Hey guys

I've finished the latest chapter, and could really do with lots of playtesting before I publish proper. If you're interested in giving some feedback on any glitches, bugs, difficulty issues, anything really, just post here and I'll PM you the code for the key level that I've put up....many thanks!

Hey Jules.. played through it once about 3 hours ago (as a time reference in case of changes since). Didn't find any major issues offhand. I wanna play it a few more times before I give you any detail as well as hopefully find any problems.

...and since we are talking offhand. Very cool level for sure! Jabba was fun... XX LOL!! Great use of the searchlight that led to some great platforming challenges.

Oh.. I remember one thing.. on the first guard, his searchlight was not electrified where the others were. I was able to romp over him and hang out with him a bit as well as shamelessly took a pic that I posted.

No juddery pistons like last time! wooo hooo!!

And thanks for the key! That was a most welcome surprise today!

and i see from the uploaded pics that Jagrevi's already managed to break the level, lol.

hehe - yeah

Anyways, as far as general review:Loved it (of course) - but still some things I think could be improved.

First off a question ... what is with the area to the right of the starting zone? I went over there to explore, and made it past two checkpoints all the way to a wall. There were no point bubbles, or alternate routes. It was just a very well mapped out but seemingly irrelevant dead-end.

EDIT: NM, overlooked this ...

doh, i published the beta with the entrance point a 1/4 way into the level.

Anyways...

General Beta-Testing Feedback

Logic:

Jabba - Yes, as I uploaded an image for you of, the first time I went through, the floor wouldn't drop me into the rancor pit. Instead, I just stood there until Jabba began to levitate. Which was very funny, I must admit, but didn't let me continue on with the level.

Aesthetics:

Gamorreans - They look great! I absolutely love these guys!

Rancor - Unfortunately, the rancor looked absolutely nothing like a Rancor. It honestly felt like I was fighting a giant dinosaur of some sort instead. I don't think the flat stickering really works for a rancor, his features need more definition. I don't know whether the solution is stickering a grittier material, applying some decorations, or simply putting on some thin strips where appropriate to give detail, but as it stands, the Rancor feels like the biggest loss of immersion in the piece, and the whole level is so good it's really a shame.

Level In General - Overall though, the level looked great. Sure, there were a couple super-nit picky parts. (Jabba didn't seem quite right at first, I would have thought he'd be shinier and rounder - like made out of rubber or another different material. He seemed ... "sandy" instead. Of course, I forgave this as soon as had the chance to choke him to death. Also, Boba Fett is a very popular character, but when you first run into him, you can barely make him out because the corner he's in is so dark. It would be nice if he was a bit more visible). Those are the real nit-picks, however. Overall, the level looked great. We'd all be lucky to pull off the amount of style that a good deal of this level has.

Gameplay:

Great - That was really, really fun. I loved choking Jabba and watching his eyes spin. I love when Boba Fett started attacking. Tons of fun.

Competitive Analysis:

Given how difficult the beginning portion of the level is, it is really a shame there aren't more points available going into it. Getting through those areas unscathed is a big deal, but you don't have enough points yet to emphasize it when it comes down to final scores.

I think to give this level real serious replayability, you should definitely have more score points in the beginning, so that the actually challenging part of the level makes more of a difference when it comes to final scores.

(EDIT - Perhaps this particular issue though is mitigated when we start from this "real" starting point. If you think it is though ... add more points anyways. With the difficulty curve of this level, we should get tons of points early to balance it competitively. If you think you already have enough in the beginning, add a bit more.)

Also - the "hidden" Chewie section where you can meet Chewie before going to Han. I liked finding it, but it felt strange I wasn't awarded for doing it at all. It would be nice if when I talked to him there, it killed a "brained-dark-matter" off screen or something just for the points, some way of making finding him feel a bit more "special".

A FINAL NOTE

One last thing. Given that these levels are primarily awesome because they are parody, I was shocked to find absolutely no reference to this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIk7M5uLmIc

Not including Max Rebo is a glaring omission!!!

I'm stunned not to find him in there I tell's ya'. Stunned.

You can't find the time to make fun of what should rightfully be the most popular Star Wars character of all time?

Is that scene not good enough comic material? Is the joke not obvious.

Especially given that this is how the scene looks now ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BogbtlJs1rI

Chewie gets to make an "I'm in prison" early cameo but Max Rebo and The Max Rebo Band doesn't even make the cut?! Honestly, it feels like leaving out the Sarlacc.

