XP, contests, and the like - HAVE YOUR SAY. 4000xp...

Archive: 9 posts

So as you may know, I have made a few contests recently. The reception was overwhelming, and everyone was eager to donate a bit of XP to fund them. However, I know have a contest pot of...er...9000xp. Which is quite a lot, seeing as I only have enough ideas in the run of "find the word" contests for one more contest (it's a good 'un, I think, the next one). So, here's what I was thinking:

I make the next find-the-word contest a 5000xp contest.
The remaining 4000xp goes towards a different contest.

Here's the problem - what contest should the second one be? I want YOUR say, what would you like in a non-LBP contest (if it were LBP, then I could just get a "Win XP in a contest" item.)? Do you want a photography contest, a scavenger hunt one, a writing one, a graphical one, a real-world one, a rapping one, a create a joke for a certain punchline one, what do you want in a contest?

I like the sound of a photography contest even though I'm only an amateur snapper who just uses auto-focus all the time. It would still be interesting.

Best to limit the size though if you go with that. We wouldn't want photos spreading across the whole page and more where you have to keep scrolling. Probably a similar size to the caption contest would be about right. What do you think ?

Are there many photographers here? If it is not photography then I think we should do some rap battles in tournaments and such. The 'Lets make a rap' thread is very fun/ 2009-10-29 19:24:00

If you did a photography one you should make it really obscure and say you can only take the photo of behind your desk, but make it really really awesome.2009-10-29 19:31:00

I actually was leaning more toward scavenger hunt at first... but seeing how I have a love for the camera, I like the sound of photo contest.

The only issue I have with it being a photo contest is I would not enter as I currently do freelance photography for $$ in real life. ...not full time, but more than enough success to warrant exclusion.

However, I would be more than happy to be a judge.

Hm, well, 4000xp is quite a lot. It could sustain a weekly contest for at least two months, and could handle 4 well-funded one-off contests. So it is possible we could have a weekly photography one for, say, 500xp a week, and a 1k xp one-off for some other contest. I like the sound of that, though if I do run out of xp for the photography I'd have to ask for more funding 2009-10-29 19:32:00

Possibly make the photography one bi-weekly rather than weekly? Either way is fine, but sometimes weather is a factor over a shot and getting enough time to get a good pic takes awhile unless you have quite a bit of time at your disposal. Plus doing it bi-weekly might get you a few extra entries over the weekly one.

I am hoping it is not a contest about a pic someone HAS done, but a new one created in that time period regarding the theme or whatever.

The real pic can be hosted elsewhere and a smaller one viewable here with a link posted on the contest thread.

FWIW - I do like the idea of several smaller contests than these massive XP ones that you are currently doing.

Yeah, bi-weekly is what I'd go for, definitely. I'd also want to maybe participate myself Also, I wasn't expecting it to be such a big pot! It's not all given out in one chunk, FYI, a certain fraction of it (usually 150xp or so) goes to everyone who cracks or clue or part of a clue, and 1/2 of the total pot to whoever cracks the entire thing.2009-10-29 19:55:00
