A Gaming world with one format

Archive: 3 posts

Well, I've just been thinking. We all "know" that having multiple consoles creates some sort of competition for bettering the console (PS3 getting more PSN friend space, trophies, ect. to compete with Xbox, ect.) However, I've been thinking for a few days- what if one day, we don't have each machine have it's own disc format, and instead operate more like DVDs or such?

So, let's say that each console manufacturer made a machine- gaming discs could operate on every machine, the only difference would be quality and features presented.

Think to DVD players. They all play DVDs despite being made by different companies- the features and quality of the machine itself is all that differentiates it.

So what if video games were like this one day? One format playable on all machines, just features and quality different? I believe video games are the only medium that have upwards of three formats playable on only one machine- think how odd it would be if you needed to buy a Sony DVD player to play Sony movies?

I unno, thoughts on this?

Gah, I would try and find it if I have time, but back in the 80s/90s this was attempted to be pushed forward with one company spearheading the idea. I'm sure somebody will back me up on this.2009-10-31 14:39:00

it would be a crazy idea because then there would be even more war why have that machine when you can have this one. then saying its all the same. and are machines going to be able to play online with each other etc. it would be weird.2009-10-31 14:47:00
