What is the best movie?

Archive: 65 posts

Okay fellow forum folk, I want to watch an AWESOME movie. I mean a movie that will change my opinion about what a good movie is.
So I thought I would get your opinion. So...

What is the greatest movie you have ever seen?

Ouch... oh lordy. That's too hard to handle.

I don't know if I can give you the greatest movie I've ever seen. I've seen a lot of movies, but I couldn't imagine how I'd figure out which was the greatest. Instead I can give you a couple of my favorites.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

and

Brazil

If you haven't seen either of these, you are in for a treat.
If you end up hating them, that's all just a sign that movies are fiercely personal things. We all share them, but some become our own private little favorite things, like memories and experiences and feelings stored away in our brains.

But those are two of my STRONGEST recommendations.

EDIT: Is there anything in particular you're looking for? Something experimental unlike anything you've ever seen, or something more traditional, but just amazingly well-made?

Well, I don't care genre. I like being surprised by something I didn't think I would like. I'm not a fan of movies like the Notebook. I really enjoyed The Fountain and I never heard of it until these forums. So I am open to any suggestions. I haven't really heard anyone say Eternal Mind was any good so I passed on it but I will check that one out. What's Brazil?2009-10-23 12:22:00

I recommend you watch "The Shawshank Redemption." It's on my top list of movies-you-must-see-before-you-die. Enjoy!

(oh, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was pretty cool too.)

This.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of my go-to movies. Absolutely great. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is certainly a fantastic movie, but it isn't for everyone, but it'll definitely alter your perception of reality.

I'd be surprised if he hasn't seen Shawshank! In my experience that movie has been ubiquitous. It's been nearly impossible to miss. If I didn't see it when it first came out, I would have caught one of its 21,000 tv viewings in the interim.
but wow, talk about a movie that stands the test of time. this is a movie that didn't exactly break records at the box office, but it's done better on tv and home video than nearly anything else of its generation. It's an absolute classic.

I should mention that I also hate The Notebook. I mean for me it wasn't a matter of "meh, I don't care for this" - I HATED it with a burning passion! I saw it because of Ryan Gosling, who was AMAZING in Half Nelson. But anyway, I hate The Notebook, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind happens to be my all-time favorite movie. So that should be a decent nudge to get you in there!

Brazil's one of my favorite movies. I love the fact that you're probably imagining something TOTALLY different than what it is based on the title. Here are a couple of posters to pique your interest. But i'll say no more.

I'm afraid I'd have to say Donnie Darko. I've seen many great movies but nothing really compared to Donnie Darko. Now I know people will say that it wasn't a good movie but I am SURE that they did not understand.

I have developed a perfect theory as to what its about and how the movie is categorized and such, so if you didn't understand, PLEASE ASK ME AND YOU WILL BE AMAZED.

True mind blasting movie. By the way... DO NOT WATCH S.DARKO IT IS REALLY BAD.

I don't know what I would consider as the best movie ever but I just watched 'Tenacious_D in The Pick of Destiny' all the way through for the first time and it was pretty good...

My mum has bought me a film called 'Minis' that came out this year. I have never heard of it before, but my mum thinks it will be funny because there are short people (Really short) playing basketball. It may be the greatest film of all time. We shall see. XD

Also, if you don't mind 18s, there is a film called 'In Bruge' with lots of really bad swearing. Me and my dad thought it was funny, but not only because they swore non-stop. I wouldn't say it is the best. Not at all. But if you want a surprise then this is it.

It's basically a zombie flick. Scientist extracted the gene for rage and it turns out that it can be passed on like aids, biting people Um anyway, 28 Days Later was one of my favorites, 28 Weeks Later really surprised me, I thought it would suck, turned out pretty good. By the way, 28 days, not a Zombie flick...would've been worth watching with Romero directing though

I can't watch any movies until Monday but I think the vote is Eternal Sunshine so far. (the notebook nudge lol)

Keep on with the suggestions though

You will not be disappointed!

A couple more suggestions anyway - don't get me wrong, see Eternal Sunshine for SURE - but if you haven't seen these, they're very worthwhile:

There Will Be Blood, one of the coolest monster movies ever made.

