... I mean, spruce things up. Can we leave it out?
wex: *sighs* Okay, if you must. [agitated] Anything else, MrsFussyPants?
MrsSB: Yes there is, sorry. It's the U2 thing...
wex: Huh? What's wrong with that bit?!!
MrsSB: Oh James, I've been a fan of U2 for a long time, and I honestly can't find any proof that they auditioned you for their bodhr?n player.
wex: [getting angry] Hey, it's bleeping true, Lisa! I even sent you photographic proof!
MrsSB: No, James, you sent me a photograph of U2 on stage, and you superimposed a picture of yourself onto it. It just looks false.
wex: Bleep! I was there! I banged that bodhr?n like a man possessed!
MrsSB: Calm down, mate. I just don't want people to get the wrong idea of you. You're great, you're a popular guy, what's the problem?
wex: *silence*
MrsSB: James, you okay? What's the prob?
wex: Really? I'm popular? I'm speechless, I really didn't realise!
MrsSB: It's true! Now, shall we forget about this conversation.
wex: Perhaps it's for the best. Cheerio!

Wexfordian is such an icon around here, and this was so obviously on it's way and well deserved, that I'm not even going to go to the effort of typing out my own sentiments here as I have nothing to add that hasn't been said, and instead I'll just very discreetly plagiarize the sentiments of another poster.

I saw this coming.

Who in the WORLD could have said that??!!!! Try picking a quote from someone less obscure next time! I cannot IMAGINE who would say that, put it in magenta typeface, and use the ^_^ smiley....
who could it be.....

oh and he likes my laugh so, yea I'm biased

Can you blame him?? I've only played online with you twice, and got almost immediately that you're one of the Great Laughers. It's a rare breed of human, but they're out there, and I've met one or two in my day. One that I met was being kept in a cage in someone's living room! Two others were being hunted for their valuable laugh-juices. You're one of the lucky ones, believe me.

Basically, it's someone with a sensitive funny-bone, who can laugh at almost everything, and whose laugh, like some kind of mysterious airborne disease, instantly infects everyone else in the vicinity. As I mentioned above, the juices of the laugh glands of Great Laughers are highly prized treasures, worth thousands of dollars. Keep them secret. Keep them safe.

Hey guys, check this out! WHOOOA, it's Creator Spotlight 3, uh ooooh!!

Okay, so maybe I didn't get that quote exactly right. But nevertheless, this was just an absolute treat.

the phone call was very insightful as well, and confirmed many curiosities I had about the Irish One.

Thank you so very much.

Absolutely! I didn't want to give anything away before it was posted officially. wexfordian not only makes great levels, but he contributes a lot to this site, so he was a natural choice.

Word on the street is that he uses an army of Leprechauns and teases them with Guinness. This is the only way he able to produce levels of such a high standard.

Talent is not something this irish chap with blessed with. Just a swarm of little green clothed creatures and a sea of black beer! But lucky for him (a product of the charms I would assume) that's all he needs!

I've heard this as well. I talked to a guy at the pub who was paranoid about "the little green buggers" and their "unnatural master", a man with what he described as "a head shiny and smooth". He was really shaken up, like he had seen something quite troubling. "Unnatural", he kept saying, shaking his head. For some reason he got really scared anytime someone ordered a Guinness, he'd start scooting his stool farther down the bar.

I didn't want to mention this, but I've been noticing what appears to be leprechaun gold falling out of Wex's pockets lately.

Something's going on, is all jack and I are saying.

Something unnatural.

The legend also says that he has quite a high turnover of these little creatures.

He rewards them with Guinness for good creations but as soon as they're out of ideas he forces the black stuff upon them until they can take no more. Such sadistic irony is the actions of a mad man in my opinion.

I hear that the Leprechaun who put that unsightly blue gas in Snakes on a Dame got a particularly nasty punishment. A meal of Lucky Charms cereal and Guinness until it was coming out of their little pointy ears...which he then saved and used on the next under performing soul.

He may be crazy but he doesn't like to waste his beer!

My god, man, I didn't realize how deep the rabbit leprechaun hole went!

I just looked through the media molecule photos of the fan meet that just happened. One especially caught my eye.

http://www.mediamolecule.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/4067521939_30fc2edf30_b-600x450.jpg

there was something strange about it though, so I took it into photoshop and blew it up bigger.

If you're easily frightened or don't want your image of Wex as an pure, skilled, moral, and highly-talented level creator to be tainted, than please look away!

Yeah I noticed that little bugger floating around all afternoon. It kept kicking me in the shins.

My guess would be that he brought it along just in case anyone asked him to do a bit of creating. I did wonder why he had a stash of Guinness in his bag...I just presumed it was some kind of Irish tradition.

Ahh the jigsaw is fitting together and your world is coming crashing down now Wex. Let them go and we'll go easy on you. (Is it wise to be threatening this crazed man? If my body is found swimming in a sea of Guinness by the morning I expect someone to avenge my death!)

Listen Jack, I want you to know something.

I really respect you, and while we haven't had much interaction around here, this act of digging up Wex's dark secrets has been a bonding experience. i consider you a friend.

And... well...

If leprechaun magic ends up cursing us both, I just want you to know that I'll probably... tell the leprechauns it was all you, and that you made me do it... so that they'll take you, and not me. Because I want to live. Not drown in a black sea of stout beer.

So... Just thought I'd let you know, man.

Brothers in arms.

The feeling is mutual, my good friend.

We must do what we can to save the Leprechauns. The RSPCA don't cover them so it is down to us. But if the opportunity arises that I can sell you out to save myself, I will take no hesitation in throwing you straight to the little green creatures.

Our honesty is clearly the deep routing foundation of our undeniable bond.

Yes, it was tough. I was also getting progressively worse as the Guinn---, er, the 'time' flowed by!

Wex, you're levels are great man. About The Matrix, I never thought that was your strongest level anyway, so who cares that people are passing it off as their own. But if you ever make any of your other levels copyable, I'll hit ye over the head.2009-11-08 14:24:00

I had the awesome honor of working on a project in the Beta with Wex. It was definitely, one of the best create sessions I've ever been in. You deserve this Wex and I hope we get to work together again sometime in the future. Your levels are all real gems.2009-11-08 19:38:00

Thanks to the two of you, these interviews are always a good read and Wex is definitely a littleBiglegend on these forums. Such a great and varied collection of levels (although I'm gutted about the lil pinky pixel never seeing the light of day!)2009-11-08 20:11:00

I don't know if its this spotlight, or just random timing, or what but I went home and was feeling so good about all this I decided too pop into create (which I have been strugling with for a while) just to see what comes out.

Well, lets just say the block is over! I built a helicopter that flys just like a helicopter should, will have 4 different powerups, and deploys a rescue rope..... all just using the analog stick and the R1 button for controls. Its amazing what a bit of confidence can do to someone.

Thats why I always believe that if you don't have something positive to say then don't say anything. (constructive critism is positive )

So thanks again to everyone, especially Mrs. Spookybuz and Confused Cartman for helping to create great community spirit here.

I'll let you know how I get on with my helicopter