Wow.... this level is fantastic! I had a huge amount of fun beginning to end, and everything worked very well for me.

A couple totally subjective thoughts:

- There was a few areas which seemed a bit hard considering the series. I PERSONALLY like those areas the way they are, but depending on the age group you're targetting you may want to slightly adjust them. For instance, the platform part where you have the plasma spinning around them. Without concentrating it may be difficult for some players to get through this part. Slightly slowing down the speed of the spinning plasma could help. Once again, though, for me they were fine.

- There were a few areas where you walk behind the walls but because of the camera angle it was a bit hard to see there was a way to walk in that direction.

- Small gripe, but on the hovering crafts above the sand - the enemies with brains... it would bring a bit more life to this part if the enemies were moving in some way - even if their heads were slightly moving.

But, small suggestions aside - I absolutely love it!

Thanks for the suggestions and comments so far guys, all very helpful. : )

I've tweaked a few things and taken them all on board.

@Jagrevi, boy you know your STAR WARS,lol. The Rancoor is really tough to get right, but I'll persevere. I've made him a bit more difficult thanks to a suggestion from Zwollie, but aesthetically i'm a bit stuck a the mo (he's made of dissolve which limits the options a tad). And initially I had plans for a whole slew of supporting characters, but had to scale that down somewhat (laugh). All your suggestions make perfect sense to me though, thanks so much, I've incorporated them where i can.

@ Ccubbage - Ha, i knew you'd pick up on that! I'll see how many peeps have difficulty issues but i know exactly what you mean....If you can remember which walls/paths were confusing PM me if you can? ....And the end bunch should now be firing a few more hazards, that hopefully will help, I might stick on some guns if i have the space...

I loved it. Was a great length too.

Didn't find any bugs, but I had a few minor issues.

- At the Rancor section, the end of it was a little anti-climactic. Having hit all the brains I then had to wait to grab the tail (which is a bit awkward) before crushing it. The way it's done is hilarious and very cute, but it's just that bloomin tail that had me 'Oh for goodness sake'-ing. Maybe a jedi jump pad up to the swing once you've hit all the brains?

- Once Jabba is down (awesome btw), I didn't see the winch appear and wandered back out to the skiffs as I figured that'd be my exit. Maybe a little clearer pathfinding or block the way we came in to stop that.

- And I say this with every new level, but I'd throw in a few more laughs wherever you can. Maybe a 'Hello Clarice....' when you're heading through the jail.

I think the real problem with the Rancor is just that it's face, which is very detailed in concept, in the level is almost a solid color.

If you can't make the head out of a different material, I think the best option would be to make thin layer details and paste them onto the face. An alternative idea, if you need a "bump", some decorations when placed in a heap at different angles around a single point (think of an asterix) form interesting circularly symmetrical bumps. (Just start spinning the decoration and "place" it again and again while spinning).

After looking at some Rancor images, the most important feature seems to be the "forehead-nostril". Once that's in place, it seems that as long as you put "bumpy detail" on the face in the proper place, it still ends up registering mentally as "Rancor".

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/10/30/rancor.jpg
http://i.ytimg.com/vi/4qaTyT9OkhM/0.jpg

The latter image here, from Spore, clearly is taking liberties with the actual forehead details. However, it has the nostril right, and the other details are "correct enough" that it's still "a Rancor".

It should also probably be pointed out that the Rancor does not have a long tail, and is closer to a human in body shape than a tyrannosaurus.

Sorry it took so long to post this! I was just too busy admiring the level. Altough I don't know the Star Wars movies, books, etc. very well, I do know this is a great level. Great job! I will hopefully play this again and update this with some more info, but don't rely on me, I might forget.

Pros:
~Great design and atomsphere
~Wonderful characters
~Extremely well thought out dialog
~I liked the harder difficulty, mostly.
~More fun gameplay ideas

Cons:
~Chewie in the cage had a small typing error, unless you meant it to be that way. He said something like "Great plan is." or something. It didn't look right.
~Some of the spotlights would detect my sackboy outside of the light, or so it seemed.
~Not quite as much joking as your previous levels.
~In my opinion, there weren't quite enough bubbles in the level, as said by a previous poster.

Other than the few things I thought could be improved, it was a great level and I can't wait to play the finished version!

There could still be a few more in the beginning part of the level, even after the newest version, but I would recommend against putting any more in latter sections of the level.

