Using two controllers in create mode, tips

Archive: 4 posts

I figure a lot of creators might not know this (considering many probably don't own two controllers to begin with!) but there are some tricks you can do with two controllers in create mode which you couldn't do with only one.

For the purposes of these tips, we assume that the primary controller is in "hover" mode.

Precision editing
When zoomed in all the way with the primary controller it's sometimes hard to place objects (that have a "snap to" behavior) and decorations precisely. When you move your popit cursor, the viewpoint moves along with it.

If you use a secondary controller to do the editing instead, the viewpoint remains fixed, allowing you to place the object exactly where you want it without having the viewing angle suddenly change. This also allows you to change the zoom, angle and position of the viewpoint on the primary controller even if the secondary controller has an object selected.

Zoomed-out playtesting
Normally when creating things you'll test them on the spot in create mode to make sure everything works as it should. However if you need to be on the ground to test something, but want to see how other offscreen parts (such as logic) are behaving, you can't zoom out to see them.

If you use a secondary controller to be on the ground instead, once again the viewpoint remains fixed. You can set the viewpoint to your liking using the primary controller and playtest using the secondary controller.

Avoid accidental rewinds
I've often accidentally hit the play/rewind/forward buttons while editing, and it's usually a hassle to make sure everything in the level is back the way it's supposed to be and that nothing broke.

The secondary controller does not have access to the play/rewind/forward functions, so there's no risk of accidentally hitting them while in the middle of editing. This has the unfortunate side-effect that if you want to play/rewind/forward you have to remember to do it on the primary controller, which sometimes gets a little confusing.

Well, I hope these tips help some of you out there have an easier time in create mode. If you know any other good ways to use two controllers in create mode feel free to share them with us.

Actually, I do these things often when Creating with a friend of mine. I never really thought about doing them by myself, but I realize we tend to use these techniques, mainly the first two. Can't say they aren't useful!2009-10-25 02:54:00

Hmmm... I will have to try that. I have learned some other tricks to deal with some of these issues, but in some instances this could be easier!

Thanks for sharing!
