Adding music level music to your story level

Archive: 4 posts

Adding "music level" music to your level. This is something I am messing with... perhaps some of you can add your experience to it.

One section of my level I wanted to have some turn of the century music for atmosphere. I've created a 1920s speakeasy (what underground bars were called during US Prohibition) with a player piano.
All the "music levels" I've seen so far level require you to board a vehicle and ride through the level to hear the music.

I found a copyable music level with Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer."
I copied the level onto my moon. I then deleted everything on the level with the exception of the proximity switch bar that was on the vehicle and the speaker/proximity switch blocks. I cut and permanently pasted the proximity switch bar that was on the vehicle in the center of my level (where the player piano will be placed)... I then ensured the player speaker/proximity switch blocks were all glued together and placed shopping cart wheels on the bottom of every tenth block (like a giant multiwheeled train box car). I think there were 221 4x4 (smallest scale) music blocks.
I made a one thick layer one block high glass floor to set the wheeled music blocks on. (not sure if this helped but I thought it would reduce friction)

I then attached a piston so that it would pull (pushing didn't work very well) the music blocks from right to left past the proximity switch bar. It took a little fiddling but I got the speed right. Obviously you would only be able to hear the music within a limited range of where the speaker switches are activated... thus this is only a one room music contraption. If I remember right (I was up all night putting this together and experimenting with it) the effect is the farther you are away from the player piana the quieter the music.

I'll try and publish it later tonight so you can check it out. I'll give credit to the original person who went to all the trouble to make the music blocks etc. This music contraption is hidden behind a layer so the player will never see it. I may make this into a multi track fun level (basically by raising and lowering the the glass floors, each floor being a different music track) that you can win a key too after you complete the story level. I was really pleased with how it sounded after I was done. Actually sounds like an old player piano that needs slight tuning).

Something else I will be experimenting with is mounting the blocks to a very large spinning disk... so that as the circle spins it passes all the blocks infront of the proximity switch bar. Not sure if this has been tried before but thought I would share.

That sounds pretty cool, i'll be checking it out later!

This was basically the idea behind my 'Music Shop' too, the ability to give the player a limited 'Custom' soundtrack, check it out if you are in need of some more tunes!

There's also i template '16 Beat Bar' at the end of the tutorial in my 'Music Shop,' it's pretty fun to play around with and make your own loops!

I have nothing to offer in terms of composing the actual music, but I've always wanted to work out the logic behind it. A_Morton - have you been composing anything lately? You are already on my friends' list, so I may be in touch.2009-10-30 18:39:00