A few other things:

The part with the spinning plasma, I managed to get hit by the plasma one of the times, instead of the gas. This resulted in some green gas spinning around where there used to plasma - it was kinda funny, but didn't look quite right.

At the very beginning, if you run to the left you go into the back layer into a little alcove. This could be an opportunity to add some more bubbles?

I had the spinning gas issue as well. ...though possibly a few nights eating spicy food might cause the same effect.

Noticed quite a few improvements. Agree with CCubbage that final battle needs some extra hover motion or something. Characters moving a bit would be nice, but I was wondering if having the hovercrafts moving a bit might be nice also. ...though you can stop cursing at me now!! LOL!!

I never notice the electrified bits on the Rancor before.. was that new or did I get lucky the first few times I played?? AAAAARRGHHHH!!! It kills me all the time! Ok ok. I'll stop whining.

Really nice additions and I guess the portal must have been moved up when I played it last! LOVED ... I said LOVED the beginning bits. Incredible lighting there jules!

Awesome work... I will keep trying to see what I can break though.

Thanks all for posting your suggestions on everything, its all really helpful and makes me thankful for this forum!

I've incorporated as many of them as the thermo/my create brain can take (both are completely gone now, heh heh) , and hopefully sorted all out the hiccups that've been mentioned.

@Jagrevi - ha, you're a star for getting those pics. I've played around and tried but not really getting there, I did manage to make him look more authentic but he lost a lot of the cutes so i think I'll stick with the original more dinosauresque vibe and hope no rancoors out there take offence. ; ) I've changed some of the material to give him at least a little texture and creature eyes rather than the stickers in an attempt to make him a bit more alive. And more bubbles in the beginning. (The Rancoor got all the stick yet my Salacious Crumb looks like a complete freak. lol)

@Matt - The tail is easier to grab now and the skulls are bigger, hope that does the trick. Leia's text bubble after Jabba highlights the winch, and I've coloured the sponge to help there also. I would emit a passage blocker but the thermo has packed up on me, so this is just an more efficient way of solving that one with any luck. I've hopefully added a few more jokes, but yeh, there's ALWAYS room for more. ; )

@comphy - once again you wriggle out, well spotted! Thanks for the PM feedback, you're a true level breaker, heh heh. The gas plasmas are a real pain, its a plasma ball glued inside a cylinder of gas, its rare but if you happen to touch one of those random pulsating edges of the plasma instead of the gas then pish. I keep making the plasmas smaller and smaller in an effort to avoid this so I've reduced them further still.

@piggy - typo fixed, and more laughs (i hope) and bubbles now. The rogue spotlights, i've done the sensors as best i can i think, some of them have to be able to kill you when you're swinging/jumping in either direction and that can prove tricky so I've erred on the side of a bigger sensor area than smaller.

@jww (& Ccubbage) - I've put in a little motion on the some of the end guys to make it more alive. jww, I made the Rancoor harder after some feedback from Zwollie, but i may have gone too far with that. Theres now just a single electrofied spike, and it's generally easier to get up to the door level. <over & out>

phew. ; )

@Littlesackboy, i'll PM you a keycode, I'm probably publishing today anyway, but the beta will there be there for a lil while.

Cheers all!!!

... I guess just putting a little red bow on the "ugly" one isn't cute enough? oh well.

Would it be possible to put an invisible barrier just around the plasma core and still have it function adequately?

Just a thought. If not, I think it's a rather small issue in reality, comparable to being able to break a decorative background piece.

I'm probably publishing today anyway

Really? I'll have to get online today and give it a play if we're less than 24 hours away from final version.

If Max Rebo doesn't make the cut (again - travesty) ... would it be possible for him to at least make it onto the level "icon"? I think he deserves at least that much.

Ha. : )

I don't reckon the plasmas would work that way, unless emitters got involved (which i avoid wherever possible). As long as the gas kills you before you touch the plasma it should be no problem.

YOU'RE OBSESSED!!!! ; ) If i actually had the thermo for him i wouldn't be able to say no at this point.

Oh.. I did remember one thing that not sure anyone touched on. At the hovercraft scene. Before remembering to bounce up to get the paint gun, I was able to get to the other hovercraft to the upper right with the two baddies... I think by jumping off the top of Hans? Although I couldn't do a darn thing to them, I wasn't punished for it by getting shot.

Not a huge issue, but thought I would pass on the info.

Later!

Yeah, I did that same thing at the hovercraft spot. But I don't think it's too bad, all you have to do is move the hovercraft on the right up a little bit and you'll be fine.
