What to do with old levels...

Archive: 24 posts

Imagine the scenario - you have about 10 or so levels, which you've made throughout the last year. Your earlier ones are still good, but your new ones are so much better. They've all had a lot of plays and attention, but you feel that your older levels are making your newer ones look slightly bad.

Do you:

a) Leave everything as it is. You've still got plenty of space for new levels, people may still play and enjoy the old ones, and it's always interesting to see how creators have improved over time.

b) Go back to those old levels and make them better. Maybe even completely remake them so that they're up the standards of your current levels.

c) Remove the old levels. Don't let them get in the way of the new stuff. You want a level collection you can be proud of.

Reason I'm posting this is because I have a few old levels which I'm just not happy with. Mainly Paint Rate Monitor, as I don't really want a trophy level (even if it is a properly made one) amongst all my others (too many people already know me as the creator who made that rather than for my proper levels). I'd love to remove it from the servers, but there'll always be people who still might want to play it.

Same with Sackmas Time. It's a Christmas level I made last year, and I know a lot of people like it, but I've come so much further as a creator since making it. I'm planning to make another Christmas level this year, and I'm not sure whether to replace the old one or make this as a sequel.

So anyway... discuss.

A) and B)

I fix what is really broken or unreliable most of the time even if it's month after I first published a level. In the case of Japanese Garden I overhauled large parts of it because I never really was satisfied with it, but at the time of publishing it I didn't know how to make it better.

I also find reworking old levels is quite good if you run out of ideas for a new level. It usually gives me plenty of inspiration for a next level.

I guess it depends on how much YOU actually like the level.

If its something with, say 3 stars and 40 hearts, but you like it. Keep it!

If its something with 4 stars and 3000 hearts, but you hate it (ahhem-bomb level-ahhem) that i'd advise getting rid of it.

P.S. Don't think im accusing you NuclearFish of making a bomb level, i know your stuff rocks!

Plus, if its taking up valuable room in the 20 level limit for something more spectacular, sent it to LittleBigHeaven.............or would that be LittleBigHell?

exaclty the same with me, i made a good tutorial level 18k plays but also have my very 1st level from the beta, which is awfull. i choose a) simply becasue i am not a famous creator (unlike you ) and i dont think anyone would notice, and i like to play my old levels now and then. i dont know what it is about early levels but they just have that special feel to them, when everything in lbp was new

PS: Love your lost sig and your dhama icon

Hmmm...it's a tough one really. Think about whether you like them. If you like it then keep it - but if not then it's not really worth the space its taking up is it?2009-11-03 23:05:00

I've been looking at a few creators planets lately, I see that their newer levels are really great but when you go play their older levels the quality just isn't as good. And, you were one of those creators, I think you should go with option C. I don't want to sound rude but the trophy and the sticker levels you have aren't exactly great, I think it brings down the overall quality of your levels, so I say delete those.

Also, are you crazy? Lol, your Christmas level is Amazing! I always play it every now and then, and I definetly think it can stand up to the newer levels. The gameplay and look of the level is just great, it is the best Christmas level on lbp no doubt, please don't delete it!

Also, I don't think you should go with option B, I see it as a waste of time, I think you should forget about the old and focus more on the new.

If really you think there are bad levels you can remove them but don't forget:

-You don't have any rep, you don't "look bad" or "look good". This game isn't a fame thing.

-You have people that might want to replay your level, hence why they hearted it. It's not really cool that a level disappear when you wanted to replay it or show it to some buddy I dunno.

Although I understand what you mean, I wouldn't worry much and leave the levels there unless they are atrociously bad. But then again, I really wonder why you would think it possibly affect you in any way. At worse, those levels will be played again when you put some new ones up and there might be someone liking it.

Well I guess it depends on the level
but I think you should keep the old ones if you still have space.

I don't think that older levels can make negative impression...
It just shows that the creator improved , and it's always interesting to see the evolution (IMO)!

And it's a little sad to remove levels you spend a lot of time on, and that people have enjoyed...

