Back to the Basics! Round 3
Archive: 60 posts
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2595/4074713443_9b30703cca_o.jpg Round 3 starts today. Once again your task is to build a level however this time around you are limited to the eight basic materials, you may not use decoration and only certain stickers. Rules: 1. Every switch must be visible. Whether it's a standard switch, a custom made switch or a logic gate, you are not allowed to hide it. They need to be in plain sight. 2. Everything else must be visible as well. No hidden emitters, no invisible pistons, no invisible robes and of course no invisible materials. Exception: Magic mouths and speakers. 3. You may not use any DLC content. The only exception are the things found in the Creator Pack 1 ie. the unlimited life checkpoint. 4. You may only use the eight basic materials and your level needs to contain more than one material. In other worlds pure cardboard levels for example are not allowed. You need to use at least some of the other materials as well. (Dark matter and dissolve use for switches and holding the level up do not count!) 5. You may not use decoration and stickers, excluding the basic colour stickers (squares, circles), the arrow stickers and should you have it the R1 sticker. The criteria of judgement: - Playability - Fun And of course the design and how well you have managed to incorporate the switches. The more integrated they are the better. A AND/OR switch that is part of the environment is better than the same switch that floats in mid air. So be creative, think about logical ways of implementing the logic into your design. Novel ways of creating a switch will be favourably looked upon. The aim: To help people understand how switches and logic mechanisms work and how they affect a level. Deadline: Remember, remember the sixth of December. Judges: - Me and two volunteers. PS: For those of you interested, fnook drew the Sackboys in the header. I stole them from his deviantart page. ^.^ | 2009-11-05 15:33:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |

I'm almost certainly going to compete! Hopefull others will compete too! That would be pretty terrible if I'm the only one in it and I still don't win. Very embarassing to me indeed! | 2009-11-05 19:48:00 Author: piggabling Posts: 2979 |
5. You may not use decoration and switches, excluding the basic colour stickers (squares, circles), the arrow stickers and should you have it the R1 sticker. Wait? How is it possible to create a level without switches? I hope you meant stickers. Anyways, I'm in, gonna get started right away. | 2009-11-05 20:24:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
Whaaaaale, it's simple - use MAGIC! YEAAAH! Or just a jumping level. I may enter this, keep your eyes peeled. EDIT: OHOHOHO MAJOR QUESTION - What about "Lights"? Are we allowed those? If I were to say yay or nay, I'd say yes to LED and Spotlight and No to everything else - Lighting is really essential for good levels. | 2009-11-05 20:58:00 Author: dawesbr Posts: 3280 |
Yes, I meant stickers. (Though that would be a good idea for "Back to the Stoneage". You could probably simulate a few switches just by relying on the physics.) As for lights; I agree with what you said. LEDs and Spotlights only. | 2009-11-06 08:20:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |

That's correct. | 2009-11-07 08:21:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Hi just a quick question. If for example you have a car or something in the level, and it has a three way switch (the ones where you have 2 winches attached to either side so that it can move in both directions.) If the switch with the winches is at the beggining of where the car starts, but goes off screen when you get to where the car stops, and then something happens to the switch (like it gets destroyed by a mag switch when the car comes in contact with a mag key or something) but you cant see that its been altered because its offscreen. Does that count. Confused ? I am. | 2009-11-07 13:36:00 Author: theamilien Posts: 485 |

i was thinking that you might be able to because the main point is to show how the logic works, but does it matter about the effect or what the logic causes? So you could show the logic but not what its done. or would that be defeating the purpose? | 2009-11-07 13:52:00 Author: theamilien Posts: 485 |
maybe some how integrating the logic onto the car would work but it all depends on what Syroc says. I dont thing there would be anything wrong with it though. | 2009-11-07 13:56:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
It's kind of the same as elevators where the logic stays at the bottom while you go up. That was allowed in the first one. TBH, I'd think it would probably be allowed, but it's gotta be better if you can keep the logic on screen whilst it is being used. | 2009-11-07 14:02:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
hmmnn... ok then, thanks for the helps guys | 2009-11-07 14:12:00 Author: theamilien Posts: 485 |
I'd wait for a clarification from syroc, before you make any firm decisions | 2009-11-07 14:21:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
It's allowed. Alternatively you can just put the switch on a trailer or the mechanism of a lift underneath/on top of the lift so it gets carried along. That would be better still. | 2009-11-07 14:21:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
oki doke then syroc. oh.... and i have to more questions: 1) can i use a fairy light? 2) can a piston be off screen? for example if it pushed a peice of wood down that had a swingy sponge on, but you cant see the piston? Also can a piston be covered up by a thin piece of material ( like a bridge that goes across from the side when you pull a switch?) | 2009-11-08 11:55:00 Author: theamilien Posts: 485 |
1) Hmm, fairy lights? Those are basically one layer LEDs right? I suppose you can use them. 2) Yes it can be offscreen if you absolutely have to put it offscreen but no hiding behind thin or thick walls. | 2009-11-08 11:59:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Ok i didnt read the basic 8 mats.. **** | 2009-11-08 12:14:00 Author: CreateNPlay Posts: 1266 |
no hiding behind thin or thick walls. Awww fudge... What if i say pretty please and give you my puppy dog eyes while fluttering my unfeasibly large lash inserts ? | 2009-11-08 12:30:00 Author: theamilien Posts: 485 |
No. smidc | 2009-11-08 15:23:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
No. well that was effective ... you must have a heart of stone syroc for my puppy dogs to not work. can i use thin layer glass? because you can still see the piston. so that counts right? | 2009-11-08 18:22:00 Author: theamilien Posts: 485 |
Yeah, "hide" behind glass if you really think that is necessary. | 2009-11-08 18:59:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
I can be a judge, since you have no volunteers. | 2009-11-08 19:18:00 Author: Drakora Posts: 392 |
I'll decide who can judge nearer to the end. | 2009-11-10 09:51:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
By the way the winner gets all the XP I have on the day the winner is announced. | 2009-11-14 09:15:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
you dont have much experience i see. | 2009-11-14 10:26:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
Well I gave you a large part of it and gave much to dawsbr before that. But I did gain 200 over the last two weeks or so. Potentially the winner could win quite a bit of xp. Plus I can always change my mind and "buy" another one of those xp packs, if I feel that more levels are deserving a reward | 2009-11-14 11:04:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
lol yeah thanks for the donation BTW. | 2009-11-14 11:13:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
YES! I shall enter this, and I shall win! 8D EDIT: Almost win. ..Hold on..Are we only allowed to use the square colour stickers? o.o ..No beloved doodle sticker section to be used? And we cannot only use cardboard? i will have to develop a new style! Exiting! I'll get creating right away! 8D | 2009-11-14 22:13:00 Author: Mnniska Posts: 531 |
Yes, too pretty much all of it, except you can also use round colour stickers. | 2009-11-16 18:30:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
OK later today i am going to post the DEMO of my entry its just as much as I currently have made, it might change bu once its up i want feedback i have a rather difficult bit (You will realize what it is when you get there) I need you to help me figure out if i should change the checkpoint to a double life checkpoint. P.S no i will not use an infinite life checkpoint I will repost when the level is up which may be a while. | 2009-11-21 11:46:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
OK the Demo will be up in 2 min its called "B2B3 Terrible Times 2 DEMO | 2009-11-21 14:59:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |

