Law in England

Archive: 7 posts

Anybody know about the laws on owning/driving a boat in England? From what I've heard there's no need for a licence but I can't find anything that clearly states what laws on boats, or any laws, there are.2009-10-23 16:22:00

Here's what I could find.

Hope that helps.

We own a speedboat, here's what I know:

Anyone can drive it (law will change soon), even me, and I'm 14. The same applies for smaller boats, like Ribs. However, I strongly recommend a course in powerboat/rib driving, and there's probably/definitely no chance of being rented one without this.

Also, interesting note - you can drink and drive boats, there is no law against it. There soon will be, but, at the moment, you can drink as much as you want.

What about...say...if you built a boat?
Also dawesbr, when I was posting this I thought I bet dawesbr knows. I have no idea why.

Haha, weird coincidence!

Also, you're saying you built an engine powered boat? (I assume engine powered because you said "Driving" not "Sailing"). You'd better make sure it will NOT sink, not as a joke, because any port authorities will most like want your head on a platter if you create a shipwreck in their port

You should be legally fine to drive that baby around, but it depends where. If you have, say, a beach house, and are just launching it there, or something like that, fine, but I'm not sure how any harbour will respond

Well it's not built yet. If I can't drive it then it would have been a rather time consuming art piece for the garden! But the idea is to get an engine on it. Just hope I can work it into being my physics coursework this year otherwise I'm on my own a bit. Either way I'm going to document it all so I'll keep you guys posted.2009-10-24 01:40:00

Cool, cool, is it going to be a flat bottomed one?

Also, yeah, it should be fine. You can take a gamble and just go out driving it, if you're in a rural enough area with little boat traffic, but if you're in a harbour or built up area, you could gamble and ask the authorities there.