So keep them, or improve them a little if it's possible

I think the answer may really depend on just how 'outdated' the old ones are, and at least personally, I don't think I've played the offending levels.2009-11-04 05:26:00

A and B. They're still something that you made, and unless you're honestly ashamed of it or something, there isn't a real reason to take it down. If you're running out of profile space, i'd make an alternate account to store those levels, because everybody starts somewhere, and its nice to see how a creator has improved over time.2009-11-04 06:57:00

A & B. Right now, I've been debating on trying to revive my "should've-been" series, Fairy Tale. The level is filled with lame props and Mm objects, and it only has about 1-2 minutes worth of playtime. The original story behind was to be complex and long; I even entered one of my story characters into the costume contest! But... it's very calming... and, tbh, idk if I can re-do the whole thing. Not sure right now if I should just make a "remix" level of it and publish it right next to it.2009-11-04 08:40:00

A) Leave it the way it is.

You'll definitely regret changing or removing your old levels after. I sometimes go back into levels I made in November and December of last year just to look at how far I've come as a creator. My early builds of LittleBigMemory were so complicated and unreliable it's almost laughable to see them compared to the complete overhauls I've made since then. But even though it's terrible and hardly works, I'd never delete it because it still represents a part of me, and I'd feel like I was losing some of my hard work, even though it's irrelevant now. But on the other hand, I don't have these published, I keep them on My Moon to look back on from time to time.

Myself, I have created THIS (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=18003) and the rest is crap. I have deleted some, but I wouldn't want to delete more of my levels.2009-11-04 16:19:00

You forgot option d:

Defer all decision making. If your simply not 100% sure on a level then just leave it - it doesn't do any harm being there. If a level really is that bad that you think it tarnishes your published levels page, lock it. If you decide to revamp it later you can. If you get to a point where you run out of space for more published levels then delete it.

Why bother deleting stuff you don't want to be seen when you could just lock it?

I keep all of my levels. It's fun to look back on them to see how you've grown creatively. ^_^2009-11-04 16:41:00

I'm mostly for C, but instead of getting rid of them I just lock them and move them up to the Arctic for safe keeping. I have deleted a few of my very first creations, they were pretty shocking but I did still put a lot of time into them and I wish I'd kept them.

I try to only keep levels published that I actually want people to play.

Also, bar bug fixing, I don't generally rework old sections, it seems pointless, especially in really old levels. People will have played it in its original state and then have forgotten about it. No point changing it I don't think...

Unless...does republishing old levels give them a few more plays?

OK, so if rtm made option D, here's option E:

Publish them locked and copyable, and send the keys to another account, then copy them onto another account, and publish them there, then delete the originals.

I've often thought about doing a revamp of Mulberry Woods. I mean, I don't think it's terrible, but I've learned a lot since I built it and I'd love to see what I could do with it now. However, like xkappax, I find it fun to look back at my levels and see how far I've come, so I'd probably hang onto the original if I did decide to remake.2009-11-04 17:29:00

Thats preety much how I feel. Its very tempting to think about going in and touching up a few things but I think I like to see where I was at...and besides, if you deleted it...what would that say to all the people that left lovely comments on the level and hearted it?

If it really bugs you though, its your level...your choice

I would avoid deleting them if you have the space to spare. You might regret it later. Option B would be nice if you have the time or desire to spare.

As for myself, I think I'm going to recreate my Aperture Science Series using what I learned in the past several months. Yeah, they aren't outdated yet, but I cringe a bit when I see some things... When I do this, I'll probably have both versions published until I run out of space.

Moral of the story: leave them.

If you lock them, you can give away the keys at the end of your newer levels. Perhaps people will be more forgiving if they just played your top notch level.

Or would they be extra disappointed?

I used to have 20 levels, all geting reasonable plays and hearts, then for no reason i decided that they all looked terrible, so i trashed 17 of them and published new ones over the old spots. Its all good though, cause i got them saved in prize bubbles2009-11-05 09:52:00