I have a look at it later. (If I don't get stuck playing Demon's Soul^.^) I want demons souls hmm For some reason its being glitchy and my magic mouths aren't working on the published version i dont know why but its still playable | 2009-11-21 15:04:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
hey i think i'm gonna do this i gona start work on it asap | 2009-11-23 15:57:00 Author: lbpholic Posts: 1304 |
I made my entry already! It's quite short so I may add to it later but you can find it searching "@samuli95". It's in the north pole with my other LBPC-related levels. It's called simply "Back to the basics 3 entry". | 2009-11-24 13:34:00 Author: ZramuliZ Posts: 55 |
I want demons souls hmm For some reason its being glitchy and my magic mouths aren't working on the published version i dont know why but its still playable Played your level now. I guess you meant the fire log jumping bit. That was ok once I had figured out the timing. I found the bouncing platforms near the start harder. The magic mouths seemed to work for me. By the way I liked that you have shown how do to the waterfall effect. The first section is incredibly laggy for some reason. It's fine once you are out of the cave. @Zamruli: Thanks! I've listed your level in the second post. | 2009-11-25 21:59:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |

Well thanks for the help there isn't that much i can do about the lag but i'll try the rest of the level is pretty nice at them moment but you wont see that till next week. I am spending way more time on the level than in the last contest. | 2009-11-26 09:54:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
Well my level is almost complete and i will definitely have it out before the deadline, it will probably be out on saturday like i had planned from the start. This contest may be a two horse race but i'm still going to pull out all the stops to win. | 2009-12-01 14:26:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
Three horse actually as far as I know. Mnniska is also building a level. | 2009-12-01 16:36:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
I am indeed. I have spent the past 2 weeks creating my level,and I am about 50% done. | 2009-12-02 11:32:00 Author: Mnniska Posts: 531 |

Oh, thanks for reminding me. I thought it was the 16th as well. I'm not going to have a look until tomorrow night, so if you want you can tweak a little bit more. | 2009-12-06 18:16:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
Hey if I new you were gonna forget i would of spent a few more hours on it | 2009-12-07 09:29:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
Haha, sorry. Going to have a look at them around 6CET today. | 2009-12-07 10:33:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
I probably won't have time until late tonight (i.e. tomorrow morning) | 2009-12-07 12:25:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
No problem. I played them all just now, but I can't finish yours, robotiod. I'm stuck at the section where you have to push a block underneath a gate then run through some spikes and grab another switch. Any tips? | 2009-12-07 19:36:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
OK, my votes won't be in on time, but I have a semi-legitimate reason this time: My controller ran out of battery. All I'll say is I was really enjoying the level I was playing at the time it happened. Bear with me on this one. | 2009-12-08 02:38:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
@ syroc I was really nasty with that last puzzle it was 2 in the morning on friday and i wanted to do something sick and twisted, all i can say is look at what the 2 grab switches do, thats if you can get past the spikes and then just try to beat the timer when pushing the block. there isn't really much of the level after that anyways but if you finish that would be good. | 2009-12-08 09:17:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
Managed it and even beat your high score! Right, now to the results. The winner of this round is.... Mnniska! You win all my xp! Of course only if you want it. If not it goes to the second placed robotiod. | 2009-12-09 10:50:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
wohooo! Thanks a bunch! It was loads of fun to createand really opened my eyes for what I could do after this crazy concept-vise. *does small victory dance* (Not really, but I'm still happy ) | 2009-12-09 15:01:00 Author: Mnniska Posts: 531 |
