Sound FX wishlist

Just thinking... we've got access to a lot more sound effects than we have music tracks, but for a while now I've been a bit disappointed that we can 'hear' some great sound effects but we can't actually use them.

I'm thinking mainly of some of the sounds when you apply a hazard tool to materials. For example, have you listened to the sound of electrifying a material? Even better, listen to it when you unlethalise electricity. It's brilliant!

It's strange how these small 1-second sound effects could be put to use in our levels. Yeah, I know we're always asking for stuff, but a cool sound effects pack would be uber-groovy. We have burp sounds and match-strike sounds, we have stampede sounds and gunshot sounds, but please please please, let's have some sounds effects: proper 'laser' sounds, perhaps some speech samples ("yeah", "no", "yikes" etc.), and let us use those sound effects we can hear but not use.

*phssseeeouuuw* <<< laser sound

Agreed. Many of the sounds we have in DLC thus far are great, but the more the merrier.2009-10-29 22:44:00

I love that buzzing electrify/de-electrify sound! I'd love that one. The gas one would be cool for small explosion sounds, it's sort of a deep pop.

Great suggestion MrsSpookyBuz.

I'd really like some more variation on material breaking sounds. The ico pack has some of the best but a little more variety on breaking wood, stone, glass - that kind of stuff, would be cool.

Y'know...This is probably just me, but after buying the monsters, history and MGS packs, I have almost almost all the sounds I need and have been wanting for ages.

I've actually been composing things which are hopefully quite new to LBP - Ambience tracks, experimenting with proximity to create eerie echoes. It's a lot of fun, especially with headphones, but there's one thing I really would love to see (or hear?) - more music sound samples. Really, we need some. I would love to here vibes, glockenspiels, African percussion, could create some awesome things...

...But if we're focusing purely on sound effects, then I would so love to hear better explosion sound effects

Maybe an option to add your own effects to the sounds would be brilliant, too - reverb, delay (echo), phlange etc. Maybe a more technically difficult option to add, but hey, we can dream. *sigh*

More nature sounds would be nice. Especially once water arrives seagull, gently lapping waves, crashing waves and a bubbly bubble sound effect would be really useful.2009-10-29 23:14:00

TBH, the custom effects thing wouldnt' be too bad. I've played around with such things for funzies and the whole thing is quite intuitive. I mean, if you have the technical knowledge to go with them then I'm sure you could knock together some cool stuff in seconds, because you'd know what to do. The rest of us could simply mess around until we hit a "ZOMG, that sounds AMAZING!!!!" moment. You get instant feedback so anyone can use it.

I just want more sound effects in general, of all kinds. There just simple aren't enough. And the volume control please. Always the volume control - half the sounds we do have can't be heard over music, so what is the point in them?

Absolutely. Ambient ocean sounds would be wonderful. Bubbles? *No comment* lol

Man, I thought I was the only person who noticed this! Horrible mixes on the sound effects. I know Mm recently hired a new designer, so hopefully we'll be seeing some great things in the future... but I have little faith in that given Mm's track record with the sounds they've given us so far (especially all the repeat sounds that vary little from others).

Those lethalize sounds would be great and I've wished for these since the beginning. We really do need more sounds to enhance our options, and they simply aren't difficult enough to make for Mm to not offer them to us and get off their duff's about it. I could record and create a ton of sound effects in a few weekends... it's ridiculous.

Totally agree - have you heard the chainsaw or helicopter sounds? Mess about with the pitch and they're really cool - but only if you have no music blaring out at the same time.

Hey, let's go the whole hog:

"Dear Mm,

Hello! On behalf of 18.6 trillion users, I would like to request a music/sound editor function. No frills are required, just something usable and tweakable for all us sound-hounds.

What should it be like? Well, think of 'Cubase' software from Steinberg, without the need for a PhD in Sonic Physics. Think of 'Reason' from Propellerhead, without including those billions of wires that we already have to think about already with the switches. Think about the E-Jay series... --- no, wait, forget about the E-Jay software.

Thanks very much. Tell Danny to PM everyone to let us know when it's ready.

Cheers,
*signed by* 18.6 trillion users"

You're suggesting we amass a fanbase that is several hundred times larger than the current population of the planet?

...It just might be crazy enough to work.

Also, I would like to see more futuristic sounds, or more sounds involving humans (i.e. beatboxing or choir notes).

I love the chainsaw effect. In setbacks I have the section where the "hazard" is cogs that munch up sackboy if he falls in them. I went to great pains to create the sound effect of the chainsaw screaming as it did so, using some speed controls and a bit of behind the scenes logic. Sounded awesome.

Went to test it properly and just had to scrap it because the music drowned it out

PS, all you need now is 18.6 trillion signatures. Here ya go, here's one to get you going - you're practically there now

Can we have a beatbox choir music track?

You didn't find that one in the beta?

/sarcasm

I, too, have been annoyed by the fact that sounds can't be heard over music. I've tried setting multiple speakers to play at once (to increase the sound), to varied results.

Heck yes. I'd even be willing to donate my skills to making these sounds.

Yes, I beatbox. People say I'm good. I also have an audio program that allows me to record stuff (though I'm not sure how).

Yes, but different. Just plain sound effects you can stick on fish, for instance.

There is a sound series that is desperately missing in this games sound effect arsenal:

Crowd rabble.
Just, the room tone of a public place. The sound of voices babbling.
I'd love a few of these. A restaurant one, complete with the clanking of silverware against dishes.

A HUGE crowd sound, like it's at a giant stadium venue, and then a smaller room sound.

I'm not kidding when I say that I would use these in every single level I make.

I built a F1 car that makes the most epic sound ever. Use rollerskate wheels (yellow ones) with a rocket, try it, it sounds cool

If only we could capture + edit sounds, if only [gets high hopes for future update so we can]

If I can't find the sound I want I either combine sounds or bang different materials together, that usually does the trick 2009-11-02 21:43:00

I also want them to do a speaker full of all the create mode sounds like the gluing noise the hazards noises, that funny noise you get when you cant do something .etc

I'd like to see more generic mechanism sounds.

Clangs, whirring, gear changes, motors revving etc

After watching Plan 9 from Outer Space last night, I realised LBP doesn't have that cheesey eerie background sound, I think it's a singing saw. That so belonged in the Monster pack!2009-11-03 11:23:00

It's actually a theremin, often mistaken for a singing saw. It shows up in all the good sci-fi movies, heck.... even the Dr. Who theme uses it.

Here's a couple of video's for those of you that don't know what a theremin is.

Here's a link showing how a theremin works.

I would like some more loops!
Loops are great building blocks to create an atmosphere
(by layering them and changing their pitch)
and some more generic mechanism sounds like asbestos said, you can never have enough of those!

I think we may have covered this in a really old thread, I seem to remember the result being that this worked ONLY if the speakers were at different pitches, so you just need to slide the analogue stick really slightly to the left or right so the change isn't audible, and you can layer the sound volume. I THINK, not sure, but I think that's the case.

Not entirely on topic but it's kind of relevant...

All the sound effects on the LBP version are done separately, so whereas now you click on a speaker, place it, then tweak it to which sound you want...on the PSP, the type of sound it is is stated in a header, and then all the individual sounds are laid out in the pop-it.

So it's done like the materials now. For example the header is 'stone' and then it has all the different types under it

Personally I think it's a good way of doing it. If you know the exact sound you're after it is much easier to get to. However, if you're unsure, it will probably be a little more effort seeing as you'll have to lay loads down to try them all instead of just having to lay one down and then tweak it like you can do now.

Hope all that makes sense.
