Leonardo da Stickerist ~ Art Contest ~ Round III (OVER)

Archive: 47 posts

Stickers can really change a level, they can make it look much more realistic, or give it a cartoonish feel. Take AntonioLadrillo for example, he uses stickers on almost all his levels, and it gives them a unique style that really tells you he made it.

So, to show what awesomeness can be made with stickers, I decided to make this contest. Create art with the many stickers at your disposal, and try to bring out interesting and unique art.

Without further ado, I present to you... Leonardo da Stickerist!

Rules:

1. No decorations! Only stickers!
2. The only tools you can is the sticker placer, and the selector so you can delete unwanted stickers.
3. The picture must be on a piece of cardboard. You can choose whatever size it is, but it has to be a rectangular piece of cardboard, and you cannot change its shape!
4. Stay to theme! Every round will have a theme, so stick to it, and don't make something completely off-theme!
5. Only two entries per round, and you can only win once a round. Also, if you win a round, you cannot win the next round, but you can still participate just for fun.
6. Judges can enter the contest, but they cannot win.
7. Post a picture in this thread when you are done!
8. No custom stickers, just the ones MM gave you.
9. Name your file right. I shall post what the file should be called, which will make posting the pictures on this post much easier, and quicker. (Most of the time it will be: lds(Theme name)(Your exact forum name) )

Judges:

1. Cog
2. dajdaj03
3. goldenclaw13

Prizes:

1st: 400xp
2nd: 250xp
3rd: 150xp

Round III Theme:

The Specific Sticker Special!

This round isn't a theme, but a chosen set of stickers that you must smartly use to create something original! You only get 10 stickers this round. If your picture has something that wasn't on the list in it, it will not be used, so make sure it's allowed!

Here is a picture of the stickers you can use;

http://i796.photobucket.com/albums/yy247/CogSpartan/ldstickers.png

The sticker list is:

Lovely Planet
Explosion
Black Circle
Jewel Crown Motif
Blue Graph Paper
Sackboy Neutral
Red Square
Red Flame Graphic
Dirt Smear
Jigsaw Piece

Note: The background of the picture MUST (MUST!!!!) be the 'Blue Graph Paper'! You can see in the above picture that the background is that. This way, each picture will have a sort of same theme, making it look better.

Also, when posting your picture, please name the file: ldsSSS(Your exact forum name)

For example, mine would look like:

ldsSSSCog

Coolies!

So, just to clarify:
Can we use as many duplicates of those ten stickers as we want?
Can we NOT use some of them, or must we use ALL of them?
Does the graph paper background have to be to the scale you've used or can we choose the scale? (eg. One big sticker with larger squares vs many smaller stickers making many small squares)

Wow. This is a tricky one. I have zero ideas whatsoever, I'll have to go in and screw around with the stickers to see if I could make anything out of it. It's always worthwhile to to play with limitations though, it forces creativity.2009-10-23 09:40:00

Really good questions there
Each of those stickers can be used as many times as you want (or it would be too limited...)

Must all those 10 stickers be used? I think so but we haven't discuss about that.
Let COG confirm, he's the boss (Same for the graph paper background scale...)

That's what Cog wanted for this round, something challenging and original!
I really want to see what you can do with this guys!

Almost right, but you don't have to use them all. If you really wanted you could only use one!

ok so once again i have for you guys two versions of basically the same image. I took a lot of print classes in college and was spoiled by the ability to change an image as many times as I liked. . .such as changing colors. . or adding and subtracting different elements. My original image turned out not to be a valid entry as it did not use the blue graph paper background, the pheonix in that image is porportioned differently and if you'd like to see it; its in my albums. And no, the irony of remaking a phoenix image from scratch multiple times was not lost on me.

There is something in the rules that I think you might want to specify.

3. The picture must be on a piece of cardboard. You can choose whatever size it is, but it has to be cardboard, and nothing else!

In this rule, you did not mention anything about changing the shape of the cardboard. I imagine that you want the cardboard to be a rectangle, so I think you should mention that in there. Otherwise, members could be free to change the shape of the cardboard, thus using another aspect to create the picture other that just stickers.

