I noticed now, not only is it not automatic, but the video comes up in a pop-up script window after clicking a button. I preferably liked it the old way, but I just wanted to make sure I'm not going insane.

We wanted to reduce the amount of content that needed to be downloaded when loading a page on LBPCentral. A YouTube video can be considered optional - not everyone might want to watch it - so it makes sense to design it so that those who want to watch it can easily do so without forcing those who don't want to watch it from loading it in the first place.

Those who do want to watch it find the fact that the video is right there to watch more convenient than going to the link.

Well, we weren't thinking about the video itself, we were thinking about the extra bandwidth and time required to download the video player and pre-buffer. It's very easy to click the link and click play - it takes, what, two extra seconds? - but for those who don't care about the video or for those pages that contain loads of videos, those two seconds quickly add up and become a hindrance.

If you don't want to watch the video don't press play. It doesn't automatically start after the page loads. Those who do want to watch it find the fact that the video is right there to watch more convenient than going to the link. The client still has to do considerably more loading, instead of simply text it has to load Flash Player. It's one mouse click away in either scenario.

I understand, your wording was just a tad misleading. Don't worry, I'm not one of those people that makes a big deal out of 2 seconds, lol.

Why don't you add a function in user CP to turn videos on and off, like images? It's an interesting option, don't get me wrong, but it's not really as streamlined as I'd like for LBPCentral. Then there's the issue of whether videos should be embedded or not for users viewing the site, not to mention the fact that we would have to find a way to make everyone aware of the option of a regular basis. Plus, there were issues with the way the embed was structured, which I didn't think was consistent with the quality we aim for. Overall, making this new option the only option is a much simpler and more extendable solution, since we don't have to deal with issues from people on both sides of the fold - if there's a problem, we only have to fix it once instead of twice, and there won't be any weird differences between the two sides that we'd have to contend with.

I see your point; I'm a bit narrow minded when it comes to bandwidth issues. Although otherwise, the only beef I have with this is the fact the link doesn't say the name, but sacrifices have to be made in life I guess So, do we leave these open or lock for resolution?

I'm not sure it was ever meant to work in social groups... it would tend to clog the page. The link to the video should suffice there.
