TCGs. Anyone play any?

Archive: 24 posts

I was wondering if anyone played any. I have fond memories of playing Pokemon trading card games with my little sister. i always won, because I had the perfect deck. I still have a deck or two around somewhere, and haven't touched them in years. I occasionally would get cards for the bringing back the past, but not anymore. *sigh*.

My question to you is,

Any fond memories of Trading Card Games?

Any you would recommend?

Any you have played?

Actually made some with a friend while on a coach to the IOW 3 and a half years ago. We called them 'Yu-Pi-Shmo'. I still have them all in a drawer over there *points*2009-11-05 21:15:00

I was thinking of playing that some time, but my parents don't aprove of monsters, magic, and the like.

I'll find a way around it SOMEHOW.

Meh heh heh...

Yeah i play magic the gathering i go to a club every week and take part in tournaments. Been playing 5 years now.

The good thing about it is old cards get phased out so the game doesn't get repetative.

Agreed. That said, it feels like you never quite have all the "pieces to the puzzle". Always collecting.

My friends drag me into playing Magic: the gathering with them once in a while... but I'm too cheap to buy my own deck

Thankfully they all collect thousands upon thousands of cards and always have some spare decks I can use to play.

I own and have played MtG and YuGiOh both casually and competitively.

MtG is a fun game to play casually. I just bought a bunch of boosters/starter packs from the sets that were new at the time and played with my friend who has a bunch of old cards he got off of a relative. I also bought some singles on ebay. They were mostly cards I thought looked fun/useful and not for netdecking.

I've only tried competitive MtG twice, but both times I was highly disappointed by how unfun it is, so I gave up on keeping current with that game.

I then got into YuGiOh from a couple of girl friends who used to play between classes. This was before the game was swamped with preteens and netdeckers. I purchased an extensive collection of boosters from each set, always looking for that one set of cards I *had* to have. After a while, considering all of the multiple junk cards I was accumulating I opted to purchase the rarest cards I wanted off of ebay. Some of the prices were ridiculous though, so I learned the finer art of bid sniping.

Competitions were actually quite fun, with decks being varied and kept from being cheap by the ever-changing ban list. Players were also a lot more fun in competitions than with MtG, they were really in it for the fun of playing the game and not just for the prizes.

Tell me more!

Anyways, I wouldn't buy cards off Ebay, unless it is cheap and useful.

But thanks for the input! MtG will most likely be my choice.

The last time I played a TCG was Yu-Gi-Oh... and I was 10. Hoo boy, was that fun though! And yeah, that was before the netdeckers.2009-11-06 18:09:00

What/who are "netdeckers"?

To google I go,
-chezhead

EDIT: Can't find what they are.
EDIT 2: Found out what they are! I think its OK, but I don't care. If the person cares that much about the game, let them be that way. I'm in it to have fun, not to win a ton of stuff.

Long story short, you wait around until the very final seconds of an auction before placing your max bid. Since people don't have the time to react to your bid, you'll likely get off paying less than if you had bid earlier and let people try to "outbid" you.

It also helps to track multiple auctions for the same item that are ending within the same time frame, that way the people who bid high will bid on the first few items, and the next ones should go for a much lower price.

Well, I don't suggest ebay for very rare/sought out cards, but you can generally find batches of common cards and boosters fairly cheap. Some people who abandon the game tend to sell their entire collections on ebay in lots.

I used to play Yugioh cards until my dog peed on them...

Then years later, I walk into a card store to get my brother something and noticed one of the cards I used to have was worth $35.00.

Man, I'd call you all a bunch of nerds except, most of my friends, okay all of my friends in high school played Magic. I thought they were just making themselves permanent virgins. I never really understood half the games. The cards seemed pretty cool though. I used to read them so I guess that makes me a dumb nerd, meh. Anyway, they stopped playing after like a year, they said it was dumb LOL. Can't help fads huh Pogs? I'm more grown up now and my opinion has changed due to maturity. I think you should do whatever makes you happy, and don't worry about what other people think, in case there are girls, then try to make it look cool. lol2009-11-07 10:04:00

Man, now I miss my Pogs. They had such awesome designs.
I even had the official playing mat, or whatever it was. That cheap, black, round thing.

I think we all would prefer the term "geek" as to "nerd". At least, I'd rather be a geek; I won't speak for my fellow geek/nerd brethren.

Magic: The Gathering is both a load of fun and extremely complex. New sets every couple of months means that the scene stays fresh and there's always something new, fun, and challenging to play or play against.
