What overused gameplay element are you terribly sick of

I used to be sick of those puzzles where you have a jet pack and you need to put the right coloured grabbable material in the right coloured basket/pouch or whatever. Not as many people are doing that now though.

At the moment I am sick of levels that have only one type of gameplay in, and it has pink floaty in it, my nemesis...

Maybe those mazes with the fiery or electric walls? I have seen some good ones with moving elements to avoid, but the simple follow the back and forth blazing tight path for adventure? I don't like those much.

However a amazing twist on this was CCubbage's take on pac man in his Splatfest 3. Now that was cool and fun!

Wheels that spin really fast, and you have to let go at the right moment to launch yourself higher to grab, thats right, another wheel. Then you get all the way to the top, miss time one, and fall all the way back to the bottom with no checkpoint.2009-11-04 18:33:00

I'd probably say Sponge Swings. There are loads of levels completely revolving around them called stuff like "50 swings! can u survive?!"
I really wish someone would do something new with swings, I don't know what, but an awesome creator like wexfordian, xkappax, or MrsSpookyBuz (just to name a few out of lots) should be able to create something!

Oh, I was just going to change my sensor switch jump-pads to button jump-pads. I hardly ever see them.

What about cloth swings? Or swings that you can use again after the level turned 180??



Overall I think I can conclude that I don't play enough levels to get sick of anything. Or maybe all the elements are in levels with dreadfully long intros which I will always quit if the level doesn't start within 20 seconds after the intro started.

Agreed. All the stuff listed so far I can take in small ammounts. It's when the whole level is one kind of thing I get a little bored usually.

Oh and badly transitioned global lighting or rapid fire changes for no reason in lighting. That bugs me.

It's fine if the level is full of lots of different creatively designed enemies and these are just the easy ones, but I see very few levels that actually do that. Most of the time these are the only types of enmies used, and it gets a bit boring.

Default mario enemies huh? They work as mini obstacles inbetween platforming bits or tougher enemies, but not as the main challenges themselves.

I hate ice though. I hate when there are ice platforms used as a cheap way of supposedly making it "harder".

I am also tired of all of the cool pages trends. It's really lame.

Mr.V! How can you dislike survival challenges! Bubble caves, clockworx, steel wheel... As long as they increase in difficulty and are detailed and creative then they're good in my book

For me, im sick of trick levels where there's three buttons, each one kills you, and then a fourth one appears. SO LAME!

I LIKE COLLAPSING BRIDGES! I have one in Meteor, and it rocks. Don't insult the bridge.
I HATE practicly anything where you have only one life and involves jumping on small columns or *shudder* PINK FLOATY.

You hate survival challenges? Really? I can see those horrible bomb survival challenges, but just any old survival challenge? You hate Canyon Jazz? You hate Sushi Machine? Some survival challenges are just so clever and addictive I just can't hate them.

I hate that grab-slide technique. You know, when you grab the ceiling and slowly inch across. I hate those, especially when they're ridiculously long and drawn out.

I love climbing on ceilings. And trees. As for slowly inching... you realise you can go nearly the same speed as running when you are dangling from the ceiling?

I hate using the paintinator to shoot one wall for it to go down, then the next then the next.... each one going down less and less to make steps. I Nearly blew a fuse playing h007bradley's Overheated III. He did this section 3 or 4 times throughout ther level....

Also I hate what people have done to mdaj's series. Pure epicness that I loved but then it led to about loads of copycats that just make walkers and space ships were you don't do anything other than watch.

I'm in the process of making my first level. This thread has gave me a lot of ideas of what NOT to put in lol . I really want it to be unique, with clever puzzles. I'm still in the process of working them out.

1 thing I hate is the Spinning wheels you hold on to, then have to let go and fly up and grab another.

@Awesomemans: There are some legitimately good survival challenges out there, and those are hard to hate. But the vast majority of them fail. I think that's what mistervista was talking about. The fail ones.

Oh, I almost forgot. Boring intro sequences. You know, the ones that take like five minutes and you only get to watch as the title of the level, the level creator, his best friends and a picture of his dog pop up. If it's something creative or it just comes up as you're playing through the start of the level, then it's not so bad.2009-11-06 20:28:00

I really hate boss fights where the only criteria for victory is rattling the R1 button one billion times.
It just isn't good gameplay.

That ceiling grabbing swinging mechanic seems like a very emergent gameplay mechanic that people have latched onto. By emergent I mean that I don't think Mm really ever thought of (or intended) it to be used that way.

I dislike it because it's extremely finickity. I don't mind it if it's for just a short section but I hate going through it screen after screen.

I resent H4H levels, bomb survival levels, " swing across 20 sponges " levels, Jumping survival levels, Vehical levels were you can not controll the vehicle other than turning it on or off. Undetailed objects wich hints about lacking dedication.

I will soon be back, making more edditions to the Chicken mania levels. But Chicken mania 2 will be compleatly diffrent from Chicken mania 1. Wich allthough i put alot of effort on it perhaps had some flaws. But atleast i got 800 plays, some good reviews, Astonishing graphics and sound effects. Even as the game play was ..... not bad but less exciting.

The second part in the feathery war will have a kind of gameplay wich you have rarely or never seen before. Differing compleatly from Chicken mania 1. Varied objectives gameplays and bosses ( Allthough less bosses than CM 1). And of course it will have even better graphics then chicken mania 1 with even more detail. A far more intresting story, a diffrent location, Even more detailed sound effects and the level will be alot more playable in multiplayer ( Allthough CM1 was made for singel players,) But there will be no rewards in the level.....

If you are interested in playing chicken mania 1 simply search for " Chicken mania " And you will see it. my psn is doubletimewa. It has some of the things people counted as annoying though. But i think it is way better than 90 percent of all recent levels made =)
