Totem pole challenge

TOTEM POLE CHALLENGEheatseekr66

This is the level that i came up with after having the idea of getting close to simulating the act of balancing something in your hand like a broom or whatever. I would like to think that i got pretty close.

The object o0f the game is to balance the totem pole for as long as you can using a 3 way switch, imagine it as being the same as balancing something in your hand, when you pull the switch one way, the bottom of the pole moves that way. This level is pretty hard, so since some people might fail really fast, it rewards a lot of points, very fast.

I would like some feedback on this level, F4F. I will put some screenshots up later.

Sounds interesting. I really wonder how you stabilized the whole thing, given the fact that directional 3-Ways create "hard" stops and turns in movement, which might not suit the task at hand. I'll give it a try later on today.
Just to clarify: Is this a survival or a point challenge? Survival, I guess?

Well, yeah the hard stops were sort of a problem, i tried to get the strength of the pulls and pushes right, but it is still very hard, though i do have a couple ideas of how to make the whole thing work better which i will try when i get the time, i guess i would consider this a beta of sorts.

And yeah, it is a survival challenge.

Just played it. It's a nice, fresh and original concept (at least in LBP). The downside is your degree of difficulty. With one playthrough during between 1 second and 30 seconds, it just isn't really motivating. Also, you could improve the visuals.

As for the tech side of things: You've got a cool concept. Improve it! You could add springs with balanced strength settings to keep the stick in place. You could replace the strange stick by a real Totem (thick layer wood with history pack totem stickers + cutout shape). Work with invisible connectors to stabilize the whole thing. I would also make the platform visible; some piece of rock, a buffalo... build an interesting platform, so that the player actually sees the device which he can control directly, instead of just showing the result.

I'm currently working on a "positive-neutral-negative" speed switch. This might just be what you need for your survival. A 3-Way switch that can control direction and directional speed of any contraption. I'll let you know if I manage to get that thing working.

So i took a lot of your advice and redid a lot of the level. First, the difficulty is a lot easier now, i also redid the totem pole and revamped the visuals on the level, its a lot better now.2009-10-31 02:10:00

reading the title i thought it was a game where you stack totem segments and the higher you get the more points await

quik someone go make that O_O sounds fun

anyway this sounds just as interesting...kinda.

Littlebigdude, that idea for a stacking level is really good. I took your idea and made another version of this level where you have to stack the pieces and i think it turned out really well, thanks for the inspiration.2009-11-01 01:14:00
