Do you like LBP Music Levels?

Archive: 33 posts

Hi, if you don't know me(which apparently not a lot of people on this site do.)

I make a bunch of music levels. But I get a lot of comments saying "music levels just make me wanna hear the better 'real' version".

So, I feel as though that music levels aren't as awesome as say platformers, or races or puzzle levels. Most of the levels I made were music levels because they were easy to do and I thought it was nice to have a little piano version/8-bit version of my favorite songs.

But now, I feel as though I shouldn't publish anymore and just keep them to myself because people prefer levels that you actually have to "play" rather than listen to.

So...how do you feel music levels? Do you think their getting old and aren't really that interesting anymore?

Thanks for your input.

I like them, but I prefer if they are more than a car driving past some switches. Accompanying scenery would make many music levels nicer.

This is still my favourite music level: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkZwBf4QQG0&feature=related

Music levels are great as long as they have alot of time put into them, and not just a bunch of random notes strung together. I have played the music levels that you have published, and they are epic. I don't think that music levels are getting old, its just that many players my not want to stand still on a button and listen to music without any actual gameplay. Depending on how much thermo the music takes up, adding a simple level along the theme of the song would be awesome.2009-11-05 10:12:00

My favorite music level is Chapter 2: Caverns of The Snow Queen in IceMaiden's Snow Queen trilogy. It's a music level that, in my opinion, adds to the emotional weight of the story and provided some fantastic visuals for your eyes to feast on. I highly recommend you check it out, but play the entire trilogy!2009-11-05 13:21:00

I love music levels, and have tried several time to make some. They've all failed miserably though v.v

I'd love to try yours out sometime!

Oh, and a little thing you may want to remember:
In my opinion I think people find it more fun in a music level to spawn in a car that moves on it's own that you cannot jump out of, so that the people can still run around and goof off or do whatever else they want while the music is still playing. Then when you reach the end of the level, the car will pass by the scoreboard and the car will either stop, dissolve (you would have had to create the car out of dissolve material, or just emit the car somewhere else), or hit a wall, causing the level to end. And good scenery really helps too :]

Different people like different things for different reasons, and LBP is all the more fabulous because there's a wide variety of goodies for every palate. So I don't think you should ever feel as though you shouldn't publish something unless you personally believe it is not publish-worthy.

Personally, I love music levels, especially yours comishguy67. Even though it may be easier from your perspective, I think it is extremely difficult to make a good music level and requires a lot of talent, which obviously you have loads of. I also think that the enjoyment factor in part depends on the player as well. I loved every single one of your MJ levels, and I like to enjoy them by getting a few friends in my pod, dressing up in our MJ costumes, dropping into your level and then have a dance off through the song. It's loads of fun.

I also thought Music Land was a great way of showcasing your musical talents and integrating platforming into your level.

Yes, and I agree with mrsupercomputer, IceMaiden's Caverns of the Snow Queen is indeed supremely amazing. I posted a video of it in her level showcase thread if you want to check it out, but obviously that's just a quick fix, you must play her Trilogy for the full experience.

I love music levels! It shows how creative the community is and what LBP can do. Top 3 are:

1. Just Dance- Lady Gaga
2. Crazy Train- Ozzy Osbourne
3. Beethoven

I'm not a huge fan of music levels but I can appreciate the work when I come accross one that it great.

But I have question, (honest question). Most music levels have some offbeat or lag. I was wondering, is there engine related problems that would make a physically accurate placement of speaker to NOT play exactly like it is supposed to? Because this problem is widespread so I said to myself "it must not be all of those people that can't do their thing proper".

So what do you guys think? If you want an example of what I am saying, look out of that dude that reproduces Megaman songs. A quick look at my hearted list and you should find it right away (over america)

I am actually working on a music level (I only really work on it when I'm bored) but I found out that the game lags if you haven't played one of the sounds before. Take a piano, for instance. The first time you hear the piano, the game has to load it, so it takes a while. The second time, however, there's no lag. That's why you should put all of the sounds at the beginning of the level so the game can load them first. That way there should be little-to-no lag.

In case you're wondering, the song I'm working on is "Wind Scene" from the Chrono Trigger OST.

I loooove music levels, especially the ones from games that I haven't heard in a long time... take for example, the Cave Theme from Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal. I've tried multiple times to make my own levels, and I get nice starts, but then I realize that it's a lot different than emulating music on a REAL instrument, and I just go and delete the work. Ah well. What I'd like to see are some more less-cliche, more-surprising songs. 2009-11-07 02:50:00

Great theory. I suspect sounds are de-loaded after a while though because there are some song parts that were repeating 2-3 times and there was lag in that same part. Anyhow, if you ever finish your song i'll be curious to listen to it.

i like music levels, but not the ones where its off-pitch and off beat. also ones with bad vehicles, where you have to stand on a button or constantly pull a lever.

ive been meaning to make a music level, but after many miserable attempts i decided i might have a friend make the music while i make the visuals... kinda like a collab

I enjoy them if a) they contain some tongue-in-cheek visuals (i.e. TheJollyRajah) or b) they add emotional visuals and story (IceMaiden).