Alright, I've gone for a more abstract look here. I used all of the stickers except for the Black Circle and Dirt Smear. They are basically the same, but I removed the jigsaw puzzle pattern away from the second one, so that I could make what I was trying to show a bit more clearer. Hopefully it will be seen that it's supposed to be a Sackboy head made from the different available stickers. Try to pay attention to the outline on the inside of the Red Flame Graphics and Red Squares, and not the overall outline that looks like a mane. :/

Some entries may be at a dissadvantage i would like to point out because the explosion sticker is from the MGS DLC and not everyone will have that.2009-10-26 09:50:00

nope, I believe robotiod is right, its a prize from one of the mgs levels. I remember because I didn't have it for the longest time. . . i'd see it around and look for it in my own stickers. . . and only got it later after doing a more thourough sweep of the mgs levels. There are still a few things I've yet to collect from that pack. . .2009-10-27 02:00:00

Okay, since the cardboard shape rule has been added, I have another question -

Does that whole piece of cardboard have to be included in the image? Can I zoom in and take a pic of part of the design as my entry (as long as the background is visible, obviously)?

Seems like the red flame sticker is very succesfull...

As long as your creation fits more or less the rectangular picture frame, it's ok!
And no matter if the piece of cardboard and the background shows in the image...

What is not allowed is making and showing your art work on a square or a circle shapes for example...

Yea...expect ive already beaten the other tutorials. I skipped an early one just so I could access the tool. Then I follow the tutorial list later by pressing said button. So that theory wont work for me Im afraid.

Okay, I've been stuffing around for long enough... it's not going to get any more finished than this. It's called 'The Greedy Geisha'. I hope I named the file correctly for you Cog. I was going to attempt a second entry but I'm flat chat with real life at the moment. I do have a picture proving that I've placed red squares into the white boxes of the grid, so if you need me to post that, let me know, okay? Cheers!

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=718&pictureid=8183

BTW, I lowered her neckline a little, hoping that might win me some points with the male judges. JUST KIDDING!!

Hey Babydoll, once again great one!
Very detailled, and very smart how you used the tiny explosion stickers!
And the geisha neckline is...wow

Now, there's maybe a little problem here :
The blue graph paper background is not visible, and here are the rules :

The background of the picture MUST (MUST!!!!) be the 'Blue Graph Paper'! You can see in the above picture that the background is that. This way, each picture will have a sort of same theme, making it look better.

Sorry...
Do you think you could remove the red squares without messing up everything?

So, the whole of the graph paper must be visible? The lines between the red are the blue lines of the grid, which technically means it's visible. I'll post the other pic to show you and see if it makes any difference, ok?

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=718&pictureid=8184

However, if I need to remove some of the squares, I can do. Just let me know.

Cog set this blue paper graph rule so that all the entries have a common background canvas,
and look like being part of the same theme.

Even if the blue line still show in you entry,
the background looks very different from the other creators entries, so it can't be judge on the same basis...

The blue paper graph must be visible all around your creation,
so like in your second picture, maybe you should "zoom out" a little and remove a little more red on the right...

Anyway if it's easy to remove all the red squares, you better do it I think,
and don't worry, your geisha will still look awesome

You can wait for Cog to confirm this, if you prefer

EDIT :
I just thought that maybe there was a little misunderstanding on my previous anwser about the piece of cardboard

As long as your creation fits more or less the rectangular picture frame, it's ok!
And no matter if the piece of cardboard and the background shows in the image...
Here's I was talking about the level background behind the carboard, not the artwork (blue paper graph) background...
Sorry if it was confusing

Aw, maaaaan! I thought the whole purpose was to be as creative as you could be with what you were given?... Well, what if I removed just HALF of the red squares. All it says in the rules is that the background MUST be the graph paper, which it is. It doesn't say you need to see it all around the image, or that knocks out Piggabling's first entry. You'd still see plenty of it that way. I'll see what Cog has to say about half remaining. Losing all the red kills the mood. I'll do it if I have to, though.
Thanks : )

Actually, I'm fine with the red over top of it, but thanks anyway Daj!

I just wanted a theme but you made a nice background so I don't want to ruin it. At least it's there!

OK BOSS!!!! As you want

but i'm wondering what is the point to say that it must be done with a certain background if it's not visible.... ?