For All Mankind, if you're interested in the Apollo program. It's an absolutely magical documentary on Apollo. It brought me to tears.

Ha - Not to worry, we are talking about the same movie. Opened the same weekend as Cloverfield, but one was a far superior monster flick. I wasn't sure what to expect with There Will Be Blood, but I felt when all was said and done that I had kind of just watched a monster movie. I felt like I had seen some kind of re-imagining of Dracula. It turns out I wasn't the only one!

from Variety (http://www.variety.com/blog/1390000339/post/960015096.html%22):

"However, it took Ain't It Cool News' Harry Knowles to point out during the Q&A that Plainview was the "best monster" he had seen all week. Anderson responded that Dracula was in his thoughts as he was writing the screenplay. "There Will Be Blood" indeed."

Okay, I totally agree that Saw was one of the best movies, Horror or not. I mean the end took me by complete surprise. I have watched horror movies since I was in diapers so I can usually tell you how every movie is going to end and whats going to happen (my girlfriend hates it), I always guess the killer, but when homeboy got up out of the pool of blood I got chills. Every Saw movie I have seen since, however, has been horrible. They use the formula: more people+more gore=money. Unfortunately they are right.
I don't mean to critique your favorites but White Noise? I was mad at my television after watching that. I had to take a break to finish it. Maybe I had my expectations up for Micheal Keaton.
I really like the Man Hunter movies, or rather The Silence of the Lambs movies. Plus it had Edward Norton in Red Dragon, and I think he was the only one who could save Hulk.

Not keen on the SAW movies but SAW the Ride was a blast.

Anyway, my favourite movie probably is the Green Mile. No idea why, I just love all films that are sad. This is because: if a movie can make you feel sadness then it has to be pretty good, right?

Just watch it. It's awesome.

You just read my mind! The Godfather - best trilogy EVER. And rarely has a film like Shawshank Redemption brought on such deep reflection from me. Very hard to come by. Hmmm, and Scarface. What can you say about Scarface other than, "Say hello to my little friend!"

I watched the watchmen today.

(For some reason it kept asking me who would watch them and I told them that I was. They did not listen. )

It is pretty good. The blue man is pretty hot...

A-wah-erm... I mean... He is pretty hot when he walks on the surface of the sun. Thats what he told us... Yeah.

But seriously, it is an ok film. A guys arms get grinded off because a short man told him to do it. Lots of death. Some of it is funny.

He thought it was alright brought too long. And we both agreed, there was waayyy too much dongus in that movie. I saw the DVD version and there wasn't nearly as much and the movie was still as good. That much pepe they could atleast have some hooha?

Yes!! Any day I help bring Eternal Sunshine into anyone's life is a good day. It is my #1 personal favorite movie.

Brazil is a very different experience. Brazil is chaotic, insane, wild, manic, absolutely PACKED with visual information - it can be a bit overload especially the first time. It is STRANGE and absolutely unique. Something you may not totally get the first time through, but you might find yourself wanting to return to it sometime down the road, and after letting it stew for a while, you might find yourself really fully appreciating it.

I saw eternal sunshine once when i was a kid and hated it, i had no idea what was going on and just thought it seemed a bit depressing.

I caught the last half an hour of it on tv though not long ago and i thought it was amazing. Not knowing entirely what was going on just made me more interested to find out!
I really want to watch it from the beginning again, i think i might have the dvd somewhere.

Tough question.... too many great films to list. The first few that come to mind that I would recommend would be La Femme Nikkita (the original that that horrible pile of dung "Point Of No Return" was based on), and you should also check out Requiem For A Dream. lol I'd like to recommend two other movies that you maybe have seen but still blow me away.

Alice in Wonderland (yes the disney film. I know it seems childish but the story is so dark and frantic that it just can't go without a recommendation! You might think it's not that good but I guess it's all about opinions )

And, of course, Donnie Darko lol. This deserves to be recommended at least twice in one thread lol. If you happen to watch it, I'd be glad to give you my theory of how the movie works and flows. It is only my theory so it may not be valid but it sure is complex and mind-blowing!