I remember one AMAZING one where they had a full-blown piano with material hitting the keys to play a classical piece that I was really impressed by.

I love them. 2 favourites are the Starfox theme and another one called Christmas Concerto (I think). He used paint balls to hit the notes so got through 3 or 4 different songs. I'll edit in the proper name and creator when I find it.

@Cabbage: Syroc linked to that very level.

Nope not really. I don't "play" them and I'm not really interested.

But that shouldn't stop you making them, if someone who doesn't like music levels plays one and then leaves a negative comment, then I think that just says more about them than the quality of you level.

I say continue to publish them, as some people will like them. Just ignore the comments from idiots.

Don't do that^I lol'd.

Anyway, I enjoy a music level now and again, as long as it's good. I mean, I've played some music levels where I couldn't make out what the song was supposed to be at all, and then I've played some where I almost couldn't tell I wasn't listening to the real thing. As a general rule, however, instrumental songs transfer over to LBP much better than songs with lyrics, because the creator just ends up making the notes the same as the words and neglecting the actual music.

I think they are ok, but most just look like garbage. Seriously so many creators spend all the time to create a great song but they forget about the visuals, they put an empty background, a car, scoreboard and call it a day. Imo you have to do more than that, now this isn't how every music level is but unfortunatley most are.2009-11-07 15:59:00

Hello, I saw your music levels before I joined LBCP. I really like music levels, specially when the music was well done, which means the person took good care of the level, putting effort and deserving any consequential plays, hearts or whatever "rewards" for their good work that may come.
And depending on the custom music?s "weight" on the thermometer, we can use said custom music to produce levels with original in game music . So go on with music levels, they are a beautiful form of art.

I'm with the majority. ABSOLUTELY LOVE MUSIC LEVELS. And I've had the opportunity to listen to yours comishguy. You make good stuff. Don't feel like you need to follow the masses and create a level that's not what you're about and what you're into.

I highly recommend you check it out, but play the entire trilogy!

I would have to agree with this. Most music levels just go for the music and disregard the visuals. Not Icey! She went all out!

That said, I've only played a handful of music levels that have really wowed me. Some of the others were decent, but it takes a mix of music and something to look at to impress me. Although KornDaawg and A_morton have done some nice, simple-looking music levels.

I don't remember the name of the creator, but I played a fantastic level where the player sits in a chair as he or she "rides" down a hallway with music playing. It was just a really cool visual treat to go along with the music. The same creator has done an automated piano like the video posted above, but without the unsightly sponge "hands". I'll edit if I can figure out his name...

Edit: Oh yeah, Shredator (member here) made an awesome Portal: Still Alive music loop (quite a good one, I might add). He made it for me on the pretense that I'd be able to add to my Aperture Science Glados Level (what a sweetheart), but it didn't fit into the level. I urged him to publish it as his own, but he wouldn't hear of it. Now, I have the level sitting published and locked on my moon. I haven't heard from him in ages, and I refuse to unlock it as my own... now, I almost feel obligated to remake the level so it will fit in there... AH!

Not really.... That's why we have ipods. lol. Although I think music levels themselves are useless, personally, I think music in an actual level can really add a huge impact 2009-11-08 23:14:00

Most people think I'm being lazy when I don't put visuals in my music levels, but the simple fact is, my music alone takes up the whole thermo, and I can't add any visuals without making compromises to the music. The whole point of a music level is to make a good song with the limited tools available to you. It's very much like Mario Paint because it's fun to see what you can do when you don't have much to work with. If you expect great visuals in a music level, then stay far away from my levels.

Here's an example of a song I've made which uses the whole thermo bar. I consider this my best music level.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AN8q3-nRa0

This level was not only noticed by IGN, but Capcom as well.

As you can see, without visuals, I can boost the quality of the music itself.

ComishGuy knows what I mean.

Its hard to make a music level look good when it takes up all the logic besed thermo by itself. As a result you are limited to using the edge and sticker/accesories thermos. Without lights and pistons/bolts etc, the level can become bland and static. More effort must be put into creating a detailed environment that wont cause slowdown, yet has enough detail and variety to keep the player entertained throughout.2009-11-15 13:39:00

This thing about music levels and the the thermo can be quite a challenge in our search for perfect thermo usage balance ... But depending on the music we can make it really detailled and still have thermo left to implement the rest of the level... And also we could consider that in lots of musics there are parts that our ears never notice, so in order to gain thermo space we could remove them from the music, maybe, to the point they wouldn?t cause a negative impact on the music? 2009-11-15 17:30:00

Some music levels can be just as beautiful as other levels, in my opinion, and as long as they have work put into them, I rather enjoy them. Here is my favorite:
