Crystal Maze

Crystal MazeB_M
Hello there. Thought I'd just tell you about my level I've made. I took all my inspiration from an old TV show called "Crystal Maze".
all
The point in the show was to collect crystals and the more crystals you collected the more stuff you got at the end. Though the show was a team game and you'd select a team member to do each task, I couldn't think of a good way of doing it like that I just made it pretty much a single player one. Let me know what you all think of it

Used to love crystal maze

Good idea for a level concept you have there.

I'll try to remember to play it in a while

You've get a pretty good grasp of the fundamentals of gameplay. I liked that you had several "survival challenges" linked to gether, so that failing one did not automatically end the level. Moving checkpoints worked well.

I'd suggest, from here, moving on to pistons. There are a couple of things, like elevators, that just work better if you can control their movement with a stiff piston - then, you don't need to resort to a glass box banging around in an elevator shaft. Though of course, sometimes it's more fun to drop a glass box down an elevator shaft.

I think the bomb walk can be shorter. I thought the idea was great, but once I found out exactly how to hold the left stick in place, I was just waiting for it to be done - holding steady was all I needed to do.

Overall, pretty good first outing. Let me know what you make next.

I can't seem to get the piston dead straight the lift seems to go off at a slight angle, got any pointers on how to get it to travel straight please?2009-11-06 17:54:00

Yep!
Set the Grid to small. Line up the elevator to the grid (this just means, select the elevator, move it right one bump and back, then up one bump and back). Then, start the piston, grid on, at the wall you're gluing to. It should line up with a vertical white line. Follow the line to the elevator.

thanks for that, have sorted it out now, had a little issue with the elevator smashing the block I put in to stop it going back down, but managed to sort it out by lowing the strength of the piston. Many thanks for the tips2009-11-29 18:04:00

Not a problem. Send a PSN message if you ever hit the wall in Create Mode...if I've got the time, Leerdammer makes it pretty easy for me to pop in and have a look at whatever's enraging you.2009-12-02 01:03:00

Just played your Crystal Maze, and loved your ideas. I only got 1 crystal though! One thing which might have helped would be more instruction on what you had to do, as on a couple of the challenges I died before I even knew what was happening.

I liked the dramatic exiting of the life point each time you started a new challenge!

hey,

just finished playing, got only 2 crystals, so going to go back and try again!!!
really like the design of the level, each area looks different....

i'm gonna go section by section now...
the first crystal, like you said, is tricky to get off, maybe you could add a jetpack with a very small radius to get it off?
the bomb walk was pretty innovative, and the medieval section was perfect... really liked it alot!!
the futuristic section looks really cool
ocean part was the best of them all

if ure doing f4f, plz try me level: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=19145

Second place
Got all crystals, but wasn't able to get all points at the same time due to them falling out of the dome.

It's not the prettiest level out there, but it is incredibly fun to play.
The challenges are easy (which is good; players won't quit of frustration) and varied.
The visuals and the challenges match the selected theme, which adds atmosphere.

Suggestions:
-Make it visually more attractive.
-More/harder challenges.
-Teleport system (not necessary, but it would make for nice transitions between areas).

:star::star::star::star: + hearted.

Thank you all for the feed back.

I can't say I know of making a teleport system, is it in one of the level packs, as I only have the metal gear pack?

I believe with the new updates you can activate a checkpoint via switches, then next time sackboy dies, he will appear at the most recently activated checkpoint.

So maybe a proximity switch before the challenge which activates the checkpoint after it.

ah ok that sounds good

Well I've made a few more tweaks, like putting a jet pack at the end of the raft. I've also endit the dome at the end so it's easier to rack up the point combos. Give it a go and let me know what you think.

Thanks

Alright, I used to love the crystal maze when I was younger, used to watch reruns of it all the time on Challenge Tv and bravo

Anyways, your level ;

The good stuff:

- Good core understanding of what would go into a successful crystal maze remake.
- Effective one life systems in place that mean you get to keep going. A lesser creator would have made the whole level one life and be done with it (which is actually what happens to contestants in the show... :O that would be a good idea for your level, if you could trade a crystal in exchange for getting a check point for a second to respawn dead team mates. But anyways, the way you did it was good )
- Good pacing and varied game play.

Stuff to think about:

- Theres a little bit of visible darkmatter at the begining of the level in the aztec section.
- What might be nice, is a little bit more decoration. Especially the industrial zone, felt a bit bare, no pipes or vents or anything?
- I know it's tempting, but do try not to use Mm objects, you used two in your level and they stick out quite badly. Most of the time, these objects won't fit in with your own personal style and this was no exception. Stuff you make will be cooler anyway
- It's very difficult to get a crystal, me and a friend played it and we only got one.
- The ocean zone is veerrrry tough for only getting one life.
- The ending was correct in essence, but what you COULD do to make it more like the crystal maze, is to learn a little bit of logic, then make it so the points bubbles get propelled around by bounce pads on the floor and the more crystals you have the more emitters are emitting points bubbles. And then it all stops after 10 seconds or so, that would be aces. Just having the points sit there felt a little anti-climatic.

So yeah, please F4F my Seeking the Meaning levels in my sig (don't worry, the prologue is only about 30 seconds long )

Cheers.

ok, I'll see what I can do, but the more crystals the more points you get at the end, but I'll see about making them fly about everywhere

Thanks for your input

Pretty fine level! :star::star::star: from me!

Pros:
Its fun and made me play it twice!

Cons:
Bomb walk was too large
Ocean area was way too difficult
Most crystals were hard to get.

F4F "Hazy Hills Hiking" whenever you have the chance.