Yeah.

Oh and I managed to watch a bit of Brazil the other day! It jsut so happened to be on tv so i took a stab at it. I'd like to say I understood it for the most part but i only got up to a part where the main character battles a demon thingy in a dream realm with little ugly baby like munchkins? Yep. When I finish it I'll give in my two cents!

I would absolutely love to hear some theories on Donnie Darko. I have seen it a bunch of times, but I was younger and didn't think it was that great. Normally understanding something makes it better to me.
Btw, almost all the older Disney movies are on my favorites shelf (or would be if I still had a shelves of movies).

EDIT: I just got my movie player to work, I'm starting on Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, then Brazil. I let you guys know the verdict.

UPDATE: Eternal Sunshine verdict; I'm not really big on the awkward silence type movies. It was a good movie, I liked it, not on my top ten but maybe eleven. I'm not sure if that means I have bad taste in movies. Also, it made me feel pity for Carrey, which I'm not used to, Kudos. There were moments when I thought "Come on, really?" Like Elijah Wood's character. I'm not sure how to elaborate on that. I wish we had that kind of technology though. I have some memories that just won't go away. I kind of have this built in though because I have frontal lobe damage, so forgetting isn't hard, just difficult. I'd say 7 out of 10.

On to Brazil...maybe. I have to sleep sometime. So far Brazil is brilliant, I have to watch the rest tomorrow.

Picking up Fight Club on Blu-ray November 10. One of the only films I could watch time and time again.

Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God **** it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very ****** off. -- Tyler Durden

Agreed, Fight Club really banged on all cylinders. There was a period where kids my age were going out creating their own fight clubs and worshipping that movie - during this period I despised it. I hated the movie, the book, and the kids. I had to remember in the back of my mind that it actually was a really well-made movie.

the really funny thing about Tyler Durden's quote that you listed - it's all true today, except that in reality, the 20-and-30-somethings who are disenfranchised for those exact reasons turned into hipsters, not anarchists.

Which, somehow, makes the whole thing even MORE depressing...

Tough question. It depends what you are in the mood for. I like movies I can watch over and over again and still laugh as hard as I did the first time I saw it.

The Princess Bride
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Kung Pow (wee-o-wee-o-wee)

I love the Princess Bride, and the rest. And oh holy mother of pearl how I love Fight Club. I had to practically sneak it out of my ex girlfriends house to keep her from stealing it from me. I think everyone loved that movie, just awesome.

With all the great movies ever made, this should be an impossible choice to make...but actually it's not. I pick Mullholland Drive, no contest!2009-11-14 12:13:00

In my top 5 too.

I will add "Requiem for a dream". A very addictive movie...

I saw this thread here for awhile and I thought to myself, "I don't really know...there's so many movies that I enjoy."

But then last night, I watched Sex, Lies, and Videotape again and it was just as good as I remember. Soderbergh has written some the most honest dialog in that final scene between Ann and Graham.

I love how Ann really makes Graham see that his new "transformation" is really just an affirmation of how trapped he was by the memory of his former girlfriend. I also love how Graham was able to make Ann feel comfortable with her sexuality.

The best part to me is that despite the "titillating" title, there is very little sex in the film and the sex that is in it is all off screen.

I don't consider myself nuts for the romance genre. I'm mostly a sci-fi fan, but this is my favorite film.

I am trying to watch all these movies and in between technical difficulties, work, and my girlfriend's need for my attention, I don't think I'm ever going to get them watched. I hope she gets to bed early so I can watch Mullholand and finish up Brazil.2009-11-17 05:13:00

I can confirm that watching Brazil for the first time is confusing. But I can also say that I have absolutely no reason to watch it again.2009-11-17 22:07:00

Alright, I'm back with another movie. Just watched it yesterday and thought it was absolutely BRILLIANT. I'm talking about Requiem for a Dream. It's probably my all time favorite movie now D:2009-11-22 13:27:00

I can't agree more

Take a look to Pi and The Fountain, both directed by the same Daren Aronofsky.
Some very brilliant movies!
