SackMech Official Beta (5/8)

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j294/Jirugameshi/SackMech/SackMechSig.jpg

SackMech is an ongoing project to make a series of levels based on Battletech and Mechwarrior. Drive your mech through 8 varied missions, ranging from infiltration to planetary assault. Each mission has a "Good" or "Bad" outcome depending on how well you follow and perform the orders given to you.

If you wish to participate in the beta, look for the level "SackMech Closed Beta" under PSN Jirugameshi and grab the top of the 5th tree from the left (3rd from the right) for about 10 seconds until you hear a success chime. You will then be able to get the keys for the locked SackMech levels.

Report any bugs, anomalies and problems in this thread and I will try to fix the issues raised. I will also keep this thread updated when any major changes are made (such as new levels/mechs being added).

Thanks to everyone who lends a hand.

There are jetpacks attached to the mech's feet. Use the jetpacks to reach the open cockpit and get inside the mech. Once inside, the cockpit will close and you will get control of the mech.

Move the left analog stick left or right to move the mech left or right.
Hold R1 to fire weapons.
Press X and hold R1 to activate jump jets.
Jump down from the door in the cockpit to exit the mech.

Prologue
Mission 0 : Proving Grounds
Mission 1 : Patrol Duty
Mission 2 : Distress Call
Mission 3 : Intel Infiltration

They look great. I'll try next time I'm on but I'm not hopeful about the key working because of the stupid key bug that hasn't been fixed yet.

I collected a key earlier today to hallm3's Rat Alleys level but that didn't work.

I'll let you know whether or not it works.

I just want to make it perfectly clear...

The ENTIRETY of whether or not this will be worth testing will be decided by whether or not Clan Ghost Bear is involved.

Promise me they'll be involved at least just a little bit, and I'll beta test the heck out of it

However, should our demands not be met, my customized Kodiak will be dropping by to "beta test" your mechs personally.

Lol @Jagrevi :
Unfortunately, to avoid any possible complications due to copyright I have avoided using logos and names that are directly related to Battletech and Mechwarrior within the levels.

I will say this though, the Instructor's voice sound is... Bear.

Ah, you've warmed an old freebirth's heart.
You've got yourself a test pilot.

I've added the Prologue key to the key level.

The Prologue is simply an animated NPC cutscene that will serve as an optional intro to the series. Since it relies heavily on time-critical mechanisms to work, I would like to know if it behaves properly for everyone.

Just wanted to let you know I collected the keys from the beta level but only the first 2 levels unlocked.

Anyway I played them and although the designs are awesome I had real difficulty controlling them. They just seemed to have a mind of their own and both levels broke. The first level where you have to jump on the enemies I did exactly that and they broke but when I got to the end ( after a lot of trouble ) it said I'd failed even though I made sure I did everything.

The second level broke worse at the lift part. I kept shooting the enemy but it shoved me back off the edge and I couldn't right it again. I died and respawned at the start then blew the bridge. Then a chopper appeared and shoved it's way into the bay with the mech so I shut the doors on it and crushed it but it fell to pieces and left debris all over the bay shooting plasma everywhere and the mech was ruined and I couldn't get another one. I gave up at that point. Sorry.

Alright. I've finally had a breakthrough to get rid of that pesky mech handling problem.

I've replaced the playable mechs in all the missions with the new versions.

Here is a rundown of the changes :

Improved leg strength and stability.
Tighter and faster walking cycle.
Improved backward walking speed.
Additional machine gun to target ground units.
Improved jump jet handling.

I'd appreciate it if you guys could give it a spin and give me feedback on the new handling.

UPDATE :
Mission 4 has been added to the list. You can find the key in the SackMech Closed Beta level.

Tried the open beta stage you have published and it was fun! Sometimes the level felt a bit sparse though.

Didn't know how to get the keys at the time so I'll have to get back to you on the other levels in the beta you have published at a later date.

Finished playing them all.

The first stage was good, no problems.

The second stage is the one I was writing about in the previous post, it was publicly playable at one point. I didn't understand why I was going up towers to turn on the turrets, could this be explained somehow?

The third stage was smart, getting to pilot the enemy mech you had previously fought. The problem I had is I couldn't finish the level because I didn't understand how to get pass the electrified red gates in the security system. I tried everything! The only thing I can think of is you have to go through the plasma-filled corridor to the right of the security system to press a switch or something, but if that's what you had to do it isn't clear and is far too difficult.

The fourth stage was decent, lots going on. Your view is often blocked by the buildings in the foreground which caused problems, I kept getting caught on things because I couldn't see what I was doing.

Overall I had fun playing the levels, but I wasn't always sure why I was doing what I was doing. In the second level maybe it could be made more clear that your main objective is to capture an enemy mech which you then use in the third level to infiltrate the stronghold.

[...]The second stage is the one I was writing about in the previous post, it was publicly playable at one point. I didn't understand why I was going up towers to turn on the turrets, could this be explained somehow?Well, the enemy invaded one of your bases and deactivated the defenses, so you're reactivating them and driving them out basically.

The third stage was smart, getting to pilot the enemy mech you had previously fought. The problem I had is I couldn't finish the level because I didn't understand how to get pass the electrified red gates in the security system. I tried everything![...]You simply have to stay between the red gates and wait for the entrance to move to the other side of the wall on the outer ring. From there you can reach the inner ring on the other side of the red gates. I'll try to see what I can do to make it more obvious.

The fourth stage was decent, lots going on. Your view is often blocked by the buildings in the foreground which caused problems, I kept getting caught on things because I couldn't see what I was doing.Hmmm, what were you getting caught on? Was it the flying enemies? Normally the foot soldiers and cars that are in the way shouldn't cause much trouble. I might remove the foreground buildings, but then it would feel a lot less like you're walking through an urban environment.

Overall I had fun playing the levels, but I wasn't always sure why I was doing what I was doing. In the second level maybe it could be made more clear that your main objective is to capture an enemy mech which you then use in the third level to infiltrate the stronghold. Thanks! Well, actually the objective is to capture the enemy dropship at the end, which is the same one you start the next mission in.

I have a fairly comprehensive backstory for the levels, but I wanted to keep the level flow simple since I know many players don't like having too much story inside of the levels themselves. The level descriptions contain some more text from the dispatch officer which explains a little more what the missions are about.

There is also an intentional lack of information in the early levels because, since you are a low ranking soldier, you don't get to learn everything that goes on. As you progress through the missions, you gain a higher rank and trust, so you get to have more information on what's going on.

In short, I want to represent the experience of going from a newbie cadet who simply follows orders to gradually becoming a "hero" of sorts (and eventually something more, but I won't spoil it just yet). The attitude of the other characters towards you also gradually changes along the way, going from condescending, to respectful, to admiring.
