Lone Ninja Episode 6: A Thousand Lives A Day - spotlighted!

Archive: 23 posts

This is the last episode of my Lone Ninja series. it picks up right where the last left off.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=902&pictureid=7899 Izanami-dera, front entrance.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=902&pictureid=7896 Shrine interior, using background glitch to create a Bishamonten statue.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=902&pictureid=7895 Izanami-dera reflection pond, water-lilies included. Thanks, Vera Bee!

I started Lone Ninja because for all the ninja levels out there that require you to platform with unerring accuracy, there were vanishing few that let you actually BE a ninja, in the anime sense - over the top moves, magical Japan-based storyline, so on.

Now, it ends. Expect a few bubble secrets, my slowly-improving visuals, and oh yeah...BOSS FIGHTS. The fights are designed to be tricky, but not necessarily difficult. I originally had a bunch of ideas about making the fights tougher...but then I remembered that my initial intent was to create something everyone could play. Expert players should experience no problem. The rest of us can charge headlong into danger and win through dying a lot. And after that, two different endings.

I have 3-5% more material/creature thermo. Fixes are definitely appreciated, and I'll consider any changes I can a) understand while not b) alienating the "core audience".

Finally: I do not plan to abandon the series: I am going to redo the older levels, especially 1, 2 and 3, to incorporate things I've learned. Especially thermo (I'm looking at YOU, Episode 3!) Any discussion of what you'd add, subtract, or leave in the old levels is welcome here.

Went in and played it - no problems whatsoever. In fact, the room with the furniture was, I think, better. Having the one guy with the brain moving across the bottom was better than the previous design. It just seemed to flow better and both layers worked.

Great job! 5 stars and a heart!

Thanks, Ccubbage! Your help on this has been absolutely essential, and I'm glad you liked the changes. I also think it was better idea to NOT kill players who get thrown upwards...instead, scolding them for abandoning the fray.2009-10-28 04:05:00

Ah, I'm glad you brought that up! Yup, I ended up there a few times and throught, "you know, this would be a great place to hide a few point bubbles"

Done. Maybe a hidden prize. The hardcores will just get points for it, but some people actually thank me for giving away monsters and super-moves.2009-10-28 06:25:00

Yay! Lighting Goddess likes my level!

ION, I'm putting a Kunoichi cut-scene in as a secret. I initially intended the player to meet her in Yomi as a vengeful spirit, but alas...thermo did not comply.

I don't know what the old furniture problem was, but I got a problem at that section that stopped me continuing. The item on the table vanished and I could'nt use it to kill the enemy in the center. The two chairs were fine, I killed them enemies no problem, but that thing on the table never came back after I used it once.2009-10-28 17:50:00

I can't tell you how crushingly depressed that news makes me. I love throwing the furniture around, but it has behaved strangely online since I created it. I pulled the level and completely rebuilt the objects, using dark matter and fewer moving parts. I have heard FAR less complaint about random pains like what you experienced, but...

I'm at a complete loss. The lantern ("thing on the table") is CONNECTED to the enemy above it, and also connected to dark matter...so it shouldn't have broken off. Even if a new enemy had failed to emit, the backstage area is further designed to let you out of the "danger room" after 3-5 seconds, if no enemies are present in the room with you. So how you got an enemy without a piece of furniture, or were not let out of the room, is beyond me.

I want to fix it, but outside of a corrupt file of some kind, I can't even explain the problem. I'd be interested to know if the same bug happened to you again, but of course, I shan't try to compel you to play again just to test it out. I've already had playtesters all over the thing. Thanks for giving me a try, though.

Anybody else? And what's the opinion on this bug? Should I replace the room with some platforming? I've heard at least one person say, "This is pretty unique for LBP"...but there might be a reason for that.

I loved that area, it'd be a shame. If you're having problems with the central enemy only maybe just use the outer two, rather than jettison the entire section.

Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed this, and again all the ninja moves are just inherently hilarious the way you implement them. That huge boss shooting two lines of plasma was another highlight for me too, a nice mechanic there. Looking forward to seeing what comes next from you now the series is completed!

Thanks for stopping in, julesyjules.

As for the room, I'm gonna wait and see for now. So far, Grantos (a forum level reviewer...ARGH) is the only person who has run into this issue. I wonder if maybe there are just too many physics calculations in that room, because even before, the error seemed to be random.

The mighty CuzFeeshe recommended I use more dark matter behind the scenes to "strengthen" enemy moving parts. I did as he bade...but I gotta admit, having a weird error I can't define makes me feel pretty dumb. If the problem IS that LBP can't keep track of moving parts that well in online mode...would slowing ALL the monsters down, just a little bit, help any?

EDIT: I have added prize bubbles since CuzFeeshe made that comment. In case an overtasked physics engine is the issue, I've now glued those bubbles down. If it crashes for someone else, I'll pull the bubbles.

If it crashes after THAT, I'll cry.
A lot.
Like a girl.
A little one.

EDIT AGAIN: Have played again after glue-downs. Could not duplicate error. Decided to have beer and play something else for a while.

It might just be a random thing Coyote_blue, i definetly will have another try and see if I come across it again. But I seem to be the only one 2009-10-29 23:56:00

I think definately using dark matter helped - I have been unable to break it. Changing it to dark matter definately strengthened the connection of the furniture winches. But, if the furniture hits the enemy is it possible for the furniture to separate from the winch, thus possibly causing something not to destruct with the brain? Possibly. Maybe just see if it's possible for the furniture, under some angle, could impact the enemy. If so, make the mag switch radius slightly bigger so the furniture never ACTUALLY touches the enemy.

Keep in mind, also - I've even seen MM level mechanics break periodically (GrantosUK understands this - little things like this have happened to him also). The physics in LBP make it possible to break. If it works virtually all the time, that is probably fine.

Yeah, things break at random, I would'nt worry about it to much. The beast chase in Mars 3 stutters for some reason now, it only started doing it a couple of days after publishing and I can't work out why its doing it at all. You know, this game irks me at times lol.

I'll have a play the next time I get on the PS3, I loved the visuals and style until I got stuck, and really enjoyed the rest of the series so I have no doubt I'll like this one to

No it happened to me too Grant the first time I played it. I killed the outer enemies with the chairs and the enemies on the front layer and then all that was left in the room was the middle enemy and the table. Like you I had no lantern to throw at it so had to quit the level.

I played it again later and it worked ok. It must be a bit temperamental.

Well, if it's just the lantern, and not a guaranteed fail, I can still hopefully tweak it. Because it shoots straight up, there might be a higher percentage chance of the "come loose" phenomenon Ccubbage is referring to.

I'd hate to have to lose the collisions entirely - it's fun to watch the hits connect, and generate random spinning and crunching. But yeah - just the lantern? Doable.

EDIT: Lantern now triggers enemy death just before making contact. Hope that settles it.

Nothing more I can add. Loved it before, still love it now.

One of the most involving series' on LBP. I now have a serious fetish for throwing furniture about.

Well done. Another 18.6 stars and 4.3 hearts, and tagged with 'Imperious'.

Thanks, Dame Spooky. I have also won my Worth It prize: a Japanese player named "gurichan" came through on 1p. When she got to the graveyard, she saw that I had placed a bowl of rice with hashi (chopsticks) in it, which is a customary offering for the dead (and which is why it's rude for the living to leave hashi stuck in their own food). She took a picture of herself next to it and left it for me.

A Japanese person left me an attaboy for being culturally accurate. I need no other praise. (But I'll take it. )

Yes, but your whining was very thorough. And you gave me a square p-switch, which turned out to be a lot more important than I'd imagined.2009-11-03 03:06:00
