I don't know what you mean about timing out?

If you have a backup and copied the backup to the right spot it should work.

ok - so your game save data corrupted AND your network is timing out.

Well, the network shouldn't affect the game data. If you connect it will run whatever save data is on the HD.

If you copied your backup to the right folder it should work.

ok - not sure how to deal with that. I only thought that LBP used the game data folder to keep it's info so if that file is replaced it should have what it needs to run..... anyone else know what's going on here?2009-10-29 23:32:00

Ok, let's clear this thing up.

There's "Game data" and "Saved data".
You can manually back up save data (your profile) easily. Game data (patches and DLC) however cannot be backed up manually. It still is possible to back it up but only in doing an entire PS3 back-up with the function of the same name.

So, what happened? You started your game and what did it said? It tried to load your profile but failed? (saved data corrupted) or it's something else?

i went to play on lbp and it said you need to download patch 1.19 which i had already downloaded, the game data had been delete by my brother who read what a member on this site had said about ways to get glitches, i had to delete my save data coz it was corrupted, i loaded up the back up and it changed itself into a blank pod + naked sack, no moons just king,2009-10-30 11:11:00

Ok, so what happened is this:

Your brother erased the game data (NEVER do that). When you started the game, it did not detect the game data since it was previously erased. The game then proceeded and making you redownload it. Now it's possible that reinstalling the game data and loading your save corrupted it. In fact it is what happened since you lost your stuff.

Now what you should do is start a new save/profile.
