Pros and Cons about LBP PSP

Archive: 41 posts

My friends have been to some of those conventions where they were able to test out the upcoming LittleBigPlanet PSP, and they've noted some of the features on LBP PS3 that are not on the portable version.

Some things I remember that the PSP version can't do is:
1. There will only be two layers instead of three.
2. You can only use the grid.
3. You cannot play online with other people [which I guess was expected already].

But there are other features, such as the ability to combine emotions and have the ability to punch, spin jump, etc. as well as have even more costumes available. Regardless, you can't expect a massive game like LBP to fit into the Playstation Portable.

Is there anything else I'm missing here? What do you think about the direction this game is going? Please post as response!

I have played the game too, and even though there are only two full layers there are two half layers between each layer. That means that in LBP PSP you have eight layers to work with instead of LBP's seven. Also, you can decide if objects are physics-based or not, which will save a lot of space on the thermometer.

I can live without online multiplayer. Sure it was fun to run around with other sackpeople, but it also made the game a lot harder.

I think the game is going pretty well. You can't expect the entire PS3 game to fit on the PSP, but they did get almost everything in there and added a few things.

This game will be a masterpiece on the PSP, better than the majority of PSP games to date. I believe that Create Mode will be much better than it is on the Playstation 3 console. Even though you can only use grid mode, I can just imagine travelling on a bus or something and whipping out my Playstation Portable to create stuff that I can see out the window; LBP just seems to suit the PSP much more than the PS3.

Although it is a shame that a lot of brilliant features have been taken out, we still know that this will be a fantastic game nevertheless.

Well that makes things more interesting. This whole time I've been thinking we would only have 5 layers to work with. Sweet!2009-10-27 05:29:00

Wouldn't the half layers make 9 layers total though?

3 thin layers (back, middle, front)

2 thick layers (background, foreground)

4 half-layers (2 for each thick layer)

3+2+4=9?

Or are one of these not in (maybe front thin layer?)

I believe he meant, there are two thick layers, the front and the back. And six thin layers, two in the front, middle, and back.

2+6=8

You can see in some of the screenshots that some of the stuff in the thin layers are kinda in front of each other.

^LOL^

And that's awesome!
Hopefully this means we can still make well-made levels with scenery ^.^

Lol, I guess that makes sense.

I've got a question about the half layers, do they act as walls? If I only have 1 half layer, can the player jump on it or do they go through it?

Sorry, I meant thin layers (I just call them half layers). They are the same as in the PS3 version (so they act like walls), but there are more of them.

How easy is it to tell the thin layers apart? What I mean by that is, in create mode is it reasonably apparent to determine what layer an object is occupying when you have it selected? Does it use the same "shadowing" effect as the PS3?2009-10-28 22:30:00

Here are some images so you can judge for yourself:

You can see it very well in this image. (http://psp.ign.com/dor/objects/14286080/littlebigplanet/images/littlebigplanet-portable-20090602025713157.html?page=mediaFull)

The head and legs are slightly in front of the body.

Another example is here. (http://psp.ign.com/dor/objects/14286080/littlebigplanet/images/littlebigplanet-portable-20090602025714704.html?page=mediaFull)

The figure sitting on the finger has its leg hanging out in front of the finger. Both the finger and the figure are in different thin planes right next to each other.

Ah, ok I see it now. Thanks.

A single button to cycle through all the layers will take a little getting used to.

It won't be as bad as if you had to do that on the PS3 version.2009-10-29 22:05:00

True. I'll just have to see how it works out having 6 thin layers to choose from. It should make for some nifty level building though. 2009-10-29 22:15:00

Wow, we have gotten off-topic. All in all, I would say that LBP PSP is turning out to be a great portable version of LBP.2009-10-30 00:08:00

Had a chance to play this and there are only 3 thin layers. In the version I've seen anyway.

All I'm going to say is that whilst I think that LBP PSP is very good, the smaller screen and button limitations mean that I'd much rather play the PS3 version. It probably would be possible to create most things you can on the PS3 version with the PSP version, but it would take a lot longer and would be a lot more annoying to make.

I cant wait to get LBP PSP!!! i pre ordered it and its coming tuesday. it DOES suck tho that some features in lbpps3 arent on lbppsp, since this whole time i was under the impression that lbppsp had "everything the ps3 version has, plus more".

still, i wonder why we can only use a grid... simple things sometimes cant be made using the grid. you cant even put a bolt in the exact middle of a circle with the grid.

i wonder what sizes they'll come in, if they will have more than small, medium, and large. maybe sizes like eensy weensy, small, small-ish, medium, kinda big, large, huge, and friggin huge will do good.

I was a little disappointed in the resolution of the sackperson. In the PS3 version the sackperson looks 3D, but on the PSP, it's more of a flat cartoon.2009-11-20 16:49:00

You really think that!? The Sackboy render is really well done in my opinion. And anyways, it's the PSP, which is not nearly as powerful as the PS3.

LBP PSP looks much more cartoony, opposed to the ultra realistic, which fits the style well.

Hmmm, looking back at this thread, it's wrong. Just incase anyone reading this and doesn't have the game; there are only 2 thick layers and 3 thin ones, front back and middle. I think DarthJ464 got a bit confused as even in the screenshots he posted, there are only 3 layers. They cut the objects in a way that makes it look like more. Just a clever illusion.2009-11-28 15:29:00

Yeah, but that was well before the game was released. It sort of looked like there was more layers there judging from the short time I had with a very early version of the game and the screenshots. It was a honest mistake. Just like you said; it was a good illusion that tricked me.

I was tricked by that too, but I've since learned to live with having only five layers. 2009-11-28 17:08:00
