New Level Series - Myth based

Archive: 25 posts

So after finishing Chroma Stone I wasn't sure if I was going to do some free standing levels or jump into another series.

I've been working on a level that will probably become another level series. Depends on how this one goes.

The idea for the series is to take different cultures myths that include dragons of one sort or another and tweak them to fit the LBP universe. The first one I'm working on is based on an Egyptian myth and so far it's going pretty well.

I've hit a bit of a snag with a cinematic cutscene I'd like to do and I'm working through that problem at the moment. I'm also trying my hand at the 3dD/backscratch glith in some places.

Thought I'd share some teaser pics though Not sure how long it will be before it's ready but it's well underway.

Wow, those shots look great! You've got a lot of toys in the game to work with too in, especially with the history pack. I'd love to see a Greco-Roman mythology level from you!

Good luck with the background glitch, these days it's the major cause of headaches for me. I can't help but use it - I have to use it - I just have to! But it's a nightmare to use.

When I get some time I'll put together a comprehensive tutorial on using the glitch, because I've had to figure a lot out on my own, and I haven't seen such a thing done justice to yet. For now, if you have any questions/concerns/problems about the background glitch, let me know, I'm sure I can help work it out.

other than that, all I have to say is keep doing what you're doing, I can't wait for the new stuff!

Seems like an interesting project.

I'm assuming it's ok for us to suggest myths to cover? Some Mythical Dragons I think would give variety to the series ...

Biblical Mythology - Leviathan.

We tend to use the word "Leviathan" now a days to mean any "big sea-monster", but it is a specific biblical dragon in Judeo-Christian mythology. The reason I specifically think this one should be included is that it is primarily aquatic in nature, which would give some very nice variety to the series - and give you an excuse to create some great water mechanics when the time comes.

Here's an image of Leviathan...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9d/Destruction_of_Leviathan.png/482px-Destruction_of_Leviathan.png

Just to be clear, he's the one at the bottom.

Vedic Mythology - Vritra.

Now, I think Vritra is also worth doing, not because of the original mythology, but because of the later adaptation where Vritra actually swallows Indra, the God of War whole until the other gods force him to spit him out.

I think this would be a great opportunity for an "inside the monster" type level. Again, making sure these levels keep variety to them, and I think Vritra has some very fun things you can play around with.

Here's Vritra ...

Cool suggestions

I hadn't thought of those yet so I'll have to think about them. I do have an idea for an Aztec one (based on real myth) and a modern/digital myth (with some creative license) similar to the concept of Gremlins in machinery.

I'd love to do a Greco Roman one... perhaps a Hydra myth or something... must look into that as well

Thanks for the suggestions

Sounds really cool, and looks great so far. Then again, when it comes to dragons I'm a tad biased...

Best of luck with the projects.

An idea I havent't seen is Incan. I'm positive there is some great mythology involving The Incans And I think that the Mountain top cities would be very interesting. Plus I'd love to see some Llamas! But you may not want to have two south american civilisations in one series as some people tend to get them confused.
I know the differences though

Incas
Peruvian
Andes Mountains
Llamas!
Lots of gold

Aztecs
Mexican
Jungles/ deserts
Crazy sacrificing

I want the one with Quetzalcoatl so that would be Aztec. Incan could be cool though - I'll have to look them up. 2009-10-28 23:03:00

I can't remember what that is but I know I've heard of it before. It reminds me of The Medieval: Total War, expansion. I liked the Tlaxcalans because they were orange

Quetzalcoatl is a feathered dragon from Aztec myth.

@ Littlebigdude805 - was it Apophis (Egyptian Apep, Apepi)? The winged snake?

It's based on Egyptian mytholgy. There's a serpent/dragon that tries to swallow the sun every night when it travels to the underworld. You can read about it on wiki I'm trying to stay very close to the myth but may have to take a few creative liberties depending on if I can pull off some things.2009-11-04 16:57:00
