Good news! I think.....

Archive: 6 posts

It seems that i only have to spend roughly 20 dollars to fix the thing. I hope.

see, the lens is in working condition. as a matter of fact i think its still in perfect condition. the "stepper motor" doesn't seem to move at all though.

that is caused by one of 2 things (hopefully the first of the two)

1 would be that the motor is simply bad. thats a $20 fix. oo-rah!

the second is that the drive has a bad controller card. that will suck. But i think its the motor!

Well, it seems my ps3's laser just crapped out. I had played it like 4 hours earlier and no problems, but now it just sits there trying to read the disk ( like me trying to read a newspaper without my glasses.)

I suppose i'll end up fixing it myself, seeing as it is way past ye olde warranty date. and it's still gonna cost me about 50-60 bucks to do.

It sucks too. just had a really good idea for stabilizing my hovercraft designs.....

Ouchies... That happened with my old PS2, I had so many disc read errors. Eventually I just sucked it up, cracked the thing wide open (hope you have some tiny screwdrivers), and found the laser lens to be CAKED with grime. A little spritz-and-wipe, and the thing was running like new again.

I have no experience cracking open a PS3, but perhaps, but perhaps, perhaps it's a relatively easy fix, as the PS2 was?
Why do you think it might cost 50-60 bucks to fix it yourself?

Its one of the more common ailment's of this here creature. For some reason the lenses on some of them are somewhat faulty, or just really delicate, and go bad.

50 bucks + who knows how much shipping is the cheapest I could find a replacement part for it.

since my ps3 is well into its 2nd year on my coffee table, i don't really see any way other than that i can afford.

Buuuuut......I haven't cracked the little buggar open to see what particular version of the part I'm looking for, so maybe it'll be something easy to fix.

but not with my luck. I've had to crack open my psp, ps2, send off my 360, and now this. its just bad luck, seeing as I don't allow anyone to touch the systems i have for fear of dueling me (to the pain!) and I'm very careful with my stuff. most of my games still look brand new......

Eh. no worries, I still have my new mmo addiction that is fallen earth. but still. no more sackboy for a while. You can bet I'll still be downloading the content though! It'll just...be a month or three till i can kil.....er....play with sackboy and friends again.

though now that i think of it, the fact that i cant randomly build useless stuff is gonna draw air through a small opening with great vigor

Well, Its 9:19 am. I've been up for close to 20 hours fixing stuff (like my car), and I'm in need of some sleep. Sounds like a perfect time to crack open the ps3 and see whats making it.....not tick.

Update: I don't get it. the thing looks brand new. not a speck of dust to be seen except on a ribbon cable on the outside of the drive. I can't see anything that seems mechanical, so i guess i'm gonna try cleaning it with some camera lens cleaner.

I've checked online about these things, too, and these older ones (gotten just after they stopped being so darned scarce) don't use components that any of the newer ones do. all the parts i can find are used and probably just as broke as mine.....

Update again!

it isn't the laser. what i thought was the disk spinning was teh thing having a fit cause it was reading the same spot on the disk not having a clue what was going on. I hope i can figure out what killed the little bugger. mayhaps its just a loose wire, cause it isnt doing a blasted thing....
