AV Receivers / Multichannel Amps

Archive: 9 posts

Does anyone know much about home cinema audio?

I need to buy a new amp so I've been looking around and two products have caught my eye (The prices being the recommended vs the price I can actually find them for):

Yamaha RX-V1900 (http://www.yamaha-uk.com/av_amps_receivers/index.cfm?product_id=223) (?800)

Denon AVR-2310 (http://www.denon.co.uk/site/frames_main.php?main=prod&ver=&MID=3&sub=1&action=detail&Pid=413) (?700)

I'm probably going to give them a listen on saturday, but was wondering if any one has any input, or suggestions for alternative products?

I've been a fan of Denon equipment for a long time, but as with everything it depends on your budget.

I'm currently looking at a NAD T765 (http://nadelectronics.com/products/av-receivers/T765-A/V-Surround-Sound-Receiver). It's a bit more expensive than the examples you give - the cheapest I can find is around ?1,200, but the sound is superb - you'll not get much better for a medium/large living room.

I like the look of the modular design on that NAD amp TBH but 1200 is just more than I can justify, even with my flexible attitude to budgeting (heavily influenced by my "I wanna!!!" attitude ).

The denon did just win What Hifi's award for the sub ?1000 category, which is normally a good indicator. I don't really know where the yamaha fits in that because technically it's worth a grand lol.

I agree, it's a big wedge of cash, but rtm, it's the most fun you'll ever have with tinnitus!

Haha. I'll more likely be looking at that kinda price range in around 5 years. The cost of living alone and the credit crunch denying me my big pay rise *shakes fist at the economy* mean I have to be at least vaguely practical

You thinking of treating yourself then?

I'm not sure really - I have an older NAD model at the mo, and it's maybe 6 years old. It's a decent amp, but not much in the way of HDMI.

I may get a few hundred quid for it if I part-ex. Trouble is, like you say, the current climate makes me a bit timid about making purchases like this, but when I heard it, I nearly bought it there and then.

So far I've resisted, until they bring out the new models next year - so either the prices will come down, or the new model at about ?3,000 will be bought.

I use an Onkyo, very good sound and features. You can get a THX certified one for about that price range. Give them a listen, I'd recommend them.2009-10-24 14:23:00

I went for the Denon in the end. It's currently sitting at home playing through some music on repeat to give it a good run in while I'm at work (I bet my neighbours love me).

In all honesty I'm not convinced it's quite as good as my old amp, but I haven't been able to listen to that in 4 months *shakes fist at incompetant repair people* and to actually beat the old one I'd really need to be spending well over a grand and I just can't justify that right now Still, I'm happy, it beats the crap outta my TV speakers

You tease me with your "amp"le complaints.

I live in a human filing cabinet in an urban environment with paper-thin walls. I can barely play rock band without getting complaints from neighborhing apartments on all sides, and I plasti-dipped my drumsticks and stuck the drums on layers of foam padding and blankets, with the kick pedal on a memory foam pillow!
Even owning a sub-woofer in this place is a laughable enterprise.

For God's sake!
I plasti-dipped my sticks!!
