I need help with some combination logic

Archive: 6 posts

What I'm trying to do is when the player grabs 4 different objects in the correct order it opens a door, but if they pull all four of them in an incorrect order (by this i mean if the combination is 1234 and they pull 1324 or 4312 it will not work) it resets itself and makes a noise.

So basically what I need is something that can track four inputs and if they are pulled in the correct order they activate a permanent switch, and if they are not, it makes a sound and automatically resets itself.

I already have something from a WIP level that can do that, there are some problems though:

1. It works with emitters, when you pull a lever an emitter emits a dissolve block with a key on it, currently it is attached to switches with winches to hold them down after they are pulled so they can't pull it again and emit another block, but I can't do that with grab switches, Can I?

2. It also currently has a switch that checks the combination and if it's right it opens a door, but if it's wrong it makes a noise and resets it, the problem is that I need it to check the combination once you have grabbed each of the 4 objects in any order so I would need to have something to keep track of how many objects the player has grabbed.

Thanks in advance for the help

I'd go to comphermc's profile and copy his multi lock level. The system it uses was developed by RTM223, and is called the ordered input tool. By copying the level, you'll either figure out how it works, or you'll be able to copypasta solve your problem

I think RTM also has a copyable version... but you have to go through his lock room first, and that can get messy

Thanks, I'm sure it will do exactly what I want, (I'm not quite ready to implement it yet)2009-10-26 09:10:00

Hi, I just published a level with (almost) precisely what you want. Almost, because I just released something I built a long time ago. Instead of 4 it has 6 numbers to combine (can be changed though). The combination is 1 6 2 5 3 4. You can also guess the combination by looking at the mechanism (I made sure everything fits on one screen so you can see it work). The name of the level is "keylock example" by F_hydrocephalic. It's copyable and you get a prize bubble after entering the combination. Feel free to ask me if you need more help.2009-10-26 12:17:00

Yup, assuming you can work out what's going on, the ordered input tool that's being used in my level (as created by rtm223) can be extended for however long a combination you'd like.2009-10-26 12:33:00

I took a look at rtm's original thread on the ordered input tool, and it's much better than my suggestion, so forget that one. Nice work rtm.2009-10-26 14:19:00
